Genetics in Reproductive Medicine.

Thanks to advances in technology, genetic testing is now available to explore the causes of infertility and to assess the risk of a given couple passing on a genetic disorder to their offspring. This allows at-risk couples to make an informed decision when opting for assisted reproduction and allows professionals to offer pre-implantation diagnosis when appropriate. Genetic screening of an infertile couple has thus become standard practice for an appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and prognostic assessment.

Introduction And Objectives: We report the results of the 2023 Spanish catheter ablation registry.

Methods: Procedural data were collected and incorporated into the REDCap platform by all participating centers through a specific form.

Results: There were 104 participating centers in 2023 compared with 103 in 2022.

Mindfulness Practice Reduces Hair Cortisol, Anxiety and Perceived Stress in University Workers: Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Anxiety and stress are common mental health conditions reported by university workers. Practices of mindfulness represent one promising approach as an effective and feasible means to reduce stress, improve mental health and promote well-being; however, there are no clinical trials that have combined long-term stress biomarkers (hair cortisol) and psychometric assessments in a sample of university workers.

Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based program on long-term stress, by measuring hair cortisol concentration and perceived stress and anxiety among workers who were undergoing high levels of stress.

Emergency department prediction model for 30-day mortality after hip fracture: the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) cohort.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to design and validate a predictive model for 30-day mortality in a cohort of patients from the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (RNFC) with variables collected at the Emergency Department.

Methods: Retrospective study of a prospective database of hip fracture patients ⩾75 years old between 1 January 2017 and 30 September 2019. Patient characteristics, type of fracture and osteoprotective medication were collected at the Emergency Department.

Expert design thinking workshops to analyze users' perceived applicability of NUTRI-ONCOCARE algorithm to prevent and treat malnutrition in cancer patients under routine clinical practice conditions in Spain: the ALLIANCE study.

Purpose: NUTRI-ONCOCARE algorithm has been developed to identify and treat patients with solid tumors who are at risk of malnutrition. The present study is aimed at analyzing users' opinion about this new tool and at assessing whether it is perceived as useful to achieve the behavioral change required for a successful integration of nutritional assessment into routine cancer care.

Self-Healing Juvenile Cutaneous Mucinosis: A Report of Two Cases With Differing Evolution.

Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis is a rare entity, characterized by the presence of subcutaneous nodules together with frequent nonspecific systemic symptoms, which occurs in the pediatric age and characteristically resolves spontaneously. Although the diagnostic criteria do not require a biopsy to be performed, it is frequently performed, and an abundant dermal mucin deposition will be observed together with other features such as fibroblastic proliferation. Although the prognosis is benign, follow-up is required for the eventual development of a rheumatologic disease.

Bleb geometry and morphology after Preserflo Microshunt surgery: Risk factors for surgical failure.

Purpose: To investigate the possible risk factors for treatment failure in patients who had undergone Preserflo Microshunt (PMS) implantation, using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) to analyze the internal structures of the bleb.

Methods: The PMS blebs of 54 patients were evaluated with AS-OCT. A mathematical model was used to calculate the total filtering surface of the episcleral fluid cavity (EFC) and the hydraulic conductivity (HC) of the bleb wall.

Bile reflux and marginal ulcers after one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). A narrative review.

One-anastomosis gastric bypass has now become the third most commonly performed bariatric technique worldwide. However, as a consequence of the configuration of this surgery, it can present some chronic complications (anastomotic mouth ulcers and biliary reflux) that physicians must come to better understand and assess. In this narrative review, we aimed to update our knowledge of both the diagnosis and treatment of these two complications in the context of bariatric surgeries.

Identifying the Enablers and Barriers to Advance Nurse Prescribing of Medication in Spain According to Experts' Views: A Delphi Study.

Nurses play an important role in pharmaceutical care worldwide in detecting clinical changes, communicating and discussing pharmacotherapy with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals, proposing and implementing drug-related interventions, and ensuring the monitoring of patients and their medication regimens, among others. However, there is no global consensus across countries regarding the prescribing of medication by nurses. In Spain, for example, this topic is currently in transition since the approval of the Royal Decree 1302/2018 of October 22nd, which regulates the indication, use, and authorization for dispensing human-use medication by nurses.

Supplementation of culture medium with quercetin improves mouse blastocyst quality and increases the expression of HIF-1α protein.

Regarding the low number of embryos that reach the blastocyst stage when cultured , this study aimed to evaluate the effects of quercetin on pre-implantation mouse () embryos obtained using fertilization, especially during the passage from morula to blastocyst. Furthermore, we studied whether quercetin also affected the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). The culture medium for the embryos was supplemented with quercetin, for long or short periods of time, and then the development potential, total cell number, apoptosis rates and expression of HIF-1α were studied to determine the effect of quercetin.

