Several demographic and environmental factors may play an important role in determining the risk of developing adult-onset isolated dystonia (AOID) and/or modifying its course. However, epidemiologic studies have provided to date only partial insight on the disease mechanisms that are actively influenced by these factors. The age-related increase in female predominance in both patients diagnosed with AOID and subjects carrying its putative mediational phenotype suggests sexual dimorphism that has been demonstrated for mechanisms related to blepharospasm and cervical dystonia.

In Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), people with shared lived experiences (co-researchers) identify priority needs and work collaboratively to co-design an action-oriented research advocacy project. For this to occur, academic researchers must build mutually respectful partnerships with co-researchers by establishing trust. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, our objective was to virtually assemble a group of co-researchers (people with diverse but relevant experiences of homelessness and diabetes) and academic researchers who engaged in the CBPR process to identify a project that would address the difficulties of diabetes management while experiencing homelessness.

Purpose: The BETTER WISE (Building on Existing Tools to Improve Chronic Disease Prevention and Screening in Primary Care for Wellness of Cancer Survivors and Patients) intervention is an evidence-based approach to prevention and screening for cancers and chronic diseases in primary care that also includes comprehensive follow-up for breast, prostate and colorectal cancer survivors. We describe the process of harmonizing cancer survivorship guidelines to create a BETTER WISE cancer surveillance algorithm and describe both the quantitative and qualitative findings for BETTER WISE participants who were breast, prostate or colorectal cancer survivors. We describe the results in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Garcia effect is a unique form of conditioned taste aversion which requires that a novel food stimulus be followed sometime later by a sickness state associated with the novel food stimulus. The long-lasting associative memory resulting from the Garcia effect ensures that organisms avoid toxic foods in their environment. Considering its ecological relevance, we sought to investigate whether a brief encounter (5 min) with a novel, appetitive food stimulus can cause a persisting long-term memory (LTM) to form that would in turn block the Garcia effect in Lymnaea stagnalis.

Proprioceptive impairments occur in ~50% of stroke survivors, with 20-40% still impaired six months post-stroke. Early identification of those likely to have persistent impairments is key to personalizing rehabilitation strategies and reducing long-term proprioceptive impairments. In this study, clinical, neuroimaging and robotic measures were used to predict proprioceptive impairments at six months post-stroke on a robotic assessment of proprioception.

Mitogenic growth factors are major cost drivers in serum-free media, contributing up to 95% of the total cost. Here, we present a streamlined workflow detailing cloning, expression testing, protein purification, and bioactivity screening that allows for low-cost production of bioactive growth factors including basic fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor β1. This generalized procedure can be used for multiple families of growth factors with minor modification, and the outputs are bioactive and suitable for cell culture applications.

Quantum emitters in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have generated significant interest due to observations of ultra-bright emission made at room temperature. The expectation that solid-state emitters exhibit broad zero-phonon lines at elevated temperatures has been put in question by recent observations of Fourier transform (FT) limited photons emitted from h-BN flakes at room temperature. All decoupled emitters produce photons that are directed in-plane, suggesting that the dipoles are perpendicular to the h-BN plane.

A seamless nanowire network (NWN) refers to a structure composed of nanowires that lack interwire contact junctions, resulting in a continuous and uninterrupted network arrangement. This seamless nature leads to unique properties, including high conductivity and surface area-to-volume ratios, which make it a promising candidate for a vast application range in nanotechnology.
