Natural killer cell (NKc)-based therapies offer promising outcomes in patients with tumors, but they could improve with appropriate selection of donors and optimization of methods to expand NKcs Education through licensing interactions of inhibitory killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (iKIR) and NKG2A with their cognate HLA class-I ligands optimizes NKc functional competence. This work has evaluated the role of licensing interactions in NKc differentiation and the survival of cancer patients. We have analyzed KIR and KIR-ligand genes, and the expression of activating (CD16 and DNAM-1/CD226) and inhibitory (NKG2A and iKIRs) receptors on peripheral blood NKcs in 621 healthy controls and 249 solid cancer patients (80 melanoma, 80 bladder, and 89 ovarian).

Introduction: Before 2010, prescribed home enteral nutrition (HEN) in Murcia was characterized by the great variability of the receptor patients, in addition to a higher use compared with other geographical areas. Objectives: Developing and describing a clinical pathway for attending candidates for HEN, and analyzing their profi le and prescription characteristics. Methods: Establishment of a clinical pathway for HEN prescription.

Obese dogs with and without obesity-related metabolic dysfunction - a proteomic approach.

BMC Vet Res

Department of Obesity and Endocrinology, University of Liverpool, Leahurst Campus, Chester High Road, Neston, Wirral, CH64 7TE, UK.

Background: Approximately 20 % of obese dogs have metabolic disturbances similar to those observed in human metabolic syndrome, a condition known as obesity-related metabolic dysfunction. This condition is associated with insulin resistance and decreased circulating adiponectin concentrations, but clinical consequences have not been reported. In order to define better the metabolic changes associated with obesity-related metabolic dysfunction (ORMD), we compared the plasma proteomes of obese dogs with and without ORMD.

Article Synopsis
  • Missing self-recognition in cancer makes it vulnerable to natural killer cells (NKc), yet this model overlooks the role of inhibitory receptors (iKIR) that enhance NKc reactivity by binding to specific HLA-I ligands.
  • A study involving 164 myeloma patients and 286 controls revealed that myeloma patients exhibited higher frequencies of certain KIR genotypes and less diverse NKc repertoires, which correlated with increased susceptibility to the disease.
  • Myeloma cells displayed over-expression of HLA-I, suggesting a unique interaction with licensed NKc that might lead to more effective immune responses against these cells, particularly in cases lacking conventional iKIR2D/HLA-C interactions.

The identification of tumor cells in lymph nodes is essential for the correct classification of patients with colorectal cancer who may benefit from adjuvant treatments. Proper classification of tumor stage becomes entangled by variables such as an insufficient number of lymph nodes examined, which can result in erroneous or missed diagnosis. The determination of pathologic factors in the primary tumor associated with positive lymph nodes is an area of research that has attempted to provide variables to solve this problem.