Material And Method: A retrospective review of the minimum basic data set from 1998 to 2018 was carried out. Temporal evolution was analysed and the variables associated with the indication (age, sex, regions) were identified.

Effect of the addition of 4OHE and quercetin in culture media on ROS levels and gene expression in mouse blastocysts.

Aims: The main objective of this work is to elucidate whether Quercetin (Qc) and 4-Hidroxistradiol (4OHE2 ) decrease the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in in vitro obtained embryos and to analyse which genes are activated under the treatments that could explain this improvement.

Methods: Oxidative stress was induced during embryo culture by H2 O2 treatment and ROS production was measured and compared with embryos treated with Qc or 4OHE2 . Gene expression was analysed by Q-PCR in control embryos obtained in utero (IU) or by IVF and compared with the levels found in embryos cultured with Qc or 4OHE2 to determine the effect of these compounds.

Medical nutrition therapy is a very useful tool in maintaining and recovering the health of patients with disease-related malnutrition, although its implementation can be complex and is not without risks. Quality processes are understood as sets of activities that are related or interact to transform input elements into results. From the SENPE Management Work Group we present the process of medical nutrition therapy (PMNT), which aims to facilitate the management of clinical nutrition of a multidisciplinary nutrition support team in a hospital setting.

Efficacy and Safety of the Preserflo Microshunt With Mitomycin C for the Treatment of Open Angle Glaucoma.

Prcis: The Preserflo Microshunt (PSM) is a safe and effective glaucoma microfiltering implant that significantly reduces the intraocular pressure (IOP), either alone or in combination with phacoemulsification, during the first year after surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of the PSM for the treatment of open angle glaucoma with 0.2 mg/mL mitomycin C, either alone or in combination with cataract surgery.

This article gives an overview of quality management in clinical nutrition and hospital feeding. Likewise, keys and critical points to be taken into account in all the processes and threads that are carried out during specialized nutritional support and alimentation of patients are analyzed.

Designing Dementia Care Pathways to Transform Non Dementia-Friendly Hospitals: Scoping Review.

People with dementia (PwD) occupy around 25% of the hospital beds. Once PwD are admitted to hospitals, their cognitive impairment is not considered in most of the cases. Thus, it causes an impact on the development of the disease becoming a stressful situation as care plans are not adapted to PwD.

Introduction: Healthcare pressure has changed the acquisition of knowledge during residency training. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and research training, and level of satisfaction, during orthopedic and traumatology residency in different hospitals of the Spanish National Health Service.

Developing a dementia inclusive hospital environment using an Integrated Care Pathway design: research protocol.

People with dementia occupy 25% of the hospital beds. When they are admitted to hospitals their cognitive impairment is not considered in most of the cases. Some European and North American countries already have experience of implementing national plans about Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

The case of 'A Rhino Horn': case report and proposal for modification to the Hetsroni and Kelly classification.

Subspine impingement syndrome by definition involves a prominent antero-inferior iliac spine (AIIS) which can lead to impingement on the femoral neck thereby causing symptoms. We present the case of a 22-year-old semi-professional athlete who presented with a Type III AIIS morphology leading to subspine impingement syndrome and was managed via a mini open anterior approach. Radiological examination revealed a fairly prominent left AIIS resembling the 'horn of a rhino' extending to the trochanteric region anteriorly.

Epidemiology and prognosis of patients with a history of cancer admitted to intensive care. A multicenter observational study.

Objective: To assess the epidemiology and outcome at discharge of cancer patients requiring admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Design: A descriptive observational study was made of data from the ENVIN-HELICS registry, combined with specifically compiled variables. Comparisons were made between patients with and without neoplastic disease, and groups of cancer patients with a poorer outcome were identified.

NUTRI-ONCOCARE: New integral nutrition care model to prevent and treat malnutrition in cancer patients.

Objective: The maximum expression of malnutrition in cancer patients is  cancerous cachexia, always linked to an unfavorable prognosis. Given its  evolutionary nature it is recommended to detect and act early in those patients with nutritional risk. The objective is to propose an action  algorithm for the nutritional approach of patients with solid tumors.

Background: Obesity surgery is justified as it produces sustained weight loss, increases life expectancy, and reduces the complications of obesity. For this reason, increasing numbers of patients are undergoing this surgery [1]. Complications following surgical treatment of severe obesity vary based upon the procedure performed and, although it is currently below 7% in more experienced centers, it may increase in more complex surgeries (such as revision surgery) and can be as high as 40% [2, 3].
