December 2023

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal, 3200 Rue Sicotte, Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec J2S 2M2 (Watanabe, Nichols, Pang); Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary, 3280 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4Z6 (Pang).

General anesthesia of a 2-year-old castrated male alpaca undergoing mandibular tooth extraction was successfully managed a mandibular nerve block with bupivacaine, using nerve stimulation to confirm correct needle placement. The local block was effective, with no cardiovascular or respiratory responses to surgical stimulation observed. Key clinical message: Use of a locoregional technique in dentistry confers anesthetic stability, blocks nociceptive responses to surgery, and promotes a smooth recovery and comfortable postoperative period.

Electronic address:

The endocannabinoid (eCB) system plays an important role in regulating the stress response, including glucocorticoid release and the generation of avoidance behaviour. Its two major ligands, 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide; AEA), are dynamically influenced by psychological stress to gate the generation of the stress response and facilitate recovery upon stress termination. Many biological systems exhibit circadian "daily" rhythms, including glucocorticoids and endocannabinoids, and the behavioural and endocrine impact of stress is modulated by the time of day.

The emergence of the Canadian Delmarva (DMV)/1639 infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) type strains was associated with egg production disorders in Eastern Canadian layer operations. While developing vaccines for novel IBV variants is not typically a reasonable approach, the consideration of an autogenous vaccine becomes more appealing, particularly when the new variant presents significant economic challenges. The current study aimed to compare the efficacies of two vaccination programs that included heterologous live priming by Massachusetts (Mass) and Connecticut (Conn) type vaccines followed by either a commercial inactivated Mass type vaccine or a locally prepared autogenous inactivated DMV/1639 type vaccine against DMV/1639 IBV challenge.

By combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with electroencephalography, human cortical circuits can be directly interrogated. The resulting electrical trace contains TMS-evoked potential (TEP) components, and it is not known whether the amplitudes of these components are stimulus intensity dependent. We examined this in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in nineteen healthy adult participants and extracted TEP amplitudes for the N40, P60, N120, and P200 components at 110%, 120%, and 130% of resting motor threshold (RMT).

High-Efficiency Enrichment by Saturating Nanoliters of Protein Affinity Media.

Anal Chem

October 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Calgary, 3330 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N 4N1.

Article Synopsis
  • Affinity-purification mass spectrometry (AP-MS) is a technique used to identify protein-protein interactions by pulling down specific proteins from cell lysates using a solid-phase support with a high-specificity ligand.
  • Traditional methods often lead to a recovery of nonspecific binders due to an excess of beads used in dilute solutions, but modern microbead technology changes this dynamic.
  • The authors introduce a new fluidic platform that enhances PPI detection efficiency by processing tiny amounts of magnetic particles, demonstrating its effectiveness with different AP-MS experiments, including those targeting specific proteins in HeLa cells and DNA repair mechanisms.
