Department of Gastroenterology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China; Guangxi Hospital Division of The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Nanning, China. Electronic address:

Aims: Disease activity assessment and treatment outcome prediction are crucial in the patient management of ulcerative colitis (UC); yet the significance of platelet-to-lymphocyte percentage ratio (PLpR) remains unknown, which was investigated in this study.

Methods: We used data from three clinical trials: ACT 1, PURSUIT, and UNIFI. In total, 7,614 endoscopic procedures and 1,365 patients were included for assessing severity and predicting outcome, respectively.

Human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2-specific antisense oligonucleotides reduce infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

Department of Otolaryngology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China; Otorhinolaryngology Institute of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China; Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngology, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China; Department of Otolaryngology, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

Background: The Spike protein mutation severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) led to decreased protective effect of various vaccines and mAbs, suggesting that blocking SARS-CoV-2 infection by targeting host factors would make the therapy more resilient against virus mutations. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is the host receptor of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, as well as many other coronaviruses. Downregulation of ACE2 expression in the respiratory tract may prevent viral infection.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that may progress to erythroderma in severe cases. Biologic agents such as dupilumab have recently become the mainstay of systemic treatment for moderate-to-severe cases, yet many patients remain refractory to therapy. Here, we present a case of erythrodermic atopic dermatitis, resistant to prednisone and dupilumab, with remarkably rapid achievement of remission following treatment with upadacitinib, an oral selective Janus kinase 1 inhibitor.

Electronic address:

The Latarjet procedure is a frequently used stabilization procedure in case of anterior shoulder instability with critical glenoid bone loss and/or off-track Hill Sachs lesions. Although uncommon, intra-operative graft fractures do occur. When confronted with this potentially challenging intra-operative complication, having a secondary solution is paramount to achieve a successful outcome.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a life threatening disease in critically ill patients, and characterized by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammatory factors levels in the lung. Multiple evidences suggest that nanozyme with diversified catalytic capabilities plays a vital role in this fatal lung injury. At present, we developed a novel class of polydopamine (PDA) coated cerium dioxide (CeO) nanozyme (Ce@P) that acts as the potent ROS scavenger for scavenging intracellular ROS and suppressing inflammatory responses against ALI.

Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing and Health Promotion, Faculty of Health Science, Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway.

Background: Video streaming in emergency medical communication centers (EMCC) from caller to medical dispatcher has recently been introduced in some countries. Death by trauma is a leading cause of death and injuries are a frequent reason to contact EMCC. We aimed to investigate if video streaming is associated with recognition of a need for first aid during calls regarding injured patients and improve quality of bystander first aid.

During pregnancy, multiple immune regulatory mechanisms establish an immune-tolerant environment for the allogeneic fetus, including cellular signals called cytokines that modify immune responses. However, the impact of maternal HIV infection on these responses is incompletely characterized. We analyzed paired maternal and umbilical cord plasma collected during labor from 147 people with HIV taking antiretroviral therapy and 142 HIV-uninfected comparators.

Importance: Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is a novel technology that estimates the likelihood of developing future conditions (eg, diabetes or depression) and traits (eg, height or cognitive ability) in human embryos, with the goal of selecting which embryos to use. Given its commercial availability and concerns raised by researchers, clinicians, bioethicists, and professional organizations, it is essential to inform key stakeholders and relevant policymakers about the public's perspectives on this technology.

Objective: To survey US adults to examine general attitudes, interests, and concerns regarding PES use.

Exercise MR of Skeletal Muscles, the Heart, and the Brain.

J Magn Reson Imaging

February 2025

Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, Amsterdam University Medical Centers, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) is routinely used to evaluate organ morphology and pathology in the human body at rest or in combination with pharmacological stress as an exercise surrogate. With MR during actual physical exercise, we can assess functional characteristics of tissues and organs under real-life stress conditions. This is particularly relevant in patients with limited exercise capacity or exercise intolerance, and where complaints typically present only during physical activity, such as in neuromuscular disorders, inherited metabolic diseases, and heart failure.

Background: After an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), only 47% of military members return to full duty, possibly due to persistent neuromuscular asymmetries. Psychological factors may also contribute to reduced return to duty in military members.

Hypothesis: Psychological factors and time since surgery would be associated negatively with neuromuscular asymmetries, asymmetries would be greater in cadets postsurgery when compared with healthy controls, and asymmetries would be greater at earlier timepoints after ACLR.

Transl Gastroenterol Hepatol

February 2024

Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Control of Sun Yat-sen University, Ministry of Education, The Institute of Immunology of Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved eight CD patients treated with anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive drugs, alongside healthy donors for comparison, and analyzed T cell characteristics using flow cytometry.

Article Synopsis
  • - The increase in Crohn disease (CD) cases, especially with urbanization and globalization, is more related to environmental factors rather than genetics, suggesting changes in lifestyle impact gut health.
  • - The SOURCE study examined diet, microbiome, and genetic expression among newly diagnosed CD patients and controls from rural and urban settings in China and Israel to uncover links between lifestyle changes and CD.
  • - Findings reveal that time spent in urban environments alters gut bacteria and metabolites in rural residents, with specific dietary factors like coffee and vitamin D showing potential protective roles against CD-related changes.

Allergic airway inflammation (AAI), including allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic asthma, is driven by epithelial barrier dysfunction and type 2 inflammation. However, the underlying mechanism remains uncertain and available treatments are constrained. Consequently, we aim to explore the role of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in AAI and assess the potential alleviating effects of cationic polymers (CPs) through cfDNA elimination.

Electronic address:

Neutrophils are heterogeneous and plastic, with the ability to polarize from antitumour to protumour phenotype and modulate tumour microenvironment components. While some advances have been made, the neutrophil-targeting therapy remains underexplored. Activation of formyl peptide receptors (FPRs) by formylated peptides is needed for local control of infection through the recruitment of activated neutrophils while the potential contribution of antitumour activity remains underexplored.
