Inflammation control is crucial in the prevention of ocular structural and functional damage. Regarding acute inflammatory control, corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment.

Mortality Associated with Hepatobiliary Disease in Portugal between 2006 and 2012.

Introduction: Hepatobiliary disease is becoming a major public health problem, and recent data suggest that the burden of liver disease is higher than previously thought. Our aim was to quantify the mortality from hepatobiliary disease in Portugal and to compare this with the mortality related o other causes over a 7-year period (2006-2012).

Materials And Methods: A statistical analysis of mortality data according to cause, sex, age, and region from the National Statistics Institute in Portugal was carried out.

We present the case of a 14-year-old female adolescent, admitted to the Emergency Room with fever, odynophagia and cervical adenomegaly.

EULAR recommendations for the use of imaging in large vessel vasculitis in clinical practice.

To develop evidence-based recommendations for the use of imaging modalities in primary large vessel vasculitis (LVV) including giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu arteritis (TAK). European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) standardised operating procedures were followed. A systematic literature review was conducted to retrieve data on the role of imaging modalities including ultrasound, MRI, CT and [F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) in LVV.

Depressive symptoms are associated with poor glycemic control among women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, depressive symptoms may be associated with metabolic deterioration. The impact of sex on this association is unclear. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between depression and metabolic control by sex.

Methemoglobinemia After Paracetamol Ingestion: A Case Report.

Methemoglobinemia is a potentially fatal condition, mainly acquired after intoxication by certain drugs. To this date, only three cases associated with paracetamol have been reported. This case report describes a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis who was self-medicated with acetaminophen for seven days (at a daily dose of 3 g); the patient went to the hospital after noticing the appearance of a diffuse brownish skin tone, without other symptoms.

Introduction: The Management of postoperative pain after abdominal surgery is a major challenge to the anesthesiologist. The optimization of postoperative analgesia improves prognosis contributing also to patient satisfaction and reducing morbidity and mortality. The aim of this randomized control study is to perform the comparative analysis in terms of effectiveness of an unconventional and still poorly technique implemented, continuous wound infusion, and the currently most applied and gold standard technique, epidural analgesia, in the postoperative period after abdominal surgery.

[Endocrinology in Portugal - Census 2016. Board of the Portuguese College of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Portuguese Medical Association].

Introduction: On September 2016, the Board of the College of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Portuguese Medical Association carried out a national survey, about all Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Departments of the public hospitals included in the Portuguese National Health Service and a simplified version of this survey was sent to all endocrinologists working in Portugal and registered with the Portuguese Medical Association.

Material And Methods: Data related to organizational and human resources were collected, reporting the situation by the end of year 2015. The census registered 107 individuals and 27 Departments.

Biomarkers and Imaging Findings of Anderson-Fabry Disease-What We Know Now.

Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, caused by deficiency or absence of the alpha-galactosidase A activity, with a consequent glycosphingolipid accumulation. Biomarkers and imaging findings may be useful for diagnosis, identification of an organ involvement, therapy monitoring and prognosis. The aim of this article is to review the current available literature on biomarkers and imaging findings of AFD patients.

Pneumonitis in Adult Onset Still's Disease: Uncommon or Under Diagnosed?

The adult onset Still's Disease is an uncommon entity characterized by multiple clinical manifestations. Pneumonitis, less often considered, deserves particular emphasis given the need for differential diagnosis and because it can progress to severe respiratory failure. With the aim to highlight the pulmonary parenchyma involvement in patients with adult onset Still's Disease, we present a case report which progresses with pneumonitis.

[Analysis of the Cochrane Review: Anti-vascular Endothelial Growth Factor for Prevention of Postoperative Vitreous Cavity Hemorrhage after Vitrectomy for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2015;8:CD008214.].

Postoperative vitreous hemorrhage is a complication following vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, delaying visual recovery and making fundus examination and disease follow-up more difficult. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs such as bevacizumab, when injected in the vitreous cavity, reduce vascular proliferation and their use has been proposed to reduce the incidence of postoperative vitreous hemorrhage. The authors of this Cochrane systematic review evaluated all randomized controlled trials on the pre- or intraoperative use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor to reduce postoperative vitreous hemorrhage occurrence after vitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Association Between Weekend and Holiday Admission with Pneumonia and Mortality in a Tertiary Center in Portugal: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Acute bacterial pneumonia is a common and potentially fatal disease where early recognition and treatment are crucial. Increasing medical literature suggests worse outcomes in patients admitted for medical and surgical conditions during the weekend. Little is known about this effect in patients with acute bacterial pneumonia.

Comparison of slow and forced vital capacities on ability to predict survival in ALS.

Introduction: Slow (SVC) and forced (FVC) vital capacities are the most used pulmonary function tests in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is unknown if they equally predict survival in ALS. The aim of the present study was to compare both measures in predicting survival in this disease.

Trauma Patient with Fat Embolism Detected on Computed Tomography.

Fat embolism is frequent following fractures of long bones, however the development of the clinical syndrome of fat embolism (characterized by progressive respiratory distress, mental status depression and petechial rash) is rare, but relevant because of its potential severity. We report a case of a trauma patient with multiple fractures of the right lower limb in whom an emergency computed tomography scan showed fat emboli within the lumen of the homolateral common femoral vein. The imaging detection of macroscopic fat emboli should alert the clinician to the potential for subsequent fat embolism syndrome.
