Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the content and quality of guidelines regarding vaginal mesh procedures for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) from various sources until March 2020.
  • Five guidelines were reviewed, with a consensus on preferring individualized, conservative treatments over mesh use, and identifying vaginal pessaries and pelvic floor muscle training as effective options.
  • Despite moderate to high overall quality ratings, areas such as stakeholder involvement and editorial independence scored poorly, indicating room for improvement in future guidelines.

Effectiveness of strategies to screen for blood donors with RH variants in a mixed population.

Transfus Apher Sci

Fundação Pró-Sangue Hemocentro de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Instituto de Medicina Tropical, Faculdade de Medicina da USP, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Introduction: Patients with RH variants presenting antibodies directed to RH high frequency antigens or multiple RH antibodies might, in some occasions, be better served with RH genotype-matched units, requiring screening for RH variants among blood donors. To date, strategies to identify donors with RH variants were restricted to selecting individuals of African descent based on self-reported race, what can be inaccurate in racially mixed population. Our goal was to: 1) Screen for donors with RH variants in a mixed population using self-declared race and Rh phenotype as selection criteria; and 2) Verify if including the Duffy null genotype in the screening algorithm increases its effectiveness.

Questions related to: (a) participants' thoughts about insulin before and after initiation; (b) reasons behind responses on the survey that were either 'not helpful at all' or 'helped a lot'; (c) actions their HCP may have taken to help start insulin treatment; and (d) advice they would give to others in a similar situation of starting insulin.

Purpose: This study evaluated the accuracy of the Mini-Balance Evaluation System Test (Mini-BESTest) for predicting falls in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and investigated whether postural balance is a risk factor for falls.

Methods: Postural balance was evaluated by the Mini-BESTest at baseline, and the incidence of falls over a 12-mo period was prospectively measured by a self-reported falls diary and confirmed by telephone calls. A discriminative power analysis was performed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and logistic regression analysis.
