Methods: Three types of ultrathin LiF-based thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs)-two LiF:Mg,Cu,P-based (MCP-Ns and TLD-2000F) and a (7)Li-enriched LiF:Mg,Ti-based (MTS-7s)-as well as EBT2 Gafchromic films were used to measure percentage depth-dose distributions (PDDs) in a water-equivalent phantom with a bone-equivalent heterogeneity for 6 and 18 MV and a set of field sizes ranging from 5 x 5 cm2 to 20 x 20 cm2. MCP-Ns, TLD-2000F, MTS-7s, and EBT2 have active layers of 50, 20, 50, and 30 μm, respectively.

We present 2 cases of intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation that appeared shortly after the patients exercised on a vibration platform. The first patient was a 71-year-old woman who presented with lens subluxation in her right eye and a complete posterior IOL dislocation in her left eye. The second case was a 62-year-old woman who presented with unilateral IOL dislocation within the capsular bag in her right eye.

Background And Objective: The measurement of breathing pattern in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) requires the use of a mathematical calibration model incorporating not only anthropometric characteristics (previously evaluated in healthy individuals) but probably functional alterations associated with COPD as well. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between EIT measurements and spirometry parameters, static lung volumes, and carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) in a group of male patients to develop a calibration equation for converting EIT signals into volume signals.

Materials And Methods: We measured forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)), FEV(1)/FVC, residual volume, total lung capacity, DLCO, carbon monoxide transfer coefficient (KCO) and standard anthropometric parameters in 28 patients with a FEV(1)/FVC ratio of <70%.

Introduction: Primary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating of the palms, soles, and axillae due to overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system at the level of the second and third sympathetic thoracic ganglia. The treatment of choice is bilateral dorsal sympathectomy performed using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). The objective of our study was to determine whether lung function changes observed in a group of patients prior to bilateral dorsal sympathectomy performed using VATS were still evident 3 years after surgery.

A decrease in noradrenergic activity in Parkinson's disease might play a critical role in long-term motor complications associated with chronic dopaminergic replacement. Using the rat model of parkinsonism with an additional noradrenergic degeneration induced by the N-(-2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP-4) toxin we evaluated whether the circling motor activity and dose-failure episodes induced by levodopa (L-DOPA) differ between single (6-OHDA) and double (6-OHDA + DSP-4) denervated animals challenged with a single daily dose of L-DOPA. While single-lesioned animals showed a sensitization-desensitization turning response with a significant increase on day 15 and a decrease on day 22, in double-lesioned animals, the turning activity was maximal from day 1 and did not decay on day 22.

Objective: To address the minimum duration of pulmonary rehabilitation necessary for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to achieve a plateau in Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQL) and exercise tolerance.

Methods: COPD patients with a dyspnea rating of at least 2 on the Medical Research Council scale participated in an outpatient rehabilitation program of 3 weekly sessions for 12 weeks. Measurements included HRQL and exercise tolerance 2 weeks before the program started and every 2 weeks thereafter.

Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is the treatment proven to improve survival in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with chronic respiratory failure. It also appears to reduce the number of hospitalizations, increase effort capacity, and improve health-related quality of life. Standard LTOT criteria are related to COPD patients who have PaO2 < 60 mmHg, are in a clinical stable situation, and are receiving optimal pharmacological treatment.

Platelets are now regarded as playing a dominant role in cardiovascular medicine since our recent understanding of acute coronary syndrome as an atherothrombotic process. This development has led to the widespread use of antiplatelet agents, such as aspirin, thienopyridines and glycoprotein-IIb/IIIa receptor blockers, for the prevention of ischemic heart disease. Nevertheless, recent evidence suggests that not all patients receive appropriate antiplatelet therapy because there may be resistance or a variable response to the drug used or because of an increased risk of hemorrhage.
