Objective: To compare the incidence, characteristics, and risk factors of pressure injuries among critically ill patients with and without Covid-19 in an intensive care unit.

Method: Retrospective cohort study in an intensive care unit by collecting data from electronic medical records of patients admitted in 2021. Sample of 302 patients, 151 with Covid-19 and 151 without Covid-19.

The nursing practice environment and hospital sociotechnical complexity: a mixed-methods study.

Objectives: to analyze the relationship between the nursing practice environment and hospital sociotechnical complexity as perceived by nurses.

Methods: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was conducted in a hospital in southern Brazil. The Brazilian version of the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index and the Complexity Characterization Questionnaire were administered to 132 nurses.

We explored key microRNAs (miRNAs) related to tumorigenesis and immune modulation in glioblastoma (GBM), employing in silico, in vitro, and ex vivo analysis along with an assessment of the cellular impacts resulting from miRNA inhibition. GBM and T cells miRNA expression profiles from public datasets were used to evaluate differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs). Some DEmiRNAs were chosen for validation in GBM cell lines, primary cell cultures, and brain tumor patient samples, using RT-qPCR.

Background: Shorter courses of antimicrobial therapy have been shown to be non-inferior to longer durations for the management of several infections. However, data on critically ill patients with severe infections by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) are scarce. Hunger and the transition from parenteral nutrition in hospitalized adults: A descriptive cohort study.

Background: Parenteral nutrition (PN) provides nutrition to patients who cannot use the digestive tract. Some patients experience delayed appetite recovery after PN, but the factors contributing to this remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether hospitalized patients receiving PN experience reduced hunger or appetite.

A common form of dominant human IFNAR1 deficiency impairs IFN-α and -ω but not IFN-β-dependent immunity.

Autosomal recessive deficiency of the IFNAR1 or IFNAR2 chain of the human type I IFN receptor abolishes cellular responses to IFN-α, -β, and -ω, underlies severe viral diseases, and is globally very rare, except for IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 deficiency in Western Polynesia and the Arctic, respectively. We report 11 human IFNAR1 alleles, the products of which impair but do not abolish responses to IFN-α and -ω without affecting responses to IFN-β. Ten of these alleles are rare in all populations studied, but the remaining allele (P335del) is common in Southern China (minor allele frequency ≈2%).

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Elderly Patients in a Latin American Country: Analysis of 11 Year of Data from the Brazilian Registry SBTMO/CIBMTR.

This study analyzed recent changes in the utilization of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative diseases (MPDs) and the survival of HCT recipients ≥60 years of age in Brazil. This retrospective registry study included patients who received a first allogeneic HCT from any donor between 2012 and 2023. Of the 6657 patients, 444 (7%) were 60 years of age or older who received grafts from human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related (42%) or unrelated (20%) donors or HLA-haploidentical donors (32%).

Prognostic value of myeloid-derived suppressor-like cells in acute myeloid leukemia: insights from immunophenotyping and clinical correlations.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous population that acts on both innate and adaptive immunity, fostering immune escape in tumors and contributing to cancer progression. Despite the lack of definitive markers for immunophenotyping MDSCs, particularly the polymorphonuclear (PMN-MDSC) subset, these cells seem to play a crucial role in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients' prognosis. Additionally, the maturation stage of MDSCs remains a subject of debate and is largely unknown within the AML context.

This document is intended for prehospital care providers, physicians, allied health professionals, and hospital administrators and healthcare policymakers.

Methods: Members of the writing group were representatives of the World Stroke Organization and World Hypertension League.

Pharmacologic Treatment of Obesity in adults and its impact on comorbidities: 2024 Update and Position Statement of Specialists from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM).

Pharmacological treatment of obesity is passing through many changes in the last decades; different agents have been approved, and newer options are leaning towards higher efficacy and a more favourable safety profile; however, medications approved for a longer time are still available and useful for many patients. This document is an 2024 Update Position Statement of Specialists from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM), with the aim of reviewing all the approved medications for the management of obesity in Brazil (sibutramine, orlistat, liraglutide, semaglutide and bupropion/naltrexone fixed dose), with the addition of tirzepatide, that is approved in other countries and likely approved soon in Brazil. The review is focused on efficacy, safety profile and the impact of drugs (based on existing studies) on different comorbidities.

Lung ultrasound score and diaphragm ultrasound in weaning from mechanical ventilation: are they different in patients with and without COVID-19?

Objective: To compare pre-extubation physiological characteristics and ultrasound variables between patients intubated for COVID-19 compared to a clinical population and those intubated for other reasons.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for more than 48 h. Patients were divided into two groups: those intubated for COVID-19-induced ARDS and those intubated for other clinical reasons.

Concomitant myocardial infarction and systemic embolism associated with thrombosis of the right coronary ostium: a case report.

Background: Sequential occurrences of acute ischaemic stroke in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) and vice versa have been reported, but not the simultaneous occurrence of both conditions. We report a case of simultaneous occurrence of MI and systemic embolism caused by a mechanism not reported to date.

Performance of urine Xpert MTB/RIF ultra in a tuberculosis screening strategy in hospitalized patients with advanced HIV disease: Results from an implementation initiative in Brazil.

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra testing in urine samples as part of a TB screening strategy in patients with advanced HIV disease (AHD).

Methods: We conducted a multicentre prospective cohort study across three HIV reference hospitals in Brazil, between January and December 2023. The study included adult hospitalized patients with AHD, defined by a CD4 count of <200 cells/μL in the last 3 months or clinical presentation suggestive of opportunistic infection, without effective antiretroviral treatment.

Background: The variability in patients' risk of oral mucositis (OM) has been, in part, attributed to differences in host genomics. The aim better define the role of genomics as an OM risk by investigating the association between genetic variants and the presence and severity of OM in pediatric patients with osteosarcoma (OS) undergoing chemotherapy (CT).

Efficacy and safety of risankizumab versus methotrexate in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis: results from IMMbrace, a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 study with an open-label extension period in Brazil.

Background: Psoriasis, a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, requires long-term therapy. Risankizumab is a humanized immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody that specifically inhibits interleukin 23 by binding to its p19 subunit.

Objectives: Disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) is a lethal fungal disease in patients living with HIV in endemic regions of the world. Diagnosis relies mainly on microscopy, culture, and antigen detection. Our goal was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic role of our RT-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) in blood specimens allowing to quantify the whole nucleic acids (WNA) load.

The biochemical hallmark of D-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria is brain accumulation of D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D2HG). Patients present predominantly neurological manifestations, whose pathogenesis is still unknown. Thus, we examined the impact of elevated brain levels of D2HG, induced by intracerebral injection of this metabolite in juvenile rats, on redox and mitochondrial homeostasis and histochemical landmarks in the cerebral cortex.
