Preserflo TM MicroShunt implantation combined with Ologen TM in primary and secondary glaucoma patients in a clinical setting.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of combining the Preserflo™ MicroShunt implant (MicroShunt) with a simultaneous Ologen™ implant in patients with glaucoma.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on consecutive patients with medically uncontrolled glaucoma who underwent MicroShunt + Ologen implantation as a standalone procedure or in combination with phacoemulsification (combined procedure). Success was defined as achieving an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 6-15 mmHg at 18 months post surgery, with a preoperative IOP reduction of at least 20%, and without (complete success) or with (qualified success) the need for antiglaucoma medications.

Comparison of Laparoscopy and Laparotomy in the Management of Early-stage Ovarian Cancer.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of minimally invasive surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer (EOC) by comparing the surgical and survival outcomes between laparoscopy and laparotomy.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective, single-center observational study that included all patients who underwent surgical staging for EOC by laparoscopy or laparotomy between 2010 and 2019.

Results: Forty-nine patients were included; of which 20 underwent laparoscopy, 26 laparotomy, and three conversion from laparoscopy to laparotomy.

Circulating progranulin in human infants: relation to prenatal growth and early postnatal nutrition.

Background: Progranulin (PGRN) displays pleiotropic biological functions and has been proposed as a biomarker for metabolic diseases. We longitudinally assessed PGRN concentrations in infants born appropriate (AGA) or small for gestational age (SGA), the latter being at risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes, especially if they experience an excessive postnatal catch-up in weight and are formula-fed (FF).

Methods: The study population consisted of 183 infants who were exclusively breast-fed [(BF), AGA, n = 66; SGA, n = 40], or FF (AGA, n = 31; SGA, n = 46) over the first 4 months.

Surgical treatment in older patients with endometrial cancer: A retrospective study.

Introduction: Older patients (OP) diagnosed with endometrial cancer (EC) are less likely to receive an optimal surgical treatment compared with non-older patients (NOP). This undertreatment along with the presence of more aggressive tumours at diagnosis can explain the worse prognosis of EC in OP. There is limited evidence comparing perioperative outcomes between OP and NOP, and the benefit of applying complex procedures to OP is still controversial.

The onset of PI3K-related vascular malformations occurs during angiogenesis and is prevented by the AKT inhibitor miransertib.

Low-flow vascular malformations are congenital overgrowths composed of abnormal blood vessels potentially causing pain, bleeding and obstruction of different organs. These diseases are caused by oncogenic mutations in the endothelium, which result in overactivation of the PI3K/AKT pathway. Lack of robust in vivo preclinical data has prevented the development and translation into clinical trials of specific molecular therapies for these diseases.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Maternal Well-Being during Pregnancy.

The outbreak of a pandemic has negative psychological effects. We aimed to determine the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic during pregnancy and identify the risk factors for maternal well-being. A multicenter, prospective, population-based study was carried out that included women (n = 1320) who were pregnant during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Barcelona (Spain) compared against a pre-pandemic cohort (n = 345).

Background: Supervisory effectiveness in long-term care facilities has been identified a key factor in staff satisfaction and quality of care. Determining its utility in Spanish speaking countries will assist with understanding different cultural and health service contexts.

Impact of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection on Pregnancy Outcomes: A Population-based Study.

Background: We performed a population-based study to describe the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on pregnancy outcomes.

Methods: This prospective, population-based study included pregnant women who consecutively presented at first/second trimester visits or at delivery at 3 hospitals in Barcelona, Spain. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (immunoglobulin [Ig] G and IgM/IgA) were measured in all participants, and nasopharyngeal real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed at delivery.

Vulvar hidradenitis suppurativa: Clinical cross-sectional study of 25 patients.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) involving the vulva is seldom reported in the gynecological or dermatological literature. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of HS with vulvar affectation (VHS) and to compare it with patients without vulvar involvement. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary academic referral centre in Spain from May 1, 2015 to October 1, 2019.

