Introduction And Objectives: Many patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation are still left without protection due to a contraindication for anticoagulants. This study aimed to establish the occurrence of stroke and major bleeding events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and left atrial appendage closure with long-term follow-up and to explore the factors associated with higher long-term mortality.

Methods: Analysis of a multicenter single cohort prospectively recruited from 2009 to 2015.

The means of optimally managing very elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has not been established. We retrospectively analyzed 252 patients aged 80-100 years, diagnosed with DLBCL or grade 3B follicular lymphoma, treated in 19 hospitals from the GELTAMO group. Primary objective was to analyze the influence of the type of treatment and comorbidity scales on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).

Pattern of use of clozapine in Spain. Variability and under-prescription.

Rev Psiquiatr Salud Ment (Engl Ed)

May 2020

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM), España; Barcelona Clinic Schizophrenia Unit (BCSU), Institut Clínic de Neurociències, Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, Universidad de Barcelona, Barcelona, España; Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Barcelona, España.

Introduction: International studies on clozapine use usually show lower than expected prescription proportions, under-dosing and delayed initiation of treatment, which has led to a number of initiatives aimed at improving its use and reducing the striking variability observed among practitioners. There are no similar studies on the Spanish population. Therefore we planned initial data collection from 4 territorial samples.

Background: Bleeding risk scores have shown a limited predictive ability in elderly patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). No study explored the role of a comprehensive geriatric assessment to predict in-hospital bleeding in this clinical setting.

Methods: The prospective multicentre registry included 532 unselected patients with non-ST segment elevation ACS (NSTEACS) aged 80 years or older.

Background: a prolonged non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) condition can lead to advanced stages of liver disease and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Aim: to evaluate analytical, anthropometric and dietary factors associated with the presence of fibrosis as this is the factor that most influences survival and evolution.

Methods: seventy-six patients with liver biopsy-diagnosed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were included.

April 2018

Department of Cardiology, Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and CIBERCV. Dr Esquerdo 46. 28007 Madrid, Spain.

Aims: We aimed to determine whether treatment with sildenafil improves outcomes of patients with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PH) after correction of valvular heart disease (VHD).

Methods And Results: The sildenafil for improving outcomes after valvular correction (SIOVAC) study was a multricentric, randomized, parallel, and placebo-controlled trial that enrolled stable adults with mean pulmonary artery pressure ≥ 30 mmHg who had undergone a successful valve replacement or repair procedure at least 1 year before inclusion. We assigned 200 patients to receive sildenafil (40 mg three times daily, n = 104) or placebo (n = 96) for 6 months.

Prediction of recurrent clostridium difficile infection at the bedside: the GEIH-CDI score.

Int J Antimicrob Agents

March 2018

Unidad de Bioestadística Clínica, Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, Madrid, Spain; IRYCIS, CIBER Epidemiología y Salud Pública (CIBERESP).

Recurrence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has major consequences for both patients and the health system. The ability to predict which patients are at increased risk of recurrent CDI makes it possible to select candidates for treatment with new drugs and therapies (including fecal microbiota transplantation) that have proven to reduce the incidence of recurrence of CDI. Our objective was to develop a clinical prediction tool, the GEIH-CDI score, to determine the risk of recurrence of CDI.

Immunoparesis or suppression of polyclonal immunoglobulins is a very common condition in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. However, the recovery of polyclonal immunoglobulins in the setting of immune reconstitution after autologous stem cell transplantation and its effect on outcome has not yet been explored. We conducted this study in a cohort of 295 patients who had undergone autologous transplantation.
