Introduction: Adherence to Enhanced Recovery Protocols (ERPs) is associated with faster functional recovery, better patient satisfaction, lower complication rates and reduced length of hospital stay. Understanding institutional barriers and facilitators is essential for improving adherence to ERPs. The purpose of this study was to identify institutional factors associated with adherence to an ERP for colorectal surgery.

We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution.

We present the case is presented of an acute coronary syndrome in a 30-year-old patient with essential thrombocythaemia. Acute coronary syndromes occur in 9% of cases in these patients, and their management constitutes a challenge for the cardiologist, specifically in terms of choosing the most appropriate antiplatelet therapy and its duration, taking into account that these patients have a high thrombotic risk, as well as a considerable haemorrhagic risk.

Once patients have failed first line therapy, there is an apparent lack of knowledge on how to proceed with choosing subsequent therapy. To choose amongst alternative agents, an understanding of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and available evidence in targeting various pain conditions is necessary. This article focuses on the use of the carboxamide class of voltage-gated sodium channel blockers (carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, eslicarbazepine acetate) for adjunct pain medication management; including research updates in pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and evidence for pain along on this therapeutic group with promising future areas of research.

Introduction: Eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL), together with carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, belongs to the dibenzazepine family. According to the latest clinical practice guidelines, tricyclic antidepressants, dual antidepressants (venlafaxine, duloxetine), and some antiepileptics (gabapentin, pregabalin) are first-line drugs for neuropathic pain; tramadol, lidocaine 5% patches, and capsaicin 8% patches are considered second-line drugs; and strong opioids constitute a third line of treatment. Such other antiepileptics as lamotrigine and lacosamide are not authorised as treatments for neuropathic pain by the regulatory agencies, but are nonetheless prescribed off-label in routine clinical practice.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterized by widespread chronic pain. Its aetiology is still poorly understood, and there are no haematochemical or instrumental tests on which to base a diagnosis. Recent studies suggest that its pathogenesis may involve cytokines, in particular, chemokines - cytokines that regulate cell traffic under both physiological and pathological conditions.
