Background: Electrocardiographic (ECG)-based criteria are used to confirm left bundle branch (LBB) pacing (LBBP), but current cutoff values have never been validated for different pacing locations.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe diagnostic performance of V6-R wave peak time (RWPT), V6-V1 interpeak interval, and aVL-RWPT for different pacing sites within the LBB and to determine 100% specific values for each criterion at each pacing location.

Methods: Consecutive patients with confirmed LBBP were selected.

Background & Aims: Malnutrition and sarcopenia may last beyond hospital discharge, especially in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU), having a negative impact on patient recovery and leading to disability, poor quality of life, and additional morbidity. No prior evidence is available for post-ICU management and follow-up of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and their long-term evolution. This study reports on the one-year-long evolution of a cohort of COVID-19 survivors after ICU discharge, in terms of nutritional and functional status as well as health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Approximately one-third of the waste biomass from the cultivation of guayule ( A. Gray) for natural rubber production is leaf tissue; however, whether it can be valorized is not known. Guayulins and argentatins are potential high-value products that can be recovered from guayule resin during rubber/latex processing.

Background: External ventricular drainage (EVD) is a common emergency neurosurgical procedure, but it is not free of adverse events. The aim of this study is to compare the complication rate of two frequently used EVD types, namely, tunneled antibiotic-impregnated catheters (Bactiseal) and bolt-connected non-coated devices (Camino).

Methods: All EVDs placed between 1 March 2015 and 31 December 2017 were registered.

Background: The role of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in the management glomerular/systemic autoimmune diseases with proteinuria in real-world clinical settings is unclear.

Methods: This is a retrospective, observational, international cohort study. Adult patients with biopsy-proven glomerular diseases were included.

We present the case of a 68-year-old female with no relevant medical history,   who is evaluated for weight loss. An initial blood test showed mild hypertransaminasemia with negative serologies, autoimmunity and tumoral markers. Abdominopelvic CT revealed multiple liver lesions with ring enhancement, compatible with metastasis, as well as suspicious subcarinal adenopathy.

Objectives: Communication regarding prognosis to patients with advanced cancer is fundamental for informed medical decision making. Our objective was to analyse (1) the proportion of subjects with advanced cancer who prefer to know their prognosis, (2) the characteristics associated with patients' preference for prognostic information, (3) the psychological factors that impact the preference to know prognosis and 4) the concordance between preference for prognostic information perceived among physicians and patients.

Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional design was adopted.

Effectiveness of flash glucose monitoring in patients with type 1 diabetes and recurrent hypoglycemia between early and late stages after flash glucose monitoring initiation.

J Diabetes Complications

August 2023

Diabetes Unit, Endocrinology and Nutrition Department, ICMDM, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Spain; IDIBAPS (Institut d'investigacions biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer), Barcelona, Spain; CIBERDEM (Centro de Investigación en Red de Diabetes y Enfermedades Metabólicas), Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of reimbursed flash glucose monitoring (FGM) with alarms in reducing severe hypoglycemia (SH) and improving quality of life among Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) patients.
  • Patients showed a significant decrease in SH events after one year, from 0.3 to 0.03 events on average, along with improved awareness of hypoglycemia.
  • Although there were no significant reductions in time spent below certain glucose levels, better initial glycemic control contributed to reduced hypoglycemia risks.

This letter explores the societal aspects and healthcare implications that underlie thinking about mpox (formerly known was monkeypox), in the 2022 outbreak, as a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The authors examine what underlies this question, exploring what is an STI, what is sex, and what is the role of stigma in sexual health promotion. The authors argue that, in this specific outbreak, mpox is an STI among men who have sex with men (MSM).

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in expanded hemodialysis (HDx), an emerging renal replacement therapy based on the use of medium cut-off membranes (MCO). Thanks to the internal architecture of these types of membranes, with a higher pore size and smaller fiber inner diameter to favor internal filtration rate, they can increase the removal of larger middle molecules in conventional hemodialysis. Secondarily, several reports suggest that this therapy potentially improve the outcomes for end-stage renal disease patients.

Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, E.T.S.I. Agronómica, de Montes y Biotecnología (ETSIAMB), Cátedra de Química Agrícola, Avda. de España S/n, Albacete, 02071, Spain. Electronic address:

There is considerable interest in the exploitation of compounds belonging to the triterpenoid family from guayule (Parthenium argentatum, A. Gray), as they offer several beneficial effects to human health. The most abundant triterpenoids in guayule resin are the argentatins, which are currently analyzed by labor-intensive and time-consuming techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how well Spanish physicians, divided by sex, accept the European Clinical Practice Guidelines on heart failure, using a survey distributed to healthcare professionals in Madrid.
  • A total of 387 physicians participated, with women being younger and having fewer years of clinical practice than their male counterparts, but both expressed a positive view on the guidelines and the feasibility of implementing quadruple therapy quickly.
  • Women demonstrated a stronger adherence to the new treatment paradigm of "4 pillars at lowest doses," showed more willingness to establish quadruple therapy before cardiac device implantation, and were more proactive in starting SGLT2 inhibitors compared to men, indicating potential sex-related differences in guideline compliance that warrant further investigation.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are gaining interest with the increased number of infected patients. NTM Elite agar is designed specifically for the isolation of NTM without the decontamination step. We assessed the clinical performance of this medium combined with Vitek mass spectrometry (MS) matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) technology for the isolation and identification of NTM in a prospective multicenter study, including 15 laboratories (24 hospitals).

Mortality rates for COVID-19 have declined over time in the general population, but data in patients with hematologic malignancies are contradictory. We identified independent prognostic factors for COVID-19 severity and survival in unvaccinated patients with hematologic malignancies, compared mortality rates over time and versus non-cancer inpatients, and investigated post COVID-19 condition. Data were analyzed from 1166 consecutive, eligible patients with hematologic malignancies from the population-based HEMATO-MADRID registry, Spain, with COVID-19 prior to vaccination roll-out, stratified into early (February-June 2020; = 769 (66%)) and later (July 2020-February 2021; = 397 (34%)) cohorts.

  • - Chagas disease (CD), caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects around 10-20% of patients with digestive issues, yet most research focuses on its effects on the heart, particularly in non-endemic countries.
  • - A study analyzed 1,216 medical records, finding that 57.76% of Chagas patients had digestive disorders, with a significant 40.73% also facing infectious disease comorbidities; specific esophageal and colonic abnormalities were noted in patients undergoing further tests.
  • - The research highlights the need for careful evaluation of digestive disorders in Chagas patients, emphasizing that both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals should be screened for structural damage and infectious diseases, such as
