Childhood trauma and fear of childbirth: findings from a birth cohort study.

The aim of this study is to investigate if experiencing childhood trauma (emotional abuse, emotional neglect, physical abuse, physical neglect, or sexual abuse) or a greater total burden of childhood trauma increase the risk of fear of childbirth (FOC). This study included 2556 women living in Southwest Finland. Women were recruited during routine ultrasound visits at gestational week (gwk) 12.

In vitro biocompatibility of polylactide and polybutylene succinate blends for urethral tissue engineering.

Surgical treatment of urothelial defects with autologous genital or extragenital tissue grafts is susceptible to complications. Tissue engineering utilizing novel biomaterials and cells such as human urothelial cells (hUC) for epithelial regeneration and adipose stromal cells (hASC) for smooth muscle restoration might offer new treatment options for urothelial defects. Previously, polylactide (PLA) has been studied for urethral tissue engineering, however, as such, it is too stiff and rigid for the application.

Background And Aims: The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is stabilising in many Western countries. Some still show increasing incidence. Our objective was to determine the latest trends in IBD incidence and prevalence in Finland and to compare these among different age groups and between different geographical areas.

The impact of interprofessional education on students' current and desired competence in diabetes care.

Aim: To explore the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) on undergraduate nursing and medical students' knowledge, competence and targeted competence in diabetes care.

Design: Mixed methods design.

Methods: A voluntary IPE course of diabetes management was organized for nursing (n = 15) and medical (n = 15) students, who performed a diabetes knowledge test and self-evaluation of diabetes competence before and after the course and were compared with non-participating students.

Quality of pain counselling for orthopaedic patients in the hospital: A cross-sectional study.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the quality of pain counselling for orthopaedic patients in a Finnish central hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional design was used.

A qualitative study on multisector activities to prevent childhood obesity in the municipality of Seinäjoki, Finland.

Background: Multisector activities are needed to prevent childhood obesity due to its multifactorial background. The first aim was to identify the activities that had been undertaken for obesity prevention and deduce their main targets. Second, we analyzed the public health policy approaches (upstream, midstream, and downstream) which were followed.

3D laparoscopic prostatectomy: results of multicentre study.

Introduction: Three-dimensional laparoscopic prostatectomy (3D LRP) is a potentially cost-effective option for robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP). Results for two-dimensional LRP and RALP are well documented; however, little has been published on the outcomes of 3D LRP. Our objective was to report the perioperative and short-term results of 3D LRP in a multicentre study.

A Retrospective Review of Patient Records and Factors Associated with Decisions Made by Community Nurse-Paramedics' in Finland.

Community paramedicine (CP) has extended the role of paramedics and the main goal is to provide non-emergency care, which reduces the visits to emergency departments. The aim of this study was to describe the Finnish CP and examine the factors that were involved in CNPs' decision-making processes. The study was based on data from 450 consecutive CP patient records from three hospital districts.

APOE Genotypes, Lipid Profiles, and Associated Clinical Markers in a Finnish Population with Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors.

Introduction: The APOE ε4 allele predisposes to high cholesterol and increases the risk for lifestyle-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The aim of this study was to analyse interrelationships of APOE genotypes with lipid metabolism and lifestyle factors in middle-aged Finns among whom the CVD risk factors are common.

Methods: Participants (n = 211) were analysed for APOE ε genotypes, physiological parameters, and health- and diet-related plasma markers.

Staff participation in design with multiple tools: Impact on design and POE results.

Objective: This is a concluding part of an action research study to evaluate the impact on healthcare staff participation in the design of a new intensive care unit (ICU). Staff participated with multiple tools in the design; during the predesign phase utilizing co-design and virtual mock-ups, and also participating in the predesign evaluation (PDE) and postoccupancy evaluation (POE). Both the ICU design and evaluations were based on the principles of evidence-based design studies.

Impact of Comorbid Alcohol Use Disorder on Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Depressive Symptoms.

In psychiatric clinical practice, comorbidity of depression and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common. Both disorders have a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in general population. However, research on the impact of comorbid AUD on HRQoL among clinically depressed patients is limited.

Pressure injury prevalence and incidence in acute inpatient care and related risk factors: A cross-sectional national study.

The aim of this national cross-sectional study was to explore the prevalence of pressure injuries and incidence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries, and the relating factors in somatic-specialised inpatient care in Finland. The study was conducted in 16 (out of 21) Finnish health care organisations offering specialised health care services. Data were collected in 2018 and 2019 from adult patients (N = 5902) in inpatient, emergency follow-up, and rehabilitation units.

