Kidney Biopsy Findings After Lung Transplantation.

Kidney Int Rep

September 2024

Nephrology and Transplantation Department, Bicêtre Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Université de Paris Saclay, Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Early diagnosis of kidney damage after lung transplantation is crucial due to its negative impact on patient prognosis.
  • A study analyzed 100 kidney biopsies from lung transplant patients, finding that chronic renal dysfunction was the main reason for biopsy, revealing a variety of chronic kidney lesions.
  • Key factors linked to the risk of progressing to end-stage renal disease included postoperative dialysis, high levels of proteinuria, and significant glomerulosclerosis, highlighting the need for timely nephrologist referrals.

Virtual surgical planning in orthognathic surgery: A prospective evaluation of postoperative accuracy.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

September 2024

Maxillo-Facial Surgery Unit, Head and Neck Department, University-Hospital of Parma, Gramsci Road 14, 42126, Parma, Italy.

Objectives: The development of 3D computer-assisted technologies over the past years has led to vast improvements in orthognathic surgery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate differences in maxillary position between 3D virtual surgical planning (VSP) and surgical results.

Materials And Methods: We assessed data from 25 patients who underwent bimaxillary non-segmented orthognathic surgery with 3D VSP.

Service de Chirurgie Maxillo-Faciale et Stomatologie, CHU Nantes, Nantes Université, Nantes F-44000, France; UnivAngers, INSERM, CNRS, CHU Nantes, Nantes Université, CRCI2NA, Nantes F-44000, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: We hypothesize that the removal of mandibular third molars (M3) 6 months prior to a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) could allow the displacement of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in a favorable lingual position. This study aimed to radiographically compare the position of IAN before and after M3 removal in patients with Class II malocclusion.

Materials And Method: The CBCT images of 30 randomly selected patients (mean age 15.

Outpatient orthognathic surgery: a prospective study of predictive factors for the length of hospital stays.

Clin Oral Investig

November 2023

Plastic and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department, CHU Purpan, University Hospital Center of Toulouse, Place du Docteur Baylac, 31059, Toulouse Cedex, France.

Objectives: Transitioning from non-outpatient orthognathic surgery to outpatient surgery is a new challenge, and it is essential to target the eligible population as precisely as possible. Several authors describe series of outpatient orthognathic surgery but do not include the reasons for their success or failure. The main aim of this study was to identify the factors significantly associated with "successful" outpatient orthognathic treatment.

Our study aimed to compare the biomechanical behaviour of mandibles with or without titanium miniplates when subjected to an impact after bone healing using a finite element model (FEM) of the human mandible. We simulated mandibular trauma on an FEM of a human mandible carrying or not two parasymphyseal miniplates and applying a concentrated force of 2000 N to four different areas, including the insertion area, the area straddling the edge of the miniplates and the adjacent bone, at a distance from the miniplates on the symphysis, and on the basilar border of the mandible below the miniplates. Then, we compared the Von Mises stress distributions between the two models.

Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, Stomatology and Oral Surgery, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon-Sud Hospital - Claude-Bernard Lyon 1 University, 165 Chemin du Grand-Revoyet, Pierre-Bénite 69310, France.

Medical photography is an essential tool in orthognathic surgery to facilitate diagnosis, preoperative planning, and follow-up. Photographic documentation has clinical, research, teaching and legal applications. An accurate diagnostic approach and surgical planning of dentofacial deformity requires the ability to work with reproducible and measurable photographic images.

University Institute of the Face and Neck, Côte d'Azur University, Nice University Hospital, 31 Avenue de Valombrose, Nice 06100, France; Saint George Aesthetic Clinic, 2 Avenue de Rimiez, Nice 06105, France.

Gummy smile has traditionally been treated with invasive or demanding surgical and orthodontic techniques. Several studies have shown that targeted injection of the upper lip elevator muscles with botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for this condition. However, no standardized injection protocol with reproducible results has yet been published.

Artificial intelligence for oral and maxillo-facial surgery: A narrative review.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

June 2022

Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, Stomatology and Oral Surgery, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon-Sud Hospital - Claude-Bernard Lyon 1 University, 165 Chemin du Grand-Revoyet, Pierre-Bénite 69310, France.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that simulate human cognition in order to address a specific problem. The improvement in computing speed, the exponential production and the routine collection of data have led to the rapid development of AI in the health sector. In this review, we propose to provide surgeons with the essential technical elements to help them understand the possibilities offered by AI and to review the current applications of AI for oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS).

Sleep disturbances in early clinical stages of psychotic and bipolar disorders: A meta-analysis.

Aust N Z J Psychiatry

September 2022

Université de Paris, Psychiatry and Addictology Department, AP-HP, GHU Paris Nord, DMU Neurosciences, Bichat Hospital - Claude Bernard, GHU Paris - Psychiatry & Neurosciences, Paris, France.

Objective: To provide a qualitative view and quantitative measure of sleep disturbances across and between early stages - clinical ultra high-risk and first episode - of psychotic and bipolar disorders.

Methods: Electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, PsychINFO) were searched up to March 2021 for studies comparing sleep measures between individuals with an early stage and controls. Standard mean deviations (Cohen's effect sizes) were calculated for all comparisons and pooled with random-effects models.

Aims: We aimed to provide contemporary real-world data on wearable cardioverter-defibrillator (WCD) use, not only in terms of effectiveness and safety but also compliance and acceptability.

Methods And Results: Across 88 French centres, the WEARIT-France study enrolled retrospectively patients who used the WCD between May 2014 and December 2016, and prospectively all patients equipped for WCD therapy between January 2017 and March 2018. All patients received systematic education session through a standardized programme across France at the time of initiation of WCD therapy and were systematically enrolled in the LifeVest Network remote services.

Background: Previous studies have suggested the role of microcalcifications in plaque vulnerability. This exploratory study sought to assess the potential of hybrid positron-emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using F-sodium fluoride (F-NaF) to check simultaneously F-NaF uptake, a marker of microcalcifications, and morphological criteria of vulnerability.

Methods And Results: We included 12 patients with either recently symptomatic or asymptomatic carotid stenosis.

The results of a study on onychomycosis in AIDS related complex and AIDS patients presenting for dermatology consultation at an infectious diseases department are reported. The clinical results showed that most patients presented a proximal white superficial onychomycosis. The association with a clinical interdigital involvement was rare, but the association with a mycotic plantar keratoderma was more frequent.
