Predominantly multiple focal non-cystic renal lesions: an imaging approach.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

January 2025

Radiology Department, Centro de Diagnóstico Dr. Enrique Rossi, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Multiple non-cystic renal lesions are occasionally discovered during imaging for various reasons and poses a diagnostic challenge to the practicing radiologist. These lesions may appear as a primary or dominant imaging finding or may be an additional abnormality in the setting of multiorgan involvement. Awareness of the imaging appearance of the various entities presenting as renal lesions integrated with associated extrarenal imaging findings along with clinical information is crucial for a proper diagnostic approach and patient work-up.

Purpose: To evaluate whether a subtraction CT angiography (sCTA) perfusion score may have prognostic value in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

Method: This prospective cohort study included adult patients with RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to the ED and a sCTA performed within 24 h of admission between June and September 2020. Perfusion abnormalities (PA) in areas of apparently spared lung parenchyma on conventional CT images were assessed with sCTA perfusion score.

SARS-CoV-2 vaccine booster in solid organ transplant recipients previously immunised with inactivated versus mRNA vaccines: A prospective cohort study.

Lancet Reg Health Am

December 2022

Departamento de Enfermedades Infecciosas del Adulto, Escuela de Medicina, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Background: Solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients have worse COVID-19 outcomes than general population and effective immunisation in these patients is essential but more difficult to reach. We aimed to determine the immunogenicity of an mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine booster in SOT recipients previously immunised with either inactivated or homologous SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine.

Methods: Prospective cohort study of SOT recipients under medical care at Red de Salud UC-CHRISTUS, Chile, previously vaccinated with either CoronaVac or BNT162b2.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 seems to affect the regulation of pulmonary perfusion. Hypoperfusion in areas of well-aerated lung parenchyma results in a ventilation-perfusion mismatch that can be characterized using subtraction computed tomography angiography (sCTA). This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of oral sildenafil in treating COVID-19 inpatients showing perfusion abnormalities in sCTA.

Acute parvovirus B19 infection is a self-limiting disease in patients with normal immune response. However, in patients with blood dyscrasias, it is possible to present with an aplastic crisis. We present the case of a 48-year-old man who had developed an aplastic crisis as a result of an acute parvovirus B19 infection with an undiagnosed hereditary spherocytosis.

Background: Subtraction CT angiography (sCTA) is a technique used to evaluate pulmonary perfusion based on iodine distribution maps. The aim of this study is to assess lung perfusion changes with sCTA seen in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and correlate them with clinical outcomes.

Material And Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out with 45 RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients that required hospitalization at three different hospitals, between April and May 2020.

Multidetector CT for Evaluation of the Extrapleural Space.

Radiographics

December 2017

From the Department of Radiology, Hospital Naval Almirante Nef, Subida Alessandri S/N, Viña del Mar 2520000, Chile (M.G.S., G.V.L.H.); Departments of Radiology (M.G.S.) and Pathology (H.O.S.), Hospital Dr Eduardo Pereira, Valparaíso, Chile; Department of Radiology, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile (I.B.); Department of Pathology, Universidad Andrés Bello, Viña del Mar, Chile (H.O.S.); and Department of Diagnostic Imaging Centro Rossi, Buenos Aires, Argentina (M.M.V.).

The extrapleural space (EPS) is an anatomic space at the periphery of the chest that can be involved in a number of disease processes. This space lies between the inner surface of the ribs and the parietal pleura and contains adipose tissue, loose connective tissue, lymph nodes, vessels, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost intercostal muscle. It is often overlooked on cross-sectional imaging studies and almost invariably overlooked on conventional radiographic studies.

Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy associated with dermatologic findings. Its association with neoplasms is widely reported and has been shown to be higher in lung cancer, particularly small-cell carcinoma, probably as it originates from neuroendocrine cell precursors, as well as breast and ovarian cancer. The low frequency of dermatomyositis makes it difficult to suspect the underlying lesions among the diagnostic possibilities of systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations.

Uniportal VATS lobectomy in Chile began in 2013, in an old and small provincial hospital in Valparaíso, the main port of Chile, a few months after two thoracic surgeons had a short stay in Hospital La Coruña with the inventor of the most revolutionary technique in thoracic surgery of the last time. Four years after the first visit of Dr. González Rivas to Chile to sharing his initial experience, and after the explosive development of this technique especially in Asia, ALAT organization invited him again to our country as a main speaker in its International Congress, focused largely in uniportal lobectomy.

[Prevalence of delirium in hospitalized patients from an internal medicine service].

Medwave

November 2015

Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Valparaíso, Valparaíso, Chile; Servicio de Medicina, Hospital Dr. Eduardo Pereira, Valparaíso, Chile.

Introduction: Delirium is a common neurocognitive syndrome that takes place during hospitalizations, associated with worse global outcomes in patients who present it. Despite this, it is usually under-recognized as a disease that needs specific treatment.

Objectives: To determine the rate of prevalence of delirium in Internal Medicine Service patients and evaluate missed diagnosis of the syndrome made by attending physicians, medical residents or interns in charge.
