Hypertension is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of hypertension in children has risen in last years, secondary to the increase in overweight and obesity in pediatric population, among other factors. An adequate diagnosis and opportune treatment can prevent the development of organ damage.

Aim: To quantify the impact of prematurity on chromatic discrimination throughout childhood, from 2 to 15 years of age.

Methods: We recruited two cohorts of children, as part of the TrackAI Project, an international project with seven different study sites: a control group of full-term children with normal visual development and a group of children born prematurely. All children underwent a complete ophthalmological exam and an assessment of colour discrimination along the three colour axes: deutan, protan and trytan using a DIVE device with eye tracking technology.

The Duffy protein, a transmembrane molecule, acts as a receptor for various chemokines and facilitates binding between reticulocytes and the Duffy antigen binding protein. Duffy expression is associated with the Duffy chemokine receptor antigen genotype on chromosome 1 and exhibits variation across different geographic regions. Traditionally, the Duffy negative genotype and phenotype have been described to confer a certain level of protection against infection and symptom development.

Background: Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disorder in which patients frequently develop ocular manifestations that precede systemic involvement, sometimes it even presents as an ocular isolated form of the disease. The purpose of this study is to report the ocular and systemic manifestations of sarcoidosis in a series of Mexican patients, as there is a low incidence of the disease in this population.

Methods: A retrospective case series of patients with positive classification criteria for sarcoidosis who attended Asociacion Para Evitar la Ceguera en Mexico, IAP between 2011 and 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a growing field in developing countries, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), but research and information are limited, making it challenging to apply findings across diverse populations.
  • The study reviewed PGx knowledge among the LAC scientific community, identified barriers to its clinical use, and surveyed 106 professionals to evaluate these obstacles, revealing that the primary barrier is the lack of guidelines for implementing PGx in practice.
  • Despite these challenges, LAC has contributed 3.44% of global PGx publications and identified gene/drug pairs, such as tamoxifen and clopidogrel, as significant for improving genomic medicine responses, although cost-effectiveness concerns remain a critical issue.

Assessment and Management of Atraumatic First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Pain.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

July 2023

From the Universidad de los Andes, facultad de medicina, Santiago, Chile (Drago), Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Hospital Félix Bulnes, Santiago, Chile (Drago), Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Kelowna, BC (Nazaroff, Britton, and Veljkovic), Footbridge clinic, Vancouver, BC (Veljkovic).

Nontraumatic pain in the first metatarsophalangeal joint is frequent and can be debilitating. The metatarsophalangeal joint complex comprises four articulating surfaces including the first metatarsal, the proximal phalanx, and tibial and fibular sesamoids, which are all contained within a synovial capsule. The most common causes of pain are hallux valgus and hallux rigidus.

Article Synopsis
  • Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT), caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, is the leading cause of posterior uveitis globally, which can lead to visual impairment and blindness.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 72 studies identified various factors influencing recurrences and visual impairment in OT patients, focusing on clinical, environmental, parasite, host, and treatment-related factors.
  • The analysis included 4,200 patients, revealing a recurrence rate of 49%, notably higher in South America compared to Europe.

In this paper, we compare the post-operative macular microvascular parameters (vascular density and foveal avascular zone) in eyes with refractory macular hole (MH) that underwent pars plana vitrectomy and autologous retinal transplant (ART) with the fellow unoperated eye. We conducted a retrospective case control study of six consecutive patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and ART with at least six months of post-operative follow-up. Pre-operatively, all eyes underwent SD-OCT (Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography) examination.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness. Not only do the epidemiologic determinants and distributions of patients with ROP vary worldwide, but clinical differences have also been described. The Third Edition of the International Classification of ROP (ICROP3) acknowledges that aggressive ROP (AROP) can occur in larger preterm infants and involve areas of the more anterior retina, particularly in low-resource settings with unmonitored oxygen supplementation.

Introduction: Despite a growing body of research on the risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy, there is continued controversy given heterogeneity in the quality and design of published studies.

Methods: We screened ongoing studies in our sequential, prospective meta-analysis. We pooled individual participant data to estimate the absolute and relative risk (RR) of adverse outcomes among pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection, compared with confirmed negative pregnancies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how fixational behavior develops in healthy children aged 5 months and older, using advanced eye-tracking technology to analyze their oculomotor behavior.
  • A large sample of 802 children was examined, with results indicating that visual performance, including gaze stability and saccadic reaction time, improves significantly with age, especially in the first two years of life.
  • The findings provide valuable normative data for clinical practices, enabling better assessment of visual fixation and saccadic performance in young children.

MET Signaling Pathways, Resistance Mechanisms, and Opportunities for Target Therapies.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2022

Centro de Genética y Genómica, Instituto de Ciencias e Innovación en Medicina, Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago 7550000, Chile.

The gene, known as proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase, was first identified to induce tumor cell migration, invasion, and proliferation/survival through canonical RAS-CDC42-PAK-Rho kinase, RAS-MAPK, PI3K-AKT-mTOR, and β-catenin signaling pathways, and its driver mutations, such as gene amplification (amp) and the exon 14 skipping alterations (ex14), activate cell transformation, cancer progression, and worse patient prognosis, principally in lung cancer through the overactivation of their own oncogenic and MET parallel signaling pathways. Because of this, driver alterations have become of interest in lung adenocarcinomas since the FDA approval of target therapies for amp and ex14 in 2020. However, after using MET target therapies, tumor cells develop adaptative changes, favoring tumor resistance to drugs, the main current challenge to precision medicine.
