Aims: The "Discrimination and Stigma Scale" (DISC) was the first instrument specifically designed to evaluate reported experiences of discrimination by people with mental disorders. This study aims to validate DISC-12 version in Spanish population with Schizophrenia and, as specific objectives, to do the external validation with the Self-Stigma Questionnaire (SSQ) scale and Link PDD scale and to validate their internal consistency, temporal and inter-rater reliability.

Methods: 86 individuals with schizophrenia were interviewed at two time points (between one to two weeks) by two raters.

Several lines of research have linked olfactory regions with the pathophysiology of focal epilepsies. Among those regions, the piriform cortex represents the major part of the primary olfactory cortex. According to these data, we raised the hypothesis that in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy associated with hippocampal sclerosis exists an interictal dysfunction of olfactory processing that could be more significant compared to patients with extra-hippocampal focal epilepsy and healthy controls.

Objectives: To investigate urodynamic changes during the voiding phase in males with detrusor underactivity (DU) undergoing bladder catheterization for urinary retention.

Methods: From a total of 64 patients with urinary retention, a follow-up study was performed in 17 males with a mean age of 77 years. Patients received a urodynamic diagnosis of DU based on a Bladder Contractility Index (BCI) score of < 100 and underwent permanent bladder catheterization (16 cases) or clean intermittent catheterization (1 case) for acute urinary retention (14 cases), or post void residual urine (3 cases).

The Use of Botulinum Toxin in Strabismus Treatment.

J Binocul Vis Ocul Motil

December 2019

a Facultad de Medicina, IIORC, and Hospital Clinico San Carlos Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain , Madrid , Spain.

There is a long and extensive experience with the use of Botulinum Toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection in the treatment of different types of strabismus and oculomotor palsies. The frequency of its use varies depending on the country and institution. It is a short procedure, may reduce general anesthesia exposure, causes minimal scarring compared to surgery, and can be proposed as an early treatment in unstable strabismus.

Introduction: Neurocognitive impairment is considered an essential symptom of schizophrenia, particularly in its early stages. Nonetheless, the neuropsychological features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) could cast doubt on the specificity of neurocognitive dysfunctions. The aim of this study is to determine whether neurocognitive deficits are specific to schizophrenia-spectrum conditions as compared to a similarly severe psychiatric illness like BPD.

Importance: In low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis (LFLG AS), the severity of left ventricular dysfunction remains a key factor in the evaluation of aortic valve replacement.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical outcomes and changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with LFLG AS and severe left ventricular dysfunction.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter registry is a substudy of the True or Pseudo-Severe Aortic Stenosis-TAVI registry that included patients with classic LFLG AS, defined as a mean transvalvular gradient less than 35 mm Hg, an effective orifice area less than 1.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to profile elderly patients (65+) who seek emergency care after falling, focusing on the characteristics of the falls and the severity involved.
  • Conducted through a multicenter registry involving 1507 interviews, the research found high levels of comorbidity and a tendency for falls to occur at home during the day, often unobserved.
  • Only a third of patients received fall prevention recommendations, with certain factors like cognitive impairment and fear of falling influencing the likelihood of receiving such recommendations.

Hydrogels-Assisted Cell Engraftment for Repairing the Stroke-Damaged Brain: Chimera or Reality.

Polymers (Basel)

February 2018

Neurocomputing and Neurorobotics Research Group: Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Optics, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 28040 Madrid, Spain.

The use of advanced biomaterials as a structural and functional support for stem cells-based therapeutic implants has boosted the development of tissue engineering applications in multiple clinical fields. In relation to neurological disorders, we are still far from the clinical reality of restoring normal brain function in neurodegenerative diseases and cerebrovascular disorders. Hydrogel polymers show unique mechanical stiffness properties in the range of living soft tissues such as nervous tissue.
