Introduction And Objectives: Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been a major scientific and medical achievement in the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, very infrequent cases of inflammatory heart disease have been described as adverse events, leading to uncertainty in the scientific community and in the general population.

Methods: The Vaccine-Carditis Registry has included all cases of myocarditis and pericarditis diagnosed within 30 days after COVID-19 vaccination since August 1, 2021 in 29 centers throughout the Spanish territory.

June 2023

Department of Cardiology, Angiology, Haemostaseology and Medical Intensive Care, University Medical Center Mannheim, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) experience a higher long-term mortality rate post-COVID-19 compared to those without DM.
  • Among the studied symptoms, diabetics showed fewer cardiovascular complaints but a higher incidence of psychiatric issues like paranoia, and more respiratory complications as evidenced by abnormal spirometry.
  • Rates of readmission and reinfection after COVID-19 were similar for both diabetic and non-diabetic patients, indicating that the presence of diabetes does not significantly impact these outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving over 16,600 STEMI patients found a 16% reduction in PPCI procedures in 2020 compared to 2019, with the elderly experiencing the most significant delays.
  • * Consequently, there was a notable increase in 30-day mortality rates during the pandemic, particularly among older patients, attributed to longer ischemia times and treatment delays.

Article Synopsis
  • Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) significantly impacts hospitalized patients, increasing morbidity and mortality rates while often going undiagnosed and untreated.
  • A systematic review was conducted to assess the value of morphofunctional nutrition assessment tools, resulting in 12 GRADE recommendations across seven topics related to nutritional status evaluation.
  • Out of 37 statements developed from these recommendations, 26 reached consensus among 183 experts, highlighting the feasibility of these assessment tools in routine clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced the number of primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PPCIs) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients by 16% in 2020 compared to 2019.
  • Despite this reduction affecting both genders equally, 30-day mortality rates increased notably for female patients during the pandemic, while male patients did not show a significant change.
  • The analysis highlights the importance of addressing gender-specific outcomes in cardiac care during public health crises.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in visceral adipose tissue and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients undergoing surgery, highlighting how POP accumulation might be a significant risk factor for MetS.* -
  • A total of 117 patients were assessed, revealing that 35% showed clinical signs of MetS; specific organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analyzed in their adipose tissue samples, with linear and logistic regression models applied to determine associations.* -
  • Results indicated a positive correlation between waist circumference and all tested OCP concentrations, with specific pollutants like HCB and γ-HCH being significantly associated with increased odds

Article Synopsis
  • Heart disease significantly worsens outcomes for COVID-19 survivors, leading to higher rates of post-COVID complications and increased mortality.
  • In a study involving over 7,000 patients, those with heart disease were generally older with more health issues compared to those without, showing a 2.63 times higher risk of death.
  • The research highlights that vaccination against COVID-19 offers substantial protection, drastically lowering the risk of mortality for patients with pre-existing heart conditions.

Objective: To describe the sequelae one month after hospital discharge in patients who required admission to Intensive Care for severe COVID 19 pneumonia and to analyze the differences between those who received therapy exclusively with high-flow oxygen therapy compared to those who required invasive mechanical ventilation.

Design: Cohort, prospective and observational study.

Setting: Post-intensive care multidisciplinary program.

Short and long-term sequelae after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are to be expected, which makes multidisciplinary care key in the support of physical and cognitive recovery. To describe, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the sequelae one month after hospital discharge among patients who required ICU admission for severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Prospective cohort study.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent cancer in women. While usually detected when localized, invasive procedures are still required for diagnosis. Herein, we developed a novel ultrasensitive pipeline to detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in a series of 75 plasma samples from localized BC patients prior to any medical intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • The "smoking paradox" refers to lower mortality rates in smokers among STEMI patients, particularly in the context of modern primary PCI protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A large retrospective study revealed that among 16,083 STEMI patients, active smokers had better postprocedural blood flow and lower mortality rates compared to both non-smokers and previous smokers.
  • The findings suggest that despite initial challenges in treatment, active smoking was linked to improved heart health outcomes in this patient population, indicating the need for further investigation into this unexpected relationship.

The Working Groups of Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy of the Sociedad Española de Cardiología and Cardiovascular Disease of the Sociedad Española de Diabetes have prepared a consensus document on the treatment of hypertriglyceridaemia in patients with high/very-high-cardiovascular risk with icosapent ethyl, a highly purified and stable eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester. This document is necessary since there are differences among the three main omega-3 fatty acids and there is large-scale clinical evidence with icosapent ethyl that demonstrates that in addition to its efficacy in lowering triglyceridaemia, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular events in both patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and in those with type 2 diabetes, with a good safety profile. The number needed to treat to avoid a major cardiovascular event is analysed, comparing it with other pivotal studies of pharmacological intervention in cardiovascular prevention, and an estimate of the Spanish population likely to be treated with ethyl icosapent is carried out.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how SARS-CoV-2 positivity affects outcomes for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), using data from the ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 registry.
  • - Results showed that SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were older, more likely to experience cardiogenic shock, and had worse post-procedural outcomes, including lower blood flow and increased need for thrombectomy.
  • - Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 positivity was linked to higher in-hospital mortality (25.7% vs 7%) and significantly increased 30-day mortality rates (34.4% vs 8.5%), indicating that the virus

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is projected to become the third cause of mortality worldwide. COPD shares several pathophysiological mechanisms with cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerosis. However, no definite answers are available on the prognostic role of COPD in the setting of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), especially during COVID-19 pandemic, among patients undergoing primary angioplasty, that is therefore the aim of the current study.
