Background: The fear of contagion during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have potentially refrained patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from accessing the emergency system, with subsequent impact on mortality.

Objectives: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 registry aims to estimate the true impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the treatment and outcome of patients with STEMI treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI), with identification of "at-risk" patient cohorts for failure to present or delays to treatment.

Methods: This retrospective registry was performed in European high-volume PPCI centers and assessed patients with STEMI treated with PPPCI in March/April 2019 and 2020.

The High Bleeding Risk Patient with Coronary Artery Disease.

Cardiol Clin

November 2020

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Policlinico "G. Martino", University of Messina, Via C Valeria 1, Messina 98100, Italy.

Out-of-hospital bleeding is a common complication after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) due to the concomitant need for dual antiplatelet therapy. A significant proportion of patients undergoing PCI carry specific clinical characteristics posing them at high bleeding risk (HBR), increasing the risk of hemorrhagic complications secondary to antithrombotic therapy. Identifying patients at HBR and adjust antithrombotic therapy accordingly to optimize treatment benefits and risk is a challenge of modern cardiology.

November 2020

Unidad de Gestión Clínica Intercentros de Oncología Medica, Hospitales Universitarios Regional y Virgen de la Victoria, Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga (IBIMA)-CIMES-UMA, Universidad de Málaga, Málaga, Spain.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome are among the most prevalent health problems in developed countries. The impairment of adipose tissue (AT) function is partially responsible for the aetiology of these conditions. Epigenetics refers to several processes that add modifications to either the DNA or chromatin architectural proteins (histones).

Vascular disease is currently a major health problem, not only for its high prevalence but also for the considerable morbidity, mortality and disability that it entails. Medical internists play a central role in diagnosing and treating vascular disease and controlling the cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) that cause it. In fact, the clinical care of patients in cardiovascular risk units is a specific characteristic of an internist's field of action.

Extra-articular procedures for the improvement in rotational stability after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction have gained popularity in the last decade. This surgical gesture hoped to improve resistance to the high tensional forces affecting the ACL graft during cutting and pivoting movements of the lower extremity and eventually prevent ACL reconstruction failure. We performed this study to analyze the long-term results of patients undergoing ACL reconstruction using a nonanatomic double-bundle technique with an additional extra-articular augmentation.

Percutaneous cardiovascular interventions have changed dramatically in recent years, and the impetus given by the rapid implementation of novel techniques and devices have been mirrored by a refinement of antithrombotic strategies for secondary prevention, which have been supported by a significant burden of evidence from clinical studies. In the current manuscript, we aim to provide a comprehensive, yet pragmatic, revision of the current available evidence regarding antithrombotic strategies in the domain of percutaneous cardiovascular interventions. We revise the evidence regarding antithrombotic therapy for secondary prevention in coronary artery disease and stent implantation, the complex interrelation between antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with concomitant atrial fibrillation, and finally focus on the novel developments in the secondary prevention after structural heart disease intervention.
