The etiology of diffuse gingival enlargement is multifactorial, and the definitive diagnosis may be challenging. To highlight the nuances of the differential diagnosis, we present two cases of generalized gingival overgrowth and discuss the diagnostic dilemmas. In the first case, an 82-year-old male with a medical history of hypertension and prostatitis had a chief complaint of symptomatic oral lesions of a 20-day duration, accompanied by fever and loss of appetite.

The oral microbiota, second in abundance to the gut, is implicated in chronic systemic diseases, but its specific role in GVHD pathogenesis has been unclear. Our study finds that mucositis-induced oral dysbiosis in patients post-hematopoietic cell transplantation associated with increased chronic GVHD (cGVHD) even in patients receiving post-transplant cyclophosphamide. In murine HCT models, oral dysbiosis caused by bilateral molar ligatures exacerbated cGVHD and increased bacterial load in the oral cavity and gut with Enterococcaceae significantly increasing in both organs.

We describe a 1-day old female with features of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome and natal teeth. Genetic analysis confirmed GJB2 263C and A88V de novo pathogenic variants consistent with KID syndrome. Natal teeth were promptly extracted to avoid the risk of aspiration.

Objectives: To define tumor immunoarchitectural patterns (IPs) and characterize the immune profile in salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) toward assessing MEC prognostic significance and implications for immunotherapy.
Methods: This study analyzed 41 MEC cases, evaluating the tumor IPs and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) parameters by using whole-slide imaging and AI-assisted assessment. Immunohistochemistry of CD3 and CD8 markers was performed to assess key lymphocyte subpopulations.

Several studies have proposed the existence of an association between periodontitis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on biological premises. There is growing evidence that chronic inflammation caused by periodontitis may contribute to the progression of CKD. The present study aimed to investigate studies that link CKD and periodontitis, including periodontitis proxies such as oral hygiene and tooth loss, and patient-related factors such as inflammatory response and genetic polymorphisms.

Introduction: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients may experience neuropathic pain (NP) due to radiotherapy (RT), which may become chronic. Pregabalin, an anticonvulsant, alters the transmission of painful stimuli at the synaptic level, modifying their perception. Pregabalin is used in NP treatment, but limited data exist on RT-treated HNC patients.

This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of cortical bone canals' network through the analysis of lacunarity (Lac), fractal dimension (FD), and canal morphological parameters in the mandible (IR group, n = 7) of human patients under radiotherapy in comparison with non-irradiated younger (yC group, n = 8) and older (oC group, n = 8) individuals. Patients who underwent mandibular surgery were selected to have bone fragments removed during surgery, and undecalcified histological slides were analyzed by phase-contrast microscopy by two operators. The following morphological parameters were assessed in the Haversian canal (Ca): area (Ca·Ar, μm), perimeter (Ca·Pm, μm), and circularity (Ca.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic idiopathic orofacial pain disorder, characterized by persistent burning sensations and pain without clear pathological causes. Recent research suggests that small fiber neuropathy (SFN) may play a significant role in the neuropathic pain and sensory disturbances associated with BMS. Following PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review aims to evaluate and synthesize current evidence supporting SFN's involvement in BMS.

The stage of detection of head and neck cancer and the time between detection and treatment are critical to prognosis. The importance of the dentist in primary diagnosis and treatment planning has been emphasized. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of dental students in the prevention and early diagnosis of oral cancer.

Background: Treating oral problems with dentist intervention during hospitalisation may improve patients' food intake status.
Objectives: This study aimed to clarify whether convalescent rehabilitation ward inpatients in a hospital with hospital dentistry (HHD) had a better diet at discharge than those in a hospital without hospital dentistry (HNHD).
Methods: Retrospective observational study including inpatients with dental involvement in a HHD with dentists and dental hygienists and HNHD with dental hygienist and visiting dental service between 1 March and 31 August 2022.

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the activation of the PERP and Akt oncogenes in the induction of skin cancer in FVB/N mice by a stepwise chemical process. Forty four-week-old female FVB/N mice were randomly divided into a control group (n = 8) and two experimental groups (group A: n = 16, group B: n = 16). In the study, the groups were subjected to a two-stage carcinogenesis procedure.

Background: Cherubism is most commonly caused by rare heterozygous gain-of-function (GOF) missense variants in SH3BP2, which appear to signal through phospholipase C gamma 2 (PLCG2) to cause excessive osteoclast activity leading to expansile lesions in facial bones in childhood. GOF variants in PLCG2 lead to autoinflammatory PLCG2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (autoinflammatory PLAID, or PLAID-GOF), characterized by variably penetrant autoinflammatory, autoimmune, infectious, and atopic manifestations. Cherubism has not been reported in PLAID to date.

Background: Mandibular reconstruction has historically been challenging due to the complex, highly functional, and esthetic nature of the anatomy. The most common etiologies of these defects requiring resection include trauma, benign tumors, and malignant pathology. Mandibular defects have been treated with little consideration for neural reconstruction, leaving patient's orally incompetent with associated social stigma.

Osteomyelitis is characterized by an inflammatory process affecting both bone and bone marrow, leading to cell death and the formation of bone sequestrum. Recent literature from the past five years has documented instances of osteomyelitis following infections of SARS-CoV-2. This systematic review explores the link between osteomyelitis of the jaw (OMJ) and COVID-19 infections.

Introduction: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and jaw metastasis might share similar clinical and radiographic characteristics, with both demonstrating F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on PET-CT. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET-CT is used to demonstrate prostate cancer dissemination. Unlike FDG PET-CT, PSMA PET-CT is more specific to cancer than to inflammation.

The Indiana University School of Dentistry TMJ Institute is a multidisciplinary clinic designed to support the management of patients with challenging temporomandibular disorders. Professionals across dentistry, medicine, physical therapy, and social work collaborate to create a customised, interprofessional consensus to patient care. Compared with traditional, siloed healthcare models, are patients diagnosed with TMJ dysfunction satisfied with the quality of care received from an interprofessional approach? The objective of this study is to determine the level of patient satisfaction at the Institute using a 5-Point Likert scale patient questionnaire.
