Background: The prevalence and severity of perimenopausal symptoms are typically associated with multiple factors, including demographic characteristics. The sociodemographic characteristics of women living in rural areas differ from those residing in urban areas, and it has been suggested that these differences could potentially influence the prevalence of symptoms experienced during perimenopause.

Objectives: To evaluate if perimenopausal women living in Spanish rural areas have a higher prevalence of perimenopausal symptoms and assess their influence on health-related quality of life.

Correlation between tobacco control policies and tobacco prevention in Mexico: a sub-national analysis.

J Public Health Policy

June 2024

Department of Maternal and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, P/ Ramón y Cajal s/n, 28040, Madrid, Spain.

This study aims to determinate the correlation between tobacco control policies (TCP) and the prevalence of tobacco use in the 32 Mexican states during the 2016-2017 period. This is an ecological study that measured TCP by the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) which assigns a score (0-100) based on the level of these component's implementation: price, prohibition in public spaces, expenditures of public information campaigns, publicity prohibitions, health warnings, and treatments. We analyzed the associations between the TCS scores and prevalence of tobacco use extracted from the National Survey of Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption using Spearman correlations.

Mitochondrial Haplogroups and Weight Gain After Initiating ART in Patients With HIV.

J Infect Dis

August 2024

Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Infecciosas, Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed how mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups relate to weight gain and Body Mass Index (BMI) in 1,019 HIV-positive individuals who started first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) since 2014.
  • Over 96 weeks, participants experienced an average weight increase of 2.90 kg and a BMI increase of 0.98 kg/m².
  • The results showed that a specific UK mtDNA haplogroup was significantly associated with less weight and BMI gain after starting ART, suggesting mitochondrial genetics could influence weight changes in people living with HIV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates risk factors for developing postoperative overactive bladder (OAB) in patients who received an adjustable trans-obturator male system (ATOMS) for stress incontinence after prostate cancer treatment.
  • It involved 56 patients, collecting clinical and urodynamic data before and after ATOMS implantation to identify factors impacting OAB and treatment efficacy.
  • Key findings included that higher preoperative urinary incontinence intensity, poor ICIQ scores, and specific urodynamic measures (like bladder capacity and urethral resistance) are significant risk factors for developing OAB, with detrusor overactivity being a crucial element.

Gut Microbiota and Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids Are Linked to Evolution of Heart Failure Patients.

Int J Mol Sci

September 2023

Laboratorio de Riesgo Cardiovascular y Microbiota, Hospital Clínico San Carlos, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria San Carlos (IdISSC), 28040 Madrid, Spain.

There is a lack of direct evidence regarding gut microbiota dysbiosis and changes in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in heart failure (HF) patients. We sought to assess any association between gut microbiota composition, SCFA production, clinical parameters, and the inflammatory profile in a cohort of newly diagnosed HF patients. In this longitudinal prospective study, we enrolled eighteen newly diagnosed HF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the incidence and effects of late bleeding events (LBEs) in patients who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) before transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • Among 1,457 patients analyzed, 7.9% experienced LBEs after TAVR, with various severities impacting long-term mortality rates.
  • It concludes that LBEs significantly heighten the risk of death after TAVR and highlights the need for effective strategies to prevent these events and optimize antithrombotic treatments.

Introduction: Standard therapy for HIV treatment has consisted of two nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) paired with a third agent. Use of two-drug regimens (2DR) has been considered for selected patients in part to avoid toxicities associated with the use of NRTIs. This study aimed to compare the real-world outcomes of integrase inhibitor (INSTI)-based three-drug regimens (3DR) versus 2DR of dolutegravir (DTG) + rilpivirine (RPV) or DTG + lamivudine (3TC).

Introduction The clinical behavior and prognosis of patients with asymptomatic paradoxical low-gradient aortic stenosis (PLGAS) still remain controversial. Some authors consider PLGAS as an echocardiographically poorly quantified moderate AS (MAS). We aimed to investigate the clinical behavior of PLGAS by comparing it with that of asymptomatic high-gradient aortic stenosis (HG-AS) and MAS using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) with speckle tracking imaging (STI) and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).

We aimed to develop two models to estimate first AMI and stroke/TIA, respectively, in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, by applying backward elimination to the following variables: age, sex, duration of diabetes, smoking, BMI, and use of antihyperglycemic drugs, statins, and aspirin. As time-varying covariates, we analyzed blood pressure, albuminuria, lipid profile, HbA1c, retinopathy, neuropathy, and atrial fibrillation (only in stroke/TIA model). Both models were stratified by antihypertensive drugs.