Ultrasonographic Patterns of Cutaneous Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a multiorgan disease characterized by the formation of noncaseating granulomas and possible skin involvement. Cutaneous sarcoidosis (CS) can be explored by ultrasonography when deep dermal or subcutaneous nodules are the clinical presentation. We reviewed the ultrasound characteristics of 14 patients (86% female; mean age, 55 years) with CS.

Early Progressive Circumpapillary Lesion as Atypical Presentation of Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome: A Case Report.

Classical clinical findings of multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) include multiple, small white dots scattered throughout the posterior pole, foveal granularity, posterior vitreous cells, and mild optic disc swelling. We describe the case of a 35-year-old man who was admitted to our department with an unusual presentation of MEWDS at the early onset of the disease. A unilateral circumpapillary retinal white spot was observed.

Description and relationships of the parotid gland levels proposed by the European Salivary Gland Society staging system: an anatomical study.

Objectives: To perform an anatomical study to analyze the size, weight, and the relationships of the parotid levels proposed by the European Salivary Gland Society (ESGS).

Materials And Methods: Anatomical dissections of the parotid region in 19 human specimens were performed. All dissections were systematically carried out to study the dimensions and weight of each level.

Effectiveness of a multidisciplinary BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL intervention for non-specific SUBACUTE low back pain in a working population: a cluster randomized clinical trial.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a multifactorial condition with individual and societal impact that affects populations globally. Current guidelines for the treatment of LBP recommend pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. The aim of this study was to compare usual clinical practice with the effectiveness of a biopsychosocial multidisciplinary intervention in reducing disability, severity of pain and improving quality of life in a working population of patients with subacute (2-12 weeks), non-specific LBP.

Progression of retinal pigmentation mimicking unilateral retinitis pigmentosa after bilateral pars planitis: a case report.

Background: To report our findings in a young patient with unilateral retinitis pigmentosa (RP)-like appearance who developed pigmentary changes in his left retina after an episode of bilateral pars planitis.

Case Presentation: A 17-year-old man presented with 6 months of blurry vision in both eyes. He was diagnosed with bilateral pars planitis.

Massive Silicone Oil Migration into the Subconjunctival Space: A Leakage Mechanism Dilemma.

Purpose: To report a case in which an early, massive silicone oil migration into the subconjunctival space occurred in a patient after sutureless vitrectomy with the presence of a previously implanted pars plana glaucoma drainage device.

Case Report: An 80-year-old man presented with neovascular glaucoma secondary to a proliferative diabetic retinopathy in his left eye. After an intracamerular bevacizumab injection and panretinal photocoagulation, a 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) combined with a superotemporal Ahmed pars plana glaucoma valve implantation was performed.

Reduced P-wave Voltage in Lead I is Associated with Development of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease.

Background: Reduced P-wave voltage in lead 1 (PVL1) has been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence.This study sought to determine the association between reduced PVL1 and AF in the NSTEMI population and the correlation between reduced PVL1 and interatrial block (IAB)/coronary artery disease (CAD).

Low-toxicity metallosomes for biomedical applications by self-assembly of organometallic metallosurfactants and phospholipids.

A new and convenient strategy for the preparation of metallosomes has been developed by mixing organometallic metallosurfactants and phospholipids. These aggregates show the characteristic properties of liposomes (stability upon dilution and low toxicity) and the toxicity is at least ten-fold lower than that of the metallosurfactant aggregates without phospholipids.

Comparison of the Extent of Coronary Artery Disease in Patients With Versus Without Interatrial Block and Implications for New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation.

Interatrial block (IAB) represents delay or block of conduction between the atria. IAB has been shown to predict the development or recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in various clinical scenarios. Few studies have examined the correlation between coronary artery disease and the prevalence of IAB and its impact on AF.

Asthma outcomes improve with continuous positive airway pressure for obstructive sleep apnea.

Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in asthma patients with concomitant obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) seems to have a favorable impact on asthma, but data are inconsistent due to methodological limitations of previous studies.

Methods: Prospective, multicenter study. We examined asthma outcomes after 6 months of CPAP in 99 adult asthma patients (mean age 57 years) with OSAS (respiratory disturbance index ≥20).
