The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed account of our successful experience in establishing a functional zebrafish holding facility by repurposing materials from a previous installation. On the eve of the start-up of our new animal facility we were notified that a research centre was putting part of its zebrafish holding facility (29 racks, accessories, water treatment unit) up for sale. Although the originally planned room was designed for six double racks, but encouraged by the increasing use of the zebrafish model, we decided to seize the opportunity, purchase the equipment and utilize it to create a larger configuration and an independent quarantine to protect the main facility.

Objective: Idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) precipitates epiphyseal fusion of growth plates in long bones, leading to reduced adult stature. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) are the treatment of choice for idiopathic CPP, but their benefit on height gain is unclear. We aimed to elucidate the effects of GnRHa treatment on adult height in girls with idiopathic CPP.

Background: Alemtuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Its efficacy and safety have been widely demonstrated in clinical trials, but experience from real-world cohorts is also needed to support its clinical use. Quality of life (QoL) outcomes are an important complement to the clinical benefits of treatment, offering a patient-centered perspective on how the drug contributes to general well-being.

We aimed to evaluate changes in biomarkers of inflammation, oxidative status and intestinal permeability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who received different PN lipid formulas.

Methods: This was a prospective study, including 94 patients with T2DM who received omega (n)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-enriched PN, a mixture of medium and long chain triglycerides (MCT/LCT) PN, or an olive oil-based PN.

Purpose: A analysis of data from a previously published clinical trial was conducted using the desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) methodology with the aim provide additional information on the use of fosfomycin for the treatment of bacteraemic urinary tract infection (BUTI) caused by multi-drug-resistant (MDR) .

Methods: Three DOOR systems with five, six and seven categories, respectively were developed. Safety and efficacy were prioritised in all rankings, but step down to oral therapy and exposure to antibiotics with lower ecological impact were also considered in DOOR-6 and DOOR-7.

Background: Switching to biosimilars is an effective and safe practice in treating inflammatory diseases; however, a nocebo effect may arise as a result of the way in which the switch is communicated to a given patient.

Objective: We aimed to design a gaming-based digital educational tool (including a discussion algorithm) to support the training of health care professionals in efficiently communicating the switch to biosimilars, minimizing the generation of a nocebo effect and thus serving as an implementation strategy for the recommended switch.

Methods: The tool was developed based on interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, both patients and health care professionals.

Poor clinical outcomes associated to multimorbidity, frailty and malnutrition in patients with atrial fibrillation.

J Nutr Health Aging

November 2024

Department of Hematology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), Murcia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on atrial fibrillation (AF) patients starting vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy to determine the effect of comorbidities, frailty, and malnutrition on clinical outcomes.
  • The research found that a majority of patients had multiple health issues, and frailty significantly increased the risks for major bleeding and death, while malnutrition heightened the risk for strokes and overall mortality.
  • These findings underline the importance of addressing these factors in AF patients to improve their health outcomes during VKA treatment.

Objective: To ascertain the changes of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP) values in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients treated with ocrelizumab and their association with treatment response.

Methods: Multicenter prospective study including 115 RRMS patients initiating ocrelizumab treatment between February 2020 and March 2022 followed during a year. Serum samples were collected at baseline and every 3 months to measure sNfL and sGFAP levels using single-molecule array (SIMOA) technology.

Endothelial activation, Cell-Cell Interactions, and Inflammatory Pathways in Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Following Cardiac Surgery.

Biomed J

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), CIBERCV, Murcia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between endothelial activation and systemic inflammation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, focusing on how these factors contribute to postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF).
  • Researchers compared 117 patients, including those with permanent AF and POAF, measuring various biological markers and cellular expressions related to heart function and inflammation.
  • Findings indicate that both permanent AF and POAF patients exhibited higher signs of inflammation and endothelial activation, which may lead to atrial remodeling and increased risk of AF compared to non-AF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research on late-life dementia highlights both neurodegenerative and vascular conditions contributing to the varied symptoms in patients, utilizing the Vallecas Alzheimer's Reina Sofía (VARS) cohort with over 550 participants and associated brain donations.
  • The study focused on 167 patients, primarily older women (79%) with an average age of 88, and found a significant presence of the ApoE-e4 gene variant (43%).
  • The main findings revealed that 79.6% had Alzheimer's disease, with a high prevalence of other conditions like vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia, and over 71.1% of the patients showed multiple neuropathological findings, indicating the complexity of dementia in this cohort.

  • An acute subdural hematoma (aSDH) can arise from a ruptured MCA aneurysm, with a complex pathophysiology and uncertain prognosis, but early diagnosis and treatment may improve outcomes.
  • Analysis of 25 cases revealed that most patients were around 51 years old, with significant loss of consciousness and neurological deficits, indicating severe cases requiring aggressive treatment.
  • The study suggests that identifying anterior MCA aneurysm characteristics in patients with large aSDH, particularly without trauma history, is crucial for timely intervention and potentially better recovery outcomes.
