Introduction: The role of Laboratory Medicine in patient care has evolved in the last decades. The same has occurred to the laboratory model, which has evolved from a traditional model where the laboratory is merely involved in clinical decision-making to a leading model where the laboratory is not only involved but also determines decision-making. The advent of new technologies and automation of processes have enabled laboratory professionals to focus on the first and last phase of the analytical process namely, test ordering and decision-making based on laboratory results.

Objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common infections within the Emergency Department (ED), causing increased laboratory workloads and unnecessary antibiotics prescriptions. The aim of this study was to improve UTI diagnostics in clinical practice by application of machine learning (ML) models for real-time UTI prediction.
Methods: In a retrospective study, patient information and outcomes from Emergency Department patients, with positive and negative culture results, were used to design models - 'Random Forest' and 'Neural Network' - for the prediction of UTIs.

Bariatric surgery (BS) has been shown to be effective and efficient, but only 1% of selected patients will ever receive it. Compared to medical treatment of obesity, BS has demonstrated greater long-term sustained weight loss, a reduction in both total and cardiovascular (CV) mortality, improvement or remission of CV risk factors and other comorbidities associated with obesity, as well as improved mobility and quality of life. BS presents similar risks to other abdominal surgeries, with obesity as an added risk factor.

Introduction: Several barriers to optimal care in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) exist, which is detrimental to patient outcomes. The Rheumacensus programme aimed to identify how the standard of care (SoC) and treatment ambition for patients with axSpA could be elevated, from the unique perspective of three key stakeholders from across Europe: patients, healthcare professionals (HCPs) and payors.
Methods: Rheumacensus followed three phases: an insights-gathering workshop to identify current unmet needs in axSpA and an area of focus, a modified Delphi process to gain consensus on improvements within the agreed area of focus, and a Consensus Council (CC) meeting to generate 'Calls to Action' (CTA) to highlight the changes needed to elevate the SoC for patients with axSpA.

Background: This study aimed to validate the role of the D-dimer to lymphocyte ratio (DLR) for mortality prediction in a large national cohort of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.
Methods: A retrospective, multicenter, observational study that included hospitalized patients due to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Spain was conducted from March 2020 to March 2022. All biomarkers and laboratory indices analyzed were measured once at admission.
Objective: Readmission for COVID-19 is associated with high mortality, saturation of health services, and high costs. This study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of readmissions in COVID-19 patients in a regional hospital of Spain from February 2020 to March 2021.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study describing the characteristics of adult patients readmitted within thirty days of discharge after being infected with SARS-CoV-2 was carried out.
