The search for biomarkers for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases is a growing area. Numerous investigations are exploring minimally invasive and cost-effective biomarkers, with the detection of phosphorylated Tau (pTau) protein emerging as one of the most promising fields. pTau is the main component of the paired helical filaments found in the brains of Alzheimer's disease cases and serves as a precursor in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs).

Identifying early and non-invasive biomarkers to detect individuals in the earliest stages of the Alzheimer's disease continuum is crucial. As a result, electrophysiology and plasma biomarkers are emerging as great candidates in this pursuit due to their low invasiveness. This is the first magnetoencephalography study to assess the relationship between minimum spanning tree parameters, an alternative to overcome the comparability and thresholding problem issues characteristic of conventional brain network analyses, and plasma phosphorylated tau231 levels in unimpaired individuals, with different risk levels of Alzheimer's disease.

Introduction: Despite the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) having significant advantages as a cognitive screening tool, particularly for minority populations, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) test is the most widely used test for cognitive screening in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to develop a conversion table to predict MMSE scores from observed RUDAS scores, allowing an easy-to-use method to compare both screening tests.
Methods: The equipercentile equating method was used to develop the conversion table using a training sample consisting of cognitively intact participants and individuals with early-stage AD.

Clonal hematopoiesis, a condition in which acquired somatic mutations in hematopoietic stem cells lead to the outgrowth of a mutant hematopoietic clone, is associated with a higher risk of hematological cancer and a growing list of nonhematological disorders, most notably atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular disease. However, whether accelerated atherosclerosis is a cause or a consequence of clonal hematopoiesis remains a matter of debate. Some studies support a direct contribution of certain clonal hematopoiesis-related mutations to atherosclerosis via exacerbation of inflammatory responses, whereas others suggest that clonal hematopoiesis is a symptom rather than a cause of atherosclerosis, as atherosclerosis or related traits may accelerate the expansion of mutant hematopoietic clones.

Background: Platinum-based chemotherapy (ChT) has been the standard first-line treatment for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of induction avelumab followed by avelumab in combination with carboplatin-gemcitabine (carbo/gem) followed by avelumab maintenance. We tested the hypothesis that induction immunotherapy (IO) could enhance the response to ChT and prevent its detrimental effect on immune cells.

Metabolic rewiring promotes cancer cell adaptation to a hostile microenvironment, representing a hallmark of cancer. This process involves mitochondrial function and is mechanistically linked to the balance between mitochondrial biogenesis (MB) and mitophagy. The molecular chaperone TRAP1 is overexpressed in 60-70% of human colorectal cancers (CRC) and its over-expression correlates with poor clinical outcome, being associated with many cancer cell functions (i.

Background: There are multiple conservative treatment options for plantar warts, but none have proven to be universally effective. Nitric acid is often used empirically by podiatrists in the treatment of plantar warts. A novel medical device or topical solution of nitric-zinc complex solution (NZCS) could potentially offer an effective and safe alternative for the targeted treatment of plantar warts.

Placing a nasogastric tube (NGT) is a frequent nursing technique in intensive care units. The gold standard for its correct positioning is the chest X-ray due to its high sensitivity, but it represents a radiation source for critically ill patients. Our study aims to analyze whether the ultrasound performed by an intensive care nurse is a valid method to verify the NGT's correct positioning and to evaluate the degree of interobserver agreement between this nurse and an intensive care physician in the NGT visualization using ultrasound.
