Background: Diabetes carries an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and thromboembolic events. Upon endothelial dysfunction, platelets bind to endothelial cells to precipitate thrombus formation; however, it is unclear which surface proteins regulate platelet-endothelium interaction. We and others have shown that peri/epicellular protein disulfide isomerase A1 (pecPDI) influences the adhesion and migration of vascular cells.

Brain Perception of Different Oils on Appetite Regulation: An Anorectic Gene Expression Pattern in the Hypothalamus Dependent on the Vagus Nerve.

(1) Background: We examined the effect of the acute administration of olive oil (EVOO), linseed oil (GLO), soybean oil (SO), and palm oil (PO) on gastric motility and appetite in rats. (2) Methods: We assessed food intake, gastric retention (GR), and gene expression in all groups. (3) Results: Both EVOO and GLO were found to enhance the rate of stomach retention, leading to a decrease in hunger.

High ferritin is associated with liver and bone marrow iron accumulation: Effects of 1-year deferoxamine treatment in hemodialysis-associated iron overload.

Background: Iron (Fe) supplementation is a critical component of anemia therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, serum Fe, ferritin, and transferrin saturation, used to guide Fe replacement, are far from optimal, as they can be influenced by malnutrition and inflammation. Currently, there is a trend of increasing Fe supplementation to target high ferritin levels, although the long-term risk has been overlooked.

Resting-state electroencephalography delta and theta bands as compensatory oscillations in chronic neuropathic pain: a secondary data analysis.

Chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) remains a significant clinical challenge, with complex neurophysiological underpinnings that are not fully understood. Identifying specific neural oscillatory patterns related to pain perception and interference can enhance our understanding and management of CNP. To analyze resting electroencephalography data from individuals with chronic neuropathic pain to explore the possible neural signatures associated with pain intensity, pain interference, and specific neuropathic pain characteristics.

Impulsivity as a predictor of clinical and psychological outcomes in a naturalistic prospective cohort of subjects at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis from Tunisia.

Background: Impulsivity is associated with serious detrimental consequences on physical, mental, behavioral and social aspects of health among patients with psychosis. The present prospective 12-month follow-up study aimed to determine the prevalence of highly impulsive individuals among Ultra High Risk (UHR) patients, how impulsivity evolves over the follow-up period, and whether impulsivity impacts clinical, psychological and functional outcomes in this population.

Method: UHR patients were invited to complete a battery of measurements at three-time points: at baseline, and at 6 and 12 months of follow-up.

Trauma center rehabilitation systems in Latin America.

Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide with high rates of disability in survivors. With improvements in care, rehabilitation of the trauma patient is a cornerstone to reducing sequelae. A lack of well-established hospital rehabilitation units and standardized protocols for managing posttraumatic injuries is a common problem in Latin American countries.

Ultrasound evaluation in the postoperative period for surgical treatment of thoracic infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the role of TUSG in the postoperative period and the detection of early complications after surgical treatment, pulmonary resection, or decortication for infectious and inflammatory thoracic diseases, comparing with the standard method (Chest Radiography ‒ CXR).

Methods: Prospective non-randomized self-controlled study. Twenty-one patients over 16 years of age have undergone surgical treatment of inflammatory and infectious lung diseases.

Introduction: The use of three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomic models is steadily increasing in research and as a tool for clinical decision-making. The mechanical properties of polymers and metamaterials were investigated to evaluate their application in mimicking the biomechanics of the aortic vessel wall.

Methodology: Uniaxial tensile tests were performed to determine the elastic modulus, mechanical stress, and strain of 3D printed samples.

Early Toxicity and Efficacy of Four Different Conditioning Regimens for Autologous Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Patients With Lymphoma: Impact of Drug Shortages in a Resource-Constrained Country.

High-dose therapy followed by autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (AHCT) remains a viable consolidation strategy for a subset of patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) lymphomas. BEAM (carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, and melphalan) is widely recognized as the predominant conditioning regimen due to its satisfactory efficacy and tolerability. Nevertheless, shortages of carmustine and melphalan have compelled clinicians to explore alternative conditioning regimens.

Intravenous Golimumab in Children With Polyarticular-Course Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Long-Term Extension of an Open-Label Phase III Study.

