Aim: To show our experience using the portable gamma camera during surgery in the detection of the sentinel node in breast cancer.

Summary Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe the surgical technique, and assess the complications and middle-term results of the Contasure Needleless (Neomedic International), a single incision TOT sling for the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The main concept of this device is that it is not a mini-sling, it has 138% more surface area. We are analyzing the results of a minimally invasive solution that is a TOT like sling with the same known benefits of a TOT and the advantages of a single incision technique.

FcRL3 gene promoter variant is associated with peripheral arthritis in Crohn's disease.

Background: The mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of peripheral arthropathies (PA) in Crohn's disease (CD) are largely unknown, although many studies indicate that genetic and environmental factors are likely to contribute to risk.

Methods: Because variants in the Fc receptor-like 3 (FcRL3) gene have recently been associated with rheumatoid arthritis and several other autoimmune diseases, we tested 2 FcRL3 promoter variants (-169 C>T and -110 G>A) for association with PA in Spanish CD patients that were recruited from a single center and followed for at least 4 years (mean follow-up time, 11 years).

Results: Among the 342 CD patients evaluated, there were 88 cases of peripheral arthropathy; 31 were classified as arthritis and 57 were classified as arthralgia.

Few data have been published concerning the role of CTCs detection by this method in colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to correlate the presence of CTCs with the commonest clinical and morphological variables.

Reconstruction of bone defects with impacted allograft in femoral stem revision surgery.

A retrospective clinical review was done on 54 revision hip patients. Radiological analysis examined the Gross and AAOS classifications, stem position, cement mantles, allograft and evolution (subsidence, resorption and remodelling). The Harris Hip score was used for clinical assessment.

First Spanish case of thalassemia major due to a compound heterozygosity for the IVS-II-848 (C --> A) and codon 39 (C --> T) mutations of the beta-globin gene.

This report describes the first case in Spain of a severe form of beta-thalassemia (thal) due to a compound heterozygosity for the IVS-II-848 (C --> A) and the nonsense codon 39 (C --> T) mutations. Five members of a family from Cadiz (southern Spain) were studied. The proband was an 8-year-old girl diagnosed as anemic at the age of 13 months.

Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes.

Cardiovascular complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a poorer outcome from cardiovascular events than do patients without diabetes. [Stomal recurrence after laryngectomy. An inevitable late complication].
