Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems for craniofacial imaging are now available from several manufacturers. CBCT potentially provides opportunities for 3-dimensional cephalometrics in orthodontic assessment of bony landmarks and air-bounded surfaces such as the facial skin. Two-dimensional cephalogram simulation could facilitate the transfer of growth projections from existing data sets as a starting point for use of a new 3-dimensional paradigm.

This study sought to compare the cutting efficiency of different diamond burs on initial use as well as during repeated use, alternating with sterilization. Long, round-end, tapered diamond burs with similar diameter, profile, and diamond coarseness (125-150 microm grit) were used. A high-torque, high-speed electric handpiece (set at 200,000 rpm) was utilized with a coolant flow rate of 25 mL/min.

Statement Of Problem: While surgical restoration of mandibular resections has advanced dramatically with free-flap techniques, oral function and patient perceptions of function, as well as treatment outcomes, often indicate significant impairment.
Purpose: This longitudinal prospective study was designed to determine whether conventional prostheses (CP) or implant-supported prostheses (IP) and current surgical reconstructive procedures restore patients' oral functions and quality of life to their status prior to segmental mandibulectomy with immediate fibula free-flap reconstruction. Study design and implementation, characteristics of the study sample, treatment completion rates, and selected presurgical and postsurgical functional and perceptual outcomes are presented.

Bone generation occurs around titanium implants; however, its underlying mechanisms are unknown. We hypothesized that molecular determinants distinct from those undertaking normal bone healing regulate osseointegration. Using differential display-polymerase chain-reaction in the male rat model, we isolated 3 genes that are differentially expressed in bone healing with implants, but not in osteotomy healing.

Mechanisms underlying the beneficial anchorage of roughened titanium implants have not been identified. We hypothesized that the implant surface roughness alters intrinsic biomechanical properties of bone integrated to titanium. Nano-indentation performed on two- and four-week post-implantation bone specimens of rats revealed that bone integrated to acid-etched titanium was approximately 3 times harder than that integrated to the machined titanium, both at the osseointegration interface and at the inner area of the peri-implant bone.

Introduction: Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common malignancy in the world. Fifty percent of the patients can be cured by surgery, radiotherapy or a combination approach. Head and neck cancer is life-threatening, and treatment may leave the patient with visible facial disfigurements and impairment of functions such as speech and eating.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems have been designed for imaging hard tissues of the maxillofacial region. CBCT is capable of providing sub-millimetre resolution in images of high diagnostic quality, with short scanning times (10-70 seconds) and radiation dosages reportedly up to 15 times lower than those of conventional CT scans. Increasing availability of this technology provides the dental clinician with an imaging modality capable of providing a 3-dimensional representation of the maxillofacial skeleton with minimal distortion.

This in vitro study evaluated the shear bond strength of a hybrid composite resin bonded to primary dentin prepared with an Er, Cr:YSGG hydrokinetic laser compared to conventional bur prepared primary dentin. The results suggest that primary dentin surfaces treated with the Er, Cr:YSGG laser, with or without etching, may provide comparable or increased composite resin bond strengths depending upon bonding agent used.

Purpose: To compare the dimensional accuracy of implant framework castings from an argon vacuum casting machine with those from a centrifugal casting machine.
Materials And Methods: Three 4 x 10-mm external hex-type implants (3i/Implant Innovations) were embedded in an acrylic resin block 7 mm apart, with a 2 mm offset of the middle implant. Eight reference points were marked on the implant collars.

Unlabelled: This study revealed that osteoblasts generate harder, stiffer, and more delamination-resistant mineralized tissue on titanium than on the tissue culture polystyrene, associated with modulated gene expression, uniform mineralization, well-crystallized interfacial calcium-phosphate layer, and intensive collagen deposition. Knowledge of this titanium-induced alteration of osteogenic potential leading to enhanced intrinsic biomechanical properties of mineralized tissue provides novel opportunities and implications for understanding and improving bone-titanium integration and engineering physiomechanically tolerant bone.
Introduction: Bone-titanium integration is a biological phenomenon characterized by continuous generation and preservation of peri-implant bone and serves as endosseous anchors against endogenous and exogenous loading, of which mechanisms are poorly understood.

The aim of diagnostic imaging for maxillofacial trauma is to provide additional information that can positively influence medical or surgical patient management. Current advances in diagnostic imaging have come from the confluence of 3 driving forces: (1) the demand from clinicians to enhance and expand their diagnostic abilities; (2) the development of new theoretical concepts by basic scientists; and (3) the application of concepts by engineers and manufacturers to provide increasingly sophisticated imaging capabilities. The role of imaging within the health care environment is, however, also buffeted by the complex, sometimes competing, interactions of external social, political, economic, and technological pressures at the national, regional, and local levels.

The critical load determined by the scratch test is regarded to be a representative measure of coating adhesion in the field of engineering. This study aimed to evaluate the method for its usefulness for assessing the mineralized tissue-titanium interface strength. Osteoblastic cells derived from rat bone marrow were cultured on polystyrene, titanium-coated polystyrene, and titanium disks with either a machined or dual-acid etched surface.

This case report describes an intensive care patient with recurrent endotracheal tube occlusion due to biting. The use and fabrication of a new form of custom built bite-block to resolve these problems is described. The device described may also provide better access for mouth care and simplify airway management compared with bite-blocks commonly used.

The application of implant therapy is still limited, because of various risk factors and the long healing time required for bone-titanium integration. This study explores the potential for osseointegration engineering with dental pulp cells (DPCs) by testing a hypothesis that DPCs generate mineralized tissue on titanium. DPCs extracted from rat incisors positive for CD44, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineralizing capability were cultured on polystyrene and on machined and dual-acid-etched (DAE) titanium.

Tissue engineering involves the construction of transplantable tissues in which bone marrow aspirates may serve as an accessible source of autogenous multipotential mesenchymal stem cells. Increasing reports indicate that the lineage restriction of adult mesenchymal stem cells may be less established than previously believed, and stem cell-based therapeutics await the establishment of an efficient protocol capable of achieving a prescribed phenotype differentiation. We have investigated how adult mouse bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) are guided to neurogenic and osteogenic phenotypes.

The biological mechanisms underlying bone-titanium integration and biomechanical properties of the integrated bone are poorly understood. This study assesses intrinsic biomechanical properties of mineralized tissue cultured on titanium having different surface topographies. The osteoblastic phenotypes associated with mineral deposition and collagen synthesis underlying the biomechanical modulation are also reported.

This study tested the hypothesis that flame cleaning of ceramic surface would increase the bond strength of composite to ceramic than pressure-vaporized steam cleaning. Eris and IPS-Empress ceramic blocks were fabricated, polished (control), airborne-particle abraded with 50-microm alumina particle (A), etched with 5% hydrofluoric acid gel for 2 min (E), or treated with a combination of A and E (AE). They were subjected to either steam cleaning for 20 s or flame cleaning over a gas burner for 2 s.