Objective: To report pharmacokinetics (PK), immunogenicity, clinical effect, and safety of intravenous (IV) golimumab in children with active polyarticular-course juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pcJIA) who participated in A Study to Evaluate the Pharmacokinetics, Efficacy and Safety of Intravenous Golimumab in Pediatric Participants With Active Polyarticular Course Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Despite Methotrexate Therapy (GO-VIVA)'s open-label, long-term extension (LTE) through week 252.

Methods: GO-VIVA participants who continued IV golimumab (80 mg/m every 8 weeks) after week 52 were included. PK and safety were assessed through week 244 (last dose) and week 252, respectively, and clinical response through week 116.

Multidisciplinary care is essential for the management of patients with psoriatic disease (PsD), considering the great range of cutaneous and musculoskeletal symptoms and the potential for associated comorbidities and extraarticular manifestations. Consequently, combined rheumatology/dermatology clinics represent a gold standard model of care for patients with PsD. Many challenges are associated with the establishment of these clinics in routine clinical practice.

A multicentre study of amphotericin B treatment for histoplasmosis: assessing mortality rates and adverse events.

Background: Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis is a significant issue in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, contributing to high mortality rates.

Objectives: Our objectives were to comprehensively describe histoplasmosis treatment with various amphotericin B (AmB) formulations, including mortality rates, adverse effects and risk factors for mortality.

Methods: This multicentre retrospective cohort study (January 2014-December 2019) evaluated medical records of patients with proven or probable histoplasmosis treated with at least two doses of AmB in seven tertiary medical centres in Brazil.

Dietary Profile of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Clinical Remission-A Preliminary Study.

Imbalanced dietary intake is associated with the development of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) and is often observed during the active phases of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Cumulative data also suggest the potential for dietary manipulation in avoiding IBD relapse. However, there is a paucity of dietary data from patients in clinical remission to guide such an approach.

Long-term effect of obstructive sleep apnoea management on blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension: the SARAH study.

Background: There is a close relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and resistant hypertension (RH). However, studies assessing the long-term effect of diagnosing and treating OSA on blood pressure (BP) control in these patients are lacking.

Methods: To address this gap, we recruited 478 RH patients from hypertension units and followed them prospectively after they were screened for OSA through a sleep study.

Physical performance and plasma metabolic profile as potential prognostic factors in metastatic lung cancer patients.

Background: Low physical performance is associated with higher mortality rate in multiple pathological conditions. Here, we aimed to determine whether body composition and physical performance could be prognostic factors in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Moreover, we performed an exploratory approach to determine whether plasma samples from NSCLC patients could directly affect metabolic and structural phenotypes in primary muscle cells.

Large-scale analysis of structural brain asymmetries during neurodevelopment: Associations with age and sex in 4265 children and adolescents.

Only a small number of studies have assessed structural differences between the two hemispheres during childhood and adolescence. However, the existing findings lack consistency or are restricted to a particular brain region, a specific brain feature, or a relatively narrow age range. Here, we investigated associations between brain asymmetry and age as well as sex in one of the largest pediatric samples to date (n = 4265), aged 1-18 years, scanned at 69 sites participating in the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis) consortium.

Introduction: Estimates of the worldwide increase in amputees raises the awareness to solve long-standing problems. Understanding the functional brain modifications after a lower limb amputation (LLA) is one of the first steps towards proposing new rehabilitation approaches. Functional modifications in the central nervous system due the amputation could be involved in prosthesis use failures and Phantom Limb Pain (PLP), increasing costs and overwhelming the health services.

High Positive End-expiratory Pressure (PEEP) with Recruitment Maneuvers versus Low PEEP during General Anesthesia for Surgery: A Bayesian Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis of Three Randomized Clinical Trials.

Background: The influence of high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) with recruitment maneuvers on the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications after surgery is still not definitively established. Bayesian analysis can help to gain further insights from the available data and provide a probabilistic framework that is easier to interpret. The objective was to estimate the posterior probability that the use of high PEEP with recruitment maneuvers is associated with reduced postoperative pulmonary complications in patients with intermediate-to-high risk under neutral, pessimistic, and optimistic expectations regarding the treatment effect.

Clinical and genetic profiles of patients with hereditary and wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis: the Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis Registry in the state of São Paulo, Brazil (REACT-SP).

Background: Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is a multisystem disease caused by the deposition of fibrillar protein in organs and tissues. ATTR genotypes and phenotypes are highly heterogeneous. We present data on physical signs and symptoms, cardiac and neurological assessments and genetic profile of patients enrolled in the Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis Registry of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