Community nurse-paramedics' sphere of practice in primary care; an ethnographic study.

Background: Primary care, the principal function of the health care system, requires effort from all local primary health care teams. Community Paramedicine (CP) has managed to reduce the use of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for non-emergency calls, but for the paramedic to move from traditional emergency calls to non-emergency care will mean new demands. There is a paucity of research exploring nurse-paramedics' experiences and perceptions of their novel roles as community paramedics in Finland.

Association of different enteroviruses with atopy and allergic diseases in early childhood.

Background: Enterovirus (EV) infections, being among the most prevalent viruses worldwide, have been associated with reduced risk of allergic diseases. We sought to determine the association between EVs and allergic sensitization and disease in early childhood.

Methods: The study was carried out in a nested case-control setting within a prospective birth cohort in Finland.

The impact of force magnitude on the first and second maxillary molars in cervical headgear therapy.

Aim: To study the effect of force magnitude on the maxillary first and second molars in cervical headgear (CHG) therapy.

Material And Methods: In this controlled clinical trial, patients (n = 40) were treated with CHG with a light (L, 300 g, n = 22) or a heavy force (H, 500 g, n = 18) magnitude. The subjects were asked to wear CHG for 10 hours a day for 10 months.

3D laparoscopic prostatectomy: A prospective single-surgeon learning curve in the first 200 cases with oncologic and functional results.

Background: Studies for 3D-laparoscopic prostatectomy (3D-LRP) learning curve and surgical results are lacking. Combining 3D vision to LRP attenuates differences compared to Robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) with similar mini-invasiveness but lower costs.

Materials And Methods: Two hundred consecutive men with localized prostate cancer underwent 3D-LRP at Seinäjoki central hospital between 2013 and 2018.

Nurses' Participation in the Design of an Intensive Care Unit: The Use of Virtual Mock-Ups.

Background: Co-design with multiple tools is useful when end users' knowledge is important, especially when designers work with people unfamiliar with design. Many studies have highlighted the importance of nurses' participation in design, and such participation requires the development of techniques and tools to facilitate collaboration. This article analyzes how nurses participated in designing a general intensive care unit in a walk-in virtual environment (VE) and examines how their work-related knowledge can be transferred to the design process of spaces.

Neonatal brainstem auditory function associates with early receptive language development in preterm children.

Aim: To study whether auditory function measured with brainstem auditory evoked potential and brainstem audiometry recordings in the neonatal period associates with language development 1 year later in preterm infants.

Methods: This retrospective study included 155 preterm infants (birthweight ≤1500 g and/or birth ≤32 gestational weeks) born between 2007 and 2012 at the Turku University Hospital. Auditory function was recorded in neonatal period.

Continuation of domestic violence and changes in the assessment of family functioning, health, and social support in Finland.

Our aim in this comparison study was to describe the continuation of domestic violence and to assess changes in the association among family functioning, health, and social support for participants who have or have not experienced violence for the years 2012 and 2015. We collected the data using a family functioning, health, and social support (FAFHES) questionnaire. We collected the baseline questionnaires ( = 188) from patients who visited a Finnish central hospital and mailed the follow-up survey ( = 71).

Sudden death in cardiac sarcoidosis: an analysis of nationwide clinical and cause-of-death registries.

Aims: The present study was done to assess the role of sudden cardiac death (SCD) among the presenting manifestations of and fatalities from cardiac sarcoidosis (CS).

Methods And Results: We analysed altogether 351 cases of CS presenting from year 1998 through 2015 in Finland. There were 262 patients with a clinical diagnosis and treatment of CS, 27 patients with an initial lifetime diagnosis of giant cell myocarditis that was later converted to CS, and 62 cases detected at autopsy and identified by screening >820 000 death certificates from the national cause-of-death registry.

Emergency Patients' and Family Members' Experiences of Nonconveyance Situations and Counseling Received From Care Providers.

Making nonconveyance decisions can be demanding for care providers in prehospital emergency services. Studies have found homecare instructions and counseling of patients and family members partly insufficient. A descriptive cross-sectional design was applied for this pilot study to explore emergency patients' and family members' experiences of nonconveyance situations and counseling.

Long-term health and treatment outcomes in adult coeliac disease patients diagnosed by screening in childhood.

Background: The diagnostic yield of coeliac disease could be improved by screening in at-risk groups, but long-term benefits of this approach are obscure.

Objective: To investigate health, quality of life and dietary adherence in adult coeliac patients diagnosed in childhood by screening.

Methods: After thorough evaluation of medical history, follow-up questionnaires were sent to 559 adults with a childhood coeliac disease diagnosis.
