Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined how eating and swallowing functions relate to health outcomes (like hospitalizations or survival) in elderly people living in long-term care in Japan over one year.
  • - Researchers assessed various factors (like drooling, coughing, and tongue movement) and collected demographic information to distinguish between those who experienced death/hospitalization and those who survived.
  • - The findings revealed significant links between certain eating and swallowing issues and health outcomes, suggesting that caregivers could use simple assessments for early detection and intervention to improve care and prevent serious conditions.

Effect of Acidic Beverages on the Hardness, Elastic Modulus and Wear Resistance of Giomer and Nongiomer Bulk-fill Materials.

Oper Dent

July 2023

Fusun Ozer, DMD, PhD, Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of acidic beverages on the hardness, elastic modulus, and wear resistance of four different resin-based restorative materials.

Methods And Materials: A total of 128 specimens (10 mm diameter, 4 mm thickness) were prepared from a conventional resin composite (Filtek Z250 [Z250]), a giomer bulk-fill (Beautifil Bulk Restorative [BBR]) and two nongiomer bulk-fill materials (Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill [TNC] and SonicFill 2 [SF2]). Each material group was divided into four subgroups (n=8) according to the storage media: artificial saliva (control), orange juice, regular Coke, and sports drink.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess CBCT scans of patients with medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ), osteoradionecrosis (ORN), osteomyelitis (OM) and jaw metastatic disease (JM), evaluate the presence and extent of radiologic findings, identify radiologic parameters that may distinguish the four entities and last, introduce a new modified radiographic index (CRIm), in order to contribute to the diagnosis of these conditions.

Methods: Τwo major databases were retrospectively searched for fully documented and diagnosed CBCT scans of MRONJ, ORN, OM and JM from 2006 to 2019. 335 CBCT scans met the inclusion criteria and were assessed under standardized viewing conditions blindly by 2 observers.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are among the most common human viral pathogens, affecting several billion people worldwide. Although in healthy patients clinical signs and symptoms of HSV infection are usually mild and self-limiting, HSV-infections in immunocompromised patients are frequently more aggressive, persistent, and even life-threatening. Acyclovir and its derivatives are the gold standard antiviral drugs for the prevention and treatment of HSV infections.

Ulcerative colitis and periodontitis - a cross-sectional pilot study from a Norwegian cohort.

Acta Odontol Scand

October 2023

Institute of Clinical Dentistry, Department of Periodontology, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease, which includes ulcerative colitis (UC), is an inflammatory disorder with potential impact on periodontal disease, but evidence to date for this association is limited. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of periodontitis according to the 2017-classification in a cohort of subjects with UC. The secondary aim was to assess a potential correlation of periodontal status with previous UC disease parameters and to assess oral health-related quality-of-life.

Background And Purpose: Many patients with chronic pain report hypersensitivity not only to noxious stimuli, but also to other modalities including innocuous touch, sound, and light, possibly due to differences in the processing of these stimuli. The goal of this study was to characterize functional connectivity (FC) differences between subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and pain-free controls during a visual functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task that included an unpleasant, strobing visual stimulus. We hypothesized the TMD cohort would exhibit maladaptations in brain networks consistent with multisensory hypersensitivities observed in TMD patients.

The enzymatic activity of APOBEC3B (A3B) has been implicated as a prime source of mutagenesis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The expression of Protein Kinase C α (PKCα) and Nuclear Factor-κΒ p65 (NF-κΒ p65) has been linked to the activation of the classical and the non-canonical NF-κB signaling pathways, respectively, both of which have been shown to lead to the upregulation of A3B. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of PKCα, NF-κΒ p65 and A3B in non-HPV related oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), by means of immunohistochemistry and in silico methods.

Background: The aim was to clarify the range of mouth opening required to minimize the development of oral mucositis on the palate while using a positioning stent during radiotherapy in patients with tongue cancer. A positioning stent is used to reduce the severity of oral mucositis; however, requirements for fabricating the device have not been standardized. In particular, the range of mouth opening required while using a stent to prevent radiation-induced oral mucositis has not been determined.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pharyngeal morphology and the success or failure of blind nasotracheal intubation using standard lateral cephalometric radiography and to analyze the measurement items affecting the difficulty of blind nasotracheal intubation.

Methods: Assuming a line perpendicular to the Frankfort horizontal (FH) plane, the reference point (O) was selected 1 cm above the posterior-most end of the hard palate. A line passing through the reference point and parallel to the FH plane is defined as the X-axis, and a line passing through the reference point and perpendicular to the X-axis is defined as the Y-axis.
