Therapeutic hypothermia in preterm infants under 36 weeks: Case series on outcomes and brain MRI findings.

Eur J Pediatr

January 2025

Neonatology Department. Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Center for Maternal Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. Neonatal Brain Group, Universitat de Barcelona. Hospital Clínic, Universitat de Barcelona. BCNatal - Barcelona, Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona, Spain.

Purpose: Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a significant cause of neonatal brain injury. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the standard treatment for term neonates, but its safety and efficacy in neonates < 36 weeks gestational age (GA) remains unclear. This case series aimed to evaluate the outcomes of preterm infants with HIE treated with TH.

Background And Study Aims: Crohn's disease (CD) is often complicated by perianal fistulas or abscesses that worsen patient's quality of life, with 52-88% of CD-related perianal fistulas (CPFs) being complex. This retrospective study describes sociodemographic characteristics, treatment patterns and outcomes of patients with complex CPFs in five European countries.

Patients And Methods: PREFACE is a multi-national medical chart review study of CD patients who started medical or surgical treatment for a new episode of complex CPFs between September 2011 and September 2014 (index date).

Rationale and design of the beta-blockers in tako-tsubo syndrome study: a randomized clinical trial (β-Tako).

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

December 2024

Center of Excellence of Cardiovascular Sciences, Ospedale Isola Tiberina - Gemelli Isola, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy.

Unlabelled: Introduction y objectives: Tako-tsubo syndrome (TTS) is a cardiac condition that mimics acute coronary syndrome, characterized by transient left ventricular dysfunction in the absence of culprit coronary artery stenosis. Although its etiology remains unknown, reversible microvascular dysfunction secondary to an adrenergic surge is thought to play a role. Treatment is empirical, although most patients receive beta-blockers (BB) in clinical practice.

More Than the Sum of Its Parts: Disrupted Core Periphery of Multiplex Brain Networks in Multiple Sclerosis.

Hum Brain Mapp

January 2025

Queen Square Multiple Sclerosis Centre, Department of Neuroinflammation, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London, London, UK.

Disruptions to brain networks, measured using structural (sMRI), diffusion (dMRI), or functional (fMRI) MRI, have been shown in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), highlighting the relevance of regions in the core of the connectome but yielding mixed results depending on the studied connectivity domain. Using a multilayer network approach, we integrated these three modalities to portray an enriched representation of the brain's core-periphery organization and explore its alterations in PwMS. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we selected PwMS and healthy controls with complete multimodal brain MRI acquisitions from 13 European centers within the MAGNIMS network.

Mathematical models of thrombin generation (TG) that have been developed are based on a systems biology approach. Although this approach provides important information about the coagulation system, its clinical applicability is limited by its complexity and number of input variables required. The aim of this study was to develop a semimechanistic model able to describe TG in trauma and control patients.

Objective: To analyse the interrater reliability of the NEUMOBACT checklist and verify whether consistent results are reproducible.

Methods: A validation study with a cross-sectional design, compliant with the GRRAS checklist, among ICU nurses attending a SIMULAZERO course with an Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation simulation format, to verify transfer from theory to clinical practice of knowledge and skills in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and catheter-related bacteraemia (CRB) prevention. A minimum sample size of 111 pairs of nurse raters was calculated.

Optimized GVHD Prevention in HLA-Mismatched Unrelated Allogeneic HCT Using a PTCY-Based Approach.

Eur J Haematol

December 2024

Hematopoietic Transplantation Unit, Hematology Department, Clinical Institute of Hematology and Oncology (ICMHO), Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Although post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCY)-based prophylaxis has become a widely adopted strategy for preventing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in 9 out of 10 HLA-mismatched unrelated donors (MMUDs), allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplants (allo-HCTs), data on the safety and efficacy of PTCY in this setting remain limited. This single-center study investigates the outcomes of 94 adults with hematological malignancies undergoing MMUD allo-HCT with PTCY and tacrolimus (Tac) (PTCY-Tac) between 2014 and 2023. The median age was 53 years, and 60.

December 2024

Formerly Gastroenterology Department, Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Hepáticas y Digestivas, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Current therapies for complex Crohn's perianal fistulas (CPF) have a limited ability to achieve long-term healing. Darvadstrocel (DVS) is an expanded allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy that has demonstrated efficacy in treating complex CPF in clinical trials. There are, however, limited long-term comparative data with standard of care (SoC).

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy complication characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, endothelial dysfunction, and complement dysregulation. Placenta-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), necessary in maternal-fetal communication, might contribute to PE pathogenesis. Moreover, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a pathogenic role in other complement-mediated pathologies, and their contribution in PE remains unexplored.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system. Structures affected in MS include the corpus callosum, connecting the hemispheres. Studies have shown that in mammalian brains, structural connectivity is organized according to a conservation principle, an inverse relationship between intra- and interhemispheric connectivity.

Purpose: This study evaluates the Social Return on Investment (SROI) of implementing measures to prevent fragility fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (OP) in Spain.

Methods: A group of 13 stakeholders identified necessary actions for improving refracture prevention and assessed the investment required from the Spanish National Health System (SNHS), considering direct, indirect, and intangible costs over a one-year period. Unitary costs were sourced from scientific literature and official data, and intangible costs were estimated through surveys on women's willingness to pay for better health-related quality of life.

Electronic address:

Women are known to have twice as much lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as men do. It has been reported that the risk genotype (CC) of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs2267735) in the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP-PAC1R) system is associated with PTSD risk and altered fear conditioning and fear extinction in women. Surprisingly, no previous work has studied the effect of this SNP on fear conditioning, extinction, or generalization in non-traumatized/low trauma load women.

Schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar (BD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are severe psychiatric disorders that are challenging to treat, often leading to treatment resistance (TR). It is crucial to develop effective methods to identify and treat patients at risk of TR at an early stage in a personalized manner, considering their biological basis, their clinical and psychosocial characteristics. Effective translation of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice is essential for achieving this goal.
