Background: Inflammatory markers play a pivotal role in schizophrenia, as they provide insight into the neuroinflammatory processes occurring in the context of the disorder. Elevated levels of these markers, particularly C-reactive protein (CRP), can indicate an underlying immune system dysregulation, potentially influencing symptom severity and progression. Recognizing these markers has led to investigate the use of probiotics as an adjuvant to improve the treatment of schizophrenia.

Background: Cariprazine (CAR), an antipsychotic with partial agonism at the D3 receptor and higher affinity than dopamine, has shown significant procognitive effects in preclinical animal studies. This study systematically reviews CAR's effects on cognitive measures in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Methods: Two independent reviewers systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library up to May 2024, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines.

Background: Patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) and established cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at high risk of recurrent CV events. We analysed the use of the CNIC-polypill (acetylsalicylic acid, ramipril, and atorvastatin) compared with other therapeutic strategies in patients with T2DM and CVD from the retrospective NEPTUNO study.
Methods: Patients were stratified into four therapeutic approaches: CNIC-polypill, its monocomponents as loose medications, equipotent medications, and other therapies.

Introduction: Several biomarkers are characteristically elevated in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Our hypothesis was they could predict early changes in left ventricular (LV) characteristics in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. The objective of this study was two-fold: a) compare circulating concentrations of NT-pro BNP, CA-125, ST2, galectin-3 and pro-adrenomedullin among 4 groups of individuals (healthy controls; patients with ACS without AHF; patients with ACS and AHF and patients admitted for AHF); and b) evaluate whether these biomarkers predict adverse LV remodeling and ejection fraction changes in ACS.

Introduction And Aims: Fabry disease (FD) causes glycosphingolipid accumulation in the vascular endothelium, with predominantly cardiac and renal involvement. Its prevalence in patients with concomitant involvement of these two organs is unknown. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of FD in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and any degree of chronic kidney disease.

Background: Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of heart failure (HF), and tools are needed to identify patients with a higher probability of developing HF after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Artificial intelligence (AI) has proven to be useful in identifying variables related to the development of cardiovascular complications.
Methods: We included all consecutive patients discharged after ACS in two Spanish centers between 2006 and 2017.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations that occur in adults and children, with differences in distribution and presentation. We present the case of a newborn who initiated respiratory distress from the first minutes of life, presenting with hypoventilation and rightward displacement of the cardiac impulse, requiring oxygen therapy and intubation. The first radiograph shows a left pulmonary emphysema.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are becoming more frequent throughout the world. Adherence to both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, as well as lifestyles, is important for good management and control of the disease. This study aims to explore the opinions and perceptions of patients with ischemic heart disease on the difficulties associated with therapeutic adherence.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic progressive autoimmune inflammatory disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The course of the disease can be modified if diagnosis is early and treatment appropriate.
Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate a new strategy for early identification of RA patients in primary care settings (the 'diagnostic bottleneck') based on serological biomarkers and to manage inappropriate rheumatoid factor (RF) laboratory test requests.

Here, we report a case of a 51-year-old man recently diagnosed with unresectable cholangiocarcinoma, admitted to the hospital for malignant obstructive jaundice. After interventional management of biliary obstruction, the patient developed a significant right pleural effusion compatible with biliothorax, successfully managed with pleural drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of death, associated with substantial morbidity in the absence of treatment. Our aim was, first, to compare the diagnostic performance of D-dimer for the diagnosis of VTE in the emergency department (ED), when reporting conventional cut-off point versus when additionally reporting age-adjusted values. Second, we explored the ordering pattern of Doppler ultrasound (US) and computerized tomographic pulmonary angiogram (CTPA), before and after reporting of the aforementioned age-adjusted cut-off value.

Background: Statins are the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) for reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) levels and high percentage of patients require LLT combinations or alternative treatments for adequate LDLc control.
Methods: We performed an intention-to-treat meta-analysis of published data of phase III trials evaluating LLT efficacy on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). The primary endpoint was MACE incidence, as reported in each trial, and secondary analyses included myocardial infarction, stroke and mortality.
