Brain reserve is an important concept to understand the variability of damage associated with brain-related diseases and includes the adaptation of cognitive processes to preserve brain function. A good cognitive reserve might delay the onset of clinical manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases as well as hepatic encephalopathy, improving the quality of life in patients with chronic liver diseases. By stimulating activities and maintaining overall health, individuals may be able to enhance their brain's resilience to age-related changes and pathology.

Background And Aims: Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) is a byproduct of the heme group that indicates irregularities in the metabolism of several important biological molecules, such as hemoglobin. UCB is processed by hepatic UGT1A1, which catalyzes its conjugation to the metabolites bilirubin diglucuronide (BDG) and bilirubin monoglucuronide (BMG). The serum concentrations of BDG and BMG may indicate liver injury or dysfunction.

Objectives: To quantify and qualify the experience of workplace violence (WPV) in a global sample of providers in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN).
Methods: We performed a mixed-methods analysis on data from a global survey. Survey content was designed around categorical and open-ended questions in relation to WPV; the occurrence and character, the physical and psychological consequences, training and support structures, and perceived triggers of the experience of WPV.

Bilirubin plays a key role in early diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention of liver diseases. Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) requires conversion to a water-soluble form through liver glucuronidation, producing monoglucuronide (BMG) or diglucuronide bilirubin (BDG) for bile excretion. This study aimed to assess the roles of bilirubin's molecular species-UCB, BMG, and BDG-in diagnosing and understanding the pathogenesis of liver cirrhosis in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), compensated liver cirrhosis (LC) patients, and healthy individuals.

The dot-blot is a simple, fast, sensitive, and versatile technique that enables the identification of minimal quantities of DNA specifically targeted by probe hybridization in the presence of carrier DNA. It is based on the transfer of a known amount of DNA onto an inert solid support, such as a nylon membrane, utilizing the dot-blot apparatus and without electrophoretic separation. Nylon membranes have the advantage of high nucleic acid binding capacity (400 µg/cm), high strength, and are positively or neutrally charged.

Background: Distraction osteogenesis is a process of induced bone generation. Various protocols have been described for the management of the latency period, distraction speed and consolidation period, with greater or lesser success.
Objective: To better understand the process of mandibular distraction and establish the determining factors and their optimal times.

Introduction: Pediatric androgenetic alopecia is a product of hormonal and genetic factors. The diagnosis depends on recognizing the hair loss pattern in the context of a positive family history and a typical trichoscopy.
Methods: A multicenter retrospective study assessing medical data from January 2008 to January 2023 of two reference centers - one public and one private in west Mexico.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MAFLD/MASLD), is a common chronic liver condition affecting a substantial global population. Beyond its primary impact on liver function, MAFLD/MASLD is associated with a myriad of extrahepatic manifestations, including cognitive impairment. The scope of cognitive impairment within the realm of MAFLD/MASLD is a matter of escalating concern.

Background: The classification and nomenclature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been the subject of ongoing debate in the medical community. Through the introduction of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and the later release of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the limitations associated with NAFLD are intended to be addressed. Both terminologies incorporate the metabolic component of the disease by providing diagnostic criteria that relies on the presence of underlying metabolic risk factors.

Impairments in liver function lead to different complications. As chronic liver disease progresses (CLD), hypoalbuminemia and alterations in bile acid compositions lead to changes in gut microbiota and, therefore, in the host-microbiome interaction, leading to a proinflammatory state. Alterations in gut microbiota composition and permeability, known as gut dysbiosis, have important implications in CLD; alterations in the gut-liver axis are a consequence of liver disease, but also a cause of CLD.

We analyzed the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data of 6519 clinical isolates of ( = 3985), ( = 775), ( = 163), ( = 781), ( = 124), and ( = 691) from 43 centers in Mexico. AMR assays were performed using commercial microdilution systems (37/43) and the disk diffusion susceptibility method (6/43). The presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes was assessed using PCR.

Pachydermodactyly (PDD) is an uncommon and benign digital fibromatosis of unknown etiology. It is characterized by a fusiform swelling of the medial and lateral sides of the fingers, with unspecific histopathological features of an increased number of fibroblasts, collagen, and mucin deposit in the dermis. Due to its rarity, PDD could be misdiagnosed as rheumatic arthropathies, which could lead to unnecessary immunosuppressant treatments.

Introduction: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) previously known but still debatable, as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease and subsequent cirrhosis worldwide, accounting for around 30% of liver diseases. The change in its nomenclature has been brought about by the novel discoveries regarding its pathogenesis, in which metabolic dysfunction plays the most important role. It is widely known that for every disease, the treatment should always be targeted toward the underlying etiology and pathogenesis.

Scleromyxedema is an uncommon and progressive fibromucinous disorder characterized by disseminated papular eruption with histological features of dermal mucin deposition. The skin changes associated with this disease are highly visible and they tend to affect the patient's quality of life. We report a case of a 50-year-old male patient that presented a 3-year-old history of disseminated asymptomatic firm papules-associated systemic symptoms.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a global concern. Analysis of sterile fluids is essential because microorganisms are defined as significant in most cases. Blood, cerebrospinal, and pleural fluids are frequently received in the microbiology lab because they are associated with considerable rates of morbi-mortality.
