: Oral anticoagulation (OAC) is pivotal in the clinical management of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) prevent thromboembolic events, but information about the quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction in relation with the anticoagulant treatment is limited. : REGUEIFA is a prospective, observational, and multicentre study that included patients with AF treated by cardiologists.

Background: Patients with chronic lung disease (CLD), such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, were expected to have an increased risk of clinical manifestations and severity of COVID-19. However, these comorbidities have been reported less frequently than expected. Chronic treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) may impact the clinical course of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is effective for treating calcified coronary lesions in patients with stable coronary disease, as shown in a study involving 426 patients across 26 centers in Spain.
  • The study found that IVL was successfully delivered in 99% of cases, achieving procedural success in 66% of patients and similar outcomes for both acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) groups.
  • The safety analysis showed a relatively low rate of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) at 30 days, with 3% overall (1% for CCS and 5% for ACS), indicating that IVL is both safe and effective in real-life clinical settings.

Int J Cardiol

November 2022

Servicio de Cardiología, Hospital Universitari Son Espases, Institut d'Investigació Sanitària Illes Balears (IdISBa), Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV), Spain; Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC), Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how sex and previous cardiovascular disease (CVD) influence 30-day mortality in patients who experienced ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
  • It analyzed 4,366 patients across 83 centers in Spain, finding that women and those with prior CVD generally had higher unadjusted mortality rates.
  • Surprisingly, after adjusting for other factors, the difference in mortality risk between men and women varied; women with prior CVD showed lower mortality risk compared to men, while no difference was evident in patients without CVD.

Article Synopsis
  • The PANDEMIC study analyzed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI), finding concerning outcomes compared to SARS-CoV-2 negative patients.
  • Results showed SARS-CoV-2-positive patients had significantly higher in-hospital mortality and poorer postprocedural blood flow (assessed by TIMI flow), with male patients at greater risk.
  • Key factors predicting higher mortality in these patients included being aged 75 or older, having impaired postprocedural TIMI flow, and presenting with cardiogenic shock.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving over 14,000 patients revealed that smokers were generally older, predominantly male, and had more underlying health issues, which contributed to their increased risk.
  • * The research indicates that both current and former smokers are at a greater risk for complications after being hospitalized for COVID-19, highlighting smoking as a significant factor in disease severity.

Analysis of the management of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in Spain. Results from the ACI-SEC Infarction Code Registry.

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

August 2022

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV), Spain; Servicio de Cardiología, Hospital de La Paz, Madrid, Spain.

Introduction And Objectives: ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) networks should guarantee STEMI care with good clinical results and within the recommended time parameters. There is no contemporary information on the performance of these networks in Spain. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients, times to reperfusion, characteristics of the intervention performed, and 30-day mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • Smoking is linked to more severe outcomes in COVID-19 patients, showing increased rates of ICU admissions and in-hospital mortality compared to non-smokers.
  • A study of over 14,000 COVID-19 patients in Spain found that smokers were older, predominantly male, and had worse health profiles.
  • The research suggests that both current and former smokers face a higher risk of complications from COVID-19, indicating that smoking is a significant factor in determining patient prognosis.

Angioleiomyomas are benign neoplasms, which usually present as solitary, slow-growing nodules on the skin of lower extremities, but acral location on the hands or feet is unusual. Yet, microscopically, they may show many histopathological variants, focal calcification is uncommon. Extensive calcification masquerading the real nature of the tumor has been rarely reported, the term acral calcified leiomyoma having been proposed for this entity.

Article Synopsis
  • Thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis (MG) patients are generally younger and exhibit more severe symptoms compared to those without thymoma, leading to a worse overall prognosis.
  • In a study of 964 patients, those with thymoma had higher rates of treatment refractoriness and mortality, particularly among those with nonresectable thymomas.
  • Although myasthenic symptoms worsened temporarily in some patients with recurrent thymoma, their long-term prognosis was similar to those with non-recurrent conditions.

The role of decentralized assessment of measurable residual disease (MRD) for risk stratification in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains largely unknown, and so it does which methodological aspects are critical to empower the evaluation of MRD with prognostic significance, particularly if using multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC). We analyzed 1076 AML patients in first remission after induction chemotherapy, in whom MRD was evaluated by MFC in local laboratories of 60 Hospitals participating in the PETHEMA registry. We also conducted a survey on technical aspects of MRD testing to determine the impact of methodological heterogeneity in the prognostic value of MFC.

Background The determinants and consequences of pulmonary hypertension after successfully corrected valvular heart disease remain poorly understood. We aim to clarify the hemodynamic bases and risk factors for mortality in patients with this condition. Methods and Results We analyzed long-term follow-up data of 222 patients with pulmonary hypertension and valvular heart disease successfully corrected at least 1 year before enrollment who had undergone comprehensive hemodynamic and imaging characterization as per the SIOVAC (Sildenafil for Improving Outcomes After Valvular Correction) clinical trial.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how the COVID-19 outbreak affected the treatment and outcomes of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in Spain, focusing on changes in patient care before and after the pandemic.
  • Results showed a 27.6% decrease in STEMI patient treatments and a significant rise in in-hospital mortality during COVID-19 (7.5% vs 5.1%) despite consistent use of primary percutaneous coronary intervention as a treatment strategy.
  • The findings indicate that COVID-19 led to longer ischemic times for patients and a notable incidence of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections during hospitalization, highlighting the challenges faced in managing STEMI cases during the pandemic.
