Introduction: Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) represents one of the newest non-invasive in vivo skin imaging techniques. Previous studies described morphologic criteria of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) under LC-OCT examination. Preliminary data on LC-OCT diagnostic performance for BCC have recently been published but showed only a modest improvement compared to dermoscopy, possibly due to study limitations.

Objetives: Patients with digitalis intoxication (DI) and hyperkalaemia are frequently encountered in the emergency department (ED). This alteration may require intravenous (iv) calcium, but its administration has been considered to increase cardiotoxicity and mortality in patients with DI. We studied the effect of iv calcium on mortality and 30-day readmission in patients with hyperkalaemia and DI.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with a significant percentage of germline pathogenic variants (GPVs). Unlike in the United States, routine universal genetic testing is not performed in Europe. The aim of the study is to evaluate the diagnostic yield of germline genetic testing in all patients with PDAC.

Background: Migrants are disproportionately affected by several infectious diseases differing the risk within migrant groups. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of six chronic infections in asymptomatic migrants attended at primary care or specialized units where health assessments are offered.
Methods: A multicentric cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C virus, spp, and infections in the migrant population who participated in a screening programme implemented at six primary health care centres, and two infectious diseases outpatient clinics in Catalonia, Spain.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with translocation t(8;16)(p11;p13) represents a rare entity that has been categorized as a disease-defining recurring cytogenetic abnormality with adverse risk in the 2022 European LeukemiaNet classification. This rating was mainly based on a retrospective analysis comprising patients from several large clinical trials, which, however, included only 21 patients treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT). Therefore, the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation performed a registry study on a larger cohort to evaluate the role of alloSCT in t(8;16) AML.

Awareness of nutrition's role in chronic diseases is rising, demanding guidance on the diet-disease relationship. Nutritional practices become crucial for prevention, prompting healthcare professionals (HCP) to respond. The present study assessed a Culinary Medicine (CM) program's impact on HCP's Mediterranean diet adherence, food and diet therapy knowledge, food management skills, culinary proficiency, and counseling confidence.

Background: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is rare in adolescents and young adults (AYA, 15-39 years at cancer diagnosis) and studies on CM in AYAs are scarce. Our aim is to update CM incidence and survival in European AYAs and to compare incidence and survival both with other age groups and over time.
Methods: We used the EUROCARE-6 database (108 cancer registries; 29 EU countries), calculating incidence rates (IR) per 100,000 individuals/year in the European population (years of diagnosis: 2006-2013), 5-year relative survival (RS), and 5-year RS conditional to surviving the first year after diagnosis, for the follow-up period 2010-2014 (cases diagnosed in 2006-2013).

Background & Aims: Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) has been shown to adequately predict outcomes in patients with liver disease. However, the value of LSM as a predictor of disease progression in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) remains to be determined. This study aimed to evaluate the role of LSM as a predictor of disease progression and decompensation of cirrhosis in patients with AIH.

Early liver transplantation for severe alcohol-associated hepatitis represents a transformative therapeutic approach that can significantly improve survival and achieves standard survival after LT compared to other indications. Early evaluation and an adequate selection of candidates, including organic and psychosocial criteria, are essential. Multidisciplinary management, including the addiction team for the treatment of alcohol use disorder, decreases the risk of alcohol relapse after liver transplantation and is associated with improved outcomes.

Primary cutaneous lymphomas (PCL) are a heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas arising from malignant T (CTCL) or B (CBCL) cells, often mimicking other skin conditions. Recently, non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities, including dermoscopy, Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM), and Line-field Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT), have become increasingly important, supporting clinicians in clinical practice. Hence, our study aimed to describe dermoscopic, RCM, and LC-OCT features of PCL and to explore their role in PCL management.

Gestational breast cancer (GBC), defined as breast cancer (BC) diagnosed during pregnancy or the first-year post-partum, accounts for 6-15% of BC cases in women aged 20-44 years. GBC has worse prognosis than non-GBC, but reasons behind are not clear. The GEICAM/2012-03 Study (Molecular Characterization of Gestational Breast Cancer) is a multicenter prospective/retrospective observational registry of patients diagnosed with GBC.

Arterial hypertension is one of the most prevalent diseases in the field of geriatrics and is also a risk factor for pathologies that frequently result in hospital admissions, such as heart failure and stroke. This article addresses both pharmacological and non-pharmacological diagnosis and treatment strategies, focusing on the role of frailty as a guiding principle in determining the most appropriate course of treatment, emphasizing patient-centred prescribing. Furthermore, the article reviews other frequent topics, such as polypharmacy and orthostatic hypotension.

Introduction: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is an immune-mediated, inflammatory, multisystemic disease that is considered a form of ANCA-associated vasculitis and whose association with asthma and blood and tissue eosinophilia differentiate it from other types of vasculitis. Nevertheless, diagnosis of EGPA may be difficult or delayed not only because of the rarity of the disease, but also because other diseases can present with similar manifestations.
Areas Covered: We review a series of key areas in EGPA, namely, laboratory and clinical indicators of disease, diagnosis, role of biomarkers, induction and maintenance therapy, and use of traditional and novel drugs.

The Wilson disease (WD) research field is rapidly evolving, and new diagnostic and therapeutical approaches are expected to be change-gamers in the disease for the incoming years, after decades of slow changing options. Non-ceruloplasmin-bound copper assays for circulating bioavailable copper are being tested for use in monitoring therapy and may also help in the diagnosis of new cases of WD. Other diagnostic advances include the use of quantitative detection of ATP7B peptides in dried blood spots, a method that is being tested for use in the newborn screening for WD, and the use of metallothionein immunostaining of liver biopsy specimens to differentiate WD from other liver diseases.

Background And Objectives: Disentangling brain aging from disease-related neurodegeneration in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) is increasingly topical. The brain-age paradigm offers a window into this problem but may miss disease-specific effects. In this study, we investigated whether a disease-specific model might complement the brain-age gap (BAG) by capturing aspects unique to MS.
