Summary Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe the surgical technique, and assess the complications and middle-term results of the Contasure Needleless (Neomedic International), a single incision TOT sling for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The main concept of this device is that it is not a mini-sling, it has 138% more surface area. We are analyzing the results of a minimally invasive solution that is a TOT like sling with the same known benefits of a TOT and the advantages of a single incision technique.

Background: The mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of peripheral arthropathies (PA) in Crohn's disease (CD) are largely unknown, although many studies indicate that genetic and environmental factors are likely to contribute to risk.

Methods: Because variants in the Fc receptor-like 3 (FcRL3) gene have recently been associated with rheumatoid arthritis and several other autoimmune diseases, we tested 2 FcRL3 promoter variants (-169 C>T and -110 G>A) for association with PA in Spanish CD patients that were recruited from a single center and followed for at least 4 years (mean follow-up time, 11 years).

Results: Among the 342 CD patients evaluated, there were 88 cases of peripheral arthropathy; 31 were classified as arthritis and 57 were classified as arthralgia.

Thalassemias are hereditary anemias. In beta-thalassemia (beta-thal), beta-globin synthesis is either deficient or absent. A high incidence of beta-thal is found in populations of Mediterranean and African origin.

Background: The CellSearch System is a technique to detect circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with cancer. Few data have been published concerning the role of CTCs detection by this method in colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to correlate the presence of CTCs with the commonest clinical and morphological variables.

Unlabelled: In this study we validated intraoperatively the analysis of polymorphonuclear leucocyte frozen sections for diagnosis of infection in hip and knee revisions. Between 1996 and 2002 we examined sections and cultured periprosthetic tissues in prosthetic revision in 170 cases, including 146 cases (83 hips and 63 knees). We assessed sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), Youden index, positive likelihood ratio (PLR) and negative likelihood ratio (NLR).

This report describes the first case in Spain of a severe form of beta-thalassemia (thal) due to a compound heterozygosity for the IVS-II-848 (C --> A) and the nonsense codon 39 (C --> T) mutations. Five members of a family from Cadiz (southern Spain) were studied. The proband was an 8-year-old girl diagnosed as anemic at the age of 13 months.

Aim: To examine the contribution of interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene polymorphisms to Crohnos disease (CD) phenotype, and the possible genetic epistasis between IL-10 gene polymorphisms and CARD15/NOD2 gene mutations.

Methods: A cohort of 205 Spanish unrelated patients with Crohn's disease recruited from a single center was studied. All patients were rigorously phenotyped and followed-up for at least 3 years (mean time, 12.

Background: Atopic dermatitis is favored by exogenous factors, such as air pollution interacting with a genetic predisposition.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of sex and air pollution in the city of Cartagena on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis.

Design And Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using the ISAAC questionnaire in schoolchildren aged 13 and 14 years old from Cartagena (Murcia).

Background: Atopic dermatitis is closely related to other atopic diseases, especially asthma and allergic rhinitis. Although there is a certain agreement that suffering from atopic eczema predisposes to asthma and allergic rhinitis, the risk of developing these diseases should be quantified in populations following a standardized method, which is the objective of this study.

Method: Using the questionnaire from the International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood (ISAAC), we performed a cross-sectional study of all schoolchildren aged 13 and 14 years old in the city of Cartagena (Murcia, Spain).

Cardiovascular complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a poorer outcome from cardiovascular events than do patients without diabetes. Although part of this increased risk may be related to glycaemic control, other factors are also involved.

Postlaryngectomy tumoral recurrence on the stoma is a terrible late complication that has a fatal outcome. In spite of advances in laryngeal surgery and modern reconstructive techniques, it is still a major cause of death in patients with laryngeal cancer. In a review of 500 patients who underwent surgery for laryngeal cancer in 1981-86 and 1995-97, we found no changes in the frequency of stomal recurrence between periods (4% in both periods).
