This study evaluates different machine learning algorithms and compares their predictive performance with the conventional Cox proportional hazards (PH) model to predict hypertension incidence using survival data. Delays beyond recommended wait times, especially for specialist services, are associated with adverse health outcomes. The Alberta Surgical Initiative aims to improve the referral wait time-the time between a referral is received at the central intake to the time a specialist sees the patient. Using the discrete event simulation modelling approach, we evaluated and compared the impact of four referral distribution policies in a central intake system on three system performance measures (number of consultations, referral wait time and surgeon utilization).

Proprioceptive deficits are common following stroke, yet the white matter involved in proprioception is poorly understood. Evidence suggests that multiple cortical regions are involved in proprioception, each connected by major white matter tracts, namely: Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (branches I, II and III), Arcuate Fasciculus and Middle Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLF I, SLF II, SLF III, AF and MdLF respectively). However, direct evidence on the involvement of these tracts in proprioception is lacking.

Background: Accurate identification of pathologic complete response (pCR) from population-based electronic narrative data in a timely and cost-efficient manner is critical. This study aimed to derive and validate a set of natural language processing (NLP)-based machine-learning algorithms to capture pCR from surgical pathology reports of breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all invasive breast cancer patients who underwent NAC and subsequent curative-intent surgery during their admission at all four tertiary acute care hospitals in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2017.

Personalized prediction of incident hospitalization for cardiovascular disease in patients with hypertension using machine learning.

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of four machine learning approaches for personalized prediction of incident hospitalization for cardiovascular disease among newly diagnosed hypertensive patients.

Methods: Using province-wide linked administrative health data in Alberta, we analyzed a cohort of 259,873 newly-diagnosed hypertensive patients from 2009 to 2015 who collectively had 11,863 incident hospitalizations for heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Austrian conscription medical examination. We included 1 205 112 conscripts (18-<20 years) who were born between 1951 and 2002 and 853 645 conscripts (17-<19 years) who were born between 1961 and 2002.

Workplace-based learning provides medical students exposure to interprofessional competencies through repeated exposures and active participation in interprofessional learning activities. Using Situated Learning Theory as our theoretical lens, we explored with medical students how interacting with existing interprofessional teams contributes to development of an expanded health care professional identity. An embedded mixed methods study using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires to assess readiness for interprofessional learning was conducted with 14 medical students completing an elective at an interprofessional pain medicine clinic.

Background: In partnership with a Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) community of Maskwacîs,central Alberta (Canada), we implemented an Indigenous-led intervention to provide experiential learning opportunities for perinatal health care providers (HCPs) and staff. Our objective was to capture the impact of participating in cultural safety learning opportunities on perceived self-awareness for HCPs and staff to provide enhanced culturally informed care.

Methods: Perinatal HCPs and staff who work regularly with Indigenous women from our partnering community took part in a series of experiential learning activities designed by a Community Advisory Committee.

Purpose: To define patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) cut-off values for the EQ-5D-5L and Oxford hip (OHS) and knee (OKS) scores 6 and 12 months after total hip (THR) or knee (TKR) replacement. To compare PASS cut-off values for the EQ-5D-5L scored using: (1) the Canadian value set, (2) the crosswalk value set, and (3) the equal weighted Level Sum Score (LSS).

Methods: We mailed questionnaires to consecutive patients following surgeon referral for primary THR or TKR and at 6 and 12 months post-surgery.
