Newborn screening in Brazil: realities and challenges.

Neonatal screening is a critical public health initiative introduced worldwide to detect severe congenital disorders early in life. This study provides an updated overview of public neonatal screening in Brazil, highlighting the transition from initial pilot projects to a robust national program. Through the analysis of recent data up to 2023, we discuss the coverage and regional efficiencies of the program.

α-Ketoisocaproic Acid Disrupts Mitochondrial Bioenergetics in the Brain of Neonate Rats: Molecular Modeling Studies of α-ketoglutarate Dehydrogenase Subunits Inhibition.

Brain accumulation of the branched-chain α-keto acids α-ketoisocaproic acid (KIC), α-keto-β-methylvaleric acid (KMV), and α-ketoisovaleric acid (KIV) occurs in maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), an inherited intoxicating metabolic disorder caused by defects of the branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase complex. Patients commonly suffer life-threatening acute encephalopathy in the newborn period and develop chronic neurological sequelae of still undefined pathogenesis. Therefore, this work investigated the in vitro influence of pathological concentrations of KIC (5 mM), KMV (1 mM), and KIV (1 mM) on mitochondrial bioenergetics in the cerebral cortex of neonate (one-day-old) rats.

Background: Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is paramount in assessing patients with respiratory symptoms and chronic cardiopulmonary diseases. Although seminal studies have demonstrated that PFT generates aerosols, this simple observation does not confirm the potential for enhanced pathogen transmission.

Objective: We aimed to describe the frequency of patients who developed suspected symptoms of COVID-19, prompting SARS-CoV-2 testing after undergoing PFT during the reopening of a laboratory amid the deceleration of the pandemic.

Given the rate of advancement in predictive psychiatry, there is a threat that it outpaces public and professional willingness for use in clinical care and public health. Prediction tools in psychiatry estimate the risk of future development of mental health conditions. Prediction tools used with young populations have the potential to reduce the worldwide burden of depression.

Multicenter research in dialysis centers in Brazil: recruitment and implementation of the SARC-HD study.

Introduction: Multicenter research initiatives in Brazilian dialysis centers are scarce. We described the recruitment and implementation phases of the SARC-HD study, aimed at investigating sarcopenia and its impact on adverse clinical outcomes.

Methods: The SARC-HD is a cohort study being conducted with patients on hemodialysis in Brazil.

Perceptions of research integrity and open science practices: a survey of Brazilian dental researchers.

The objective of this study was to evaluate Brazilian dental researchers' perceptions of research integrity and open science practices, as well as their perceptions of the way researchers are evaluated for promotion, hiring, and receiving grants. In a self-administered online survey, the respondents were presented with 3 questions on researcher evaluation in Brazil. Additionally, for 25 academic activities or characteristics, researchers rated their perceived importance for a) career advancement, b) science advancement, c) personal satisfaction, and d) social impact.

Virtual Reality High-Intensity Interval Training Exergaming Compared to Traditional High-Intensity Circuit Training Among Medical Students: Pilot Crossover Study.

Background: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR) high-intensity interval training (HIIT) boxing protocol compared to traditional high-intensity circuit training (HICT) in improving exercise motivation, engagement, and physiological responses among 30 healthy medical students.

Objective: The purpose was to compare the VR HIIT protocol, which involved using an Oculus Quest 2 for a futuristic exoskeleton game experience, with a traditional 12-exercise HICT.

Methods: In total, 30 medical students engaged in both VR HIIT, using an Oculus Quest 2 for a futuristic exoskeleton game experience, and a traditional 12-exercise HICT.

Childhood maltreatment and the structural development of hippocampus across childhood and adolescence.

Background: Prior studies suggest that childhood maltreatment is associated with altered hippocampal volume. However, longitudinal studies are currently scarce, making it difficult to determine how alterations in hippocampal volume evolve over time. The current study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment and hippocampal volumetric development across childhood and adolescence in a community sample.

Background: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the standard of care for eligible acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) since 2015.

On-Target Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Adults with Diabetes Not at High Cardiovascular Disease Risk Predicts Greater Mortality, Independent of Early Deaths or Frailty.

Lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to <70 mg/dL is recommended for most patients with diabetes. However, clinical trials investigating subjects with diabetes who are not at high cardiovascular risk are inconclusive regarding the all-cause mortality benefit of the current target, and real-world studies suggest greater mortality. We aimed to assess the all-cause mortality at different LDL-C levels among subjects with diabetes not at high risk and to examine the potential roles of early deaths and frailty for this greater mortality.

Comparative Study of OLP and OLL: Demographic and Clinical Profile in a Reference Center in Brazil.

Objective: To compare the demographic and clinical profiles of oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) diagnosed at a reference center in Southern Brazil from 2010 to 2019.

Methods: This retrospective study included 117 cases of suspected OLP submitted for biopsy. Investigated variables comprised sociodemographic profiles, medical history, harmful habits, clinical characteristics, and histopathological features.

Prognostic evaluation of nutrition risk screening tools in hospitalized adults with normal weight range, overweight, or obesity: A comparative analysis.

Background: Many nutrition risk screening tools include low body mass index (BMI). It remains uncertain whether it affects the validity of these tools in patients with overweight or obesity. We aimed to determine the frequency of malnutrition risk and evaluate its association with hospital length of stay in hospitalized adults according to BMI classification.

Detection of carbapenemases in Enterobacterales susceptible in vitro to meropenem.

Introduction: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) is a global threat. We evaluate the prevalence of CPE among isolates categorized as meropenem-susceptible, but that meet the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) screening cut-off values for carbapenemase detection, and analyze the susceptibility of these isolates to new available drugs.

Methods: We analyzed 257 isolates from patients hospitalized in a tertiary hospital in Brazil, from July 2022 to April 2023.
