Effect of dietary protein on serum hepcidin and iron in adults with obesity and insulin resistance: A randomized single blind clinical trial.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

November 2024

Departamento de Fisiología de la Nutrición, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ), Ciudad de México, Mexico. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Both obesity and iron deficiency are public health problems. The association between the two problems could be explained by chronic low-grade inflammation in obesity, which could stimulate hepcidin expression and modify iron concentration that the consumption of high-protein diets could prevent. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effects of high-protein diets with a predominance of animal or vegetable protein on serum hepcidin and iron concentrations in adults with obesity.

Long noncoding RNA MALAT1 in dermatologic disorders: a comprehensive review.

Biomark Med

October 2024

Departamento de Inmunología, Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chávez, Ciudad de México, C.P. 14080, México.

Dermatologic disorders, affecting the integumentary system, involve diverse molecular mechanisms such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation and immune responses. Long noncoding RNAs, particularly Metastasis-Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript 1 (MALAT1), are crucial regulators of gene expression. MALAT1 influences inflammatory responses, immune cell function and signaling pathways, impacting various physiological and pathological processes, including dermatologic disorders.

LncRNA MALAT1 in Keratinocyte function: A review of recent advances.

Noncoding RNA Res

June 2024

Doctorado en Ciencias Biológicas y de La Salud, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Ciudad de México, Mexico.

Keratinocytes, the principal epidermal cells, play a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity and functionality of the skin. Beyond their protective role, keratinocytes are key contributors to the process of wound healing, as they migrate to injury sites, proliferate, and generate new layers of epidermis, facilitating tissue repair and remodeling. Moreover, keratinocytes actively participate in the skin's immune responses, expressing pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to detect microbial components and interact with immune cells to influence adaptive immunity.

Article Synopsis
  • Brainstem tumors make up 10.9% of all brain tumors, with pediatric diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG) having a poor prognosis; this study focuses on children in Mexico from 2001 to 2021, analyzing clinical characteristics and prognostic factors for survival.
  • A total of 110 patients were included, with a median diagnosis age of 7 years; symptoms appeared within 6 months for over half the patients, and despite treatment, the overall survival rate at 4 years was only 11.4%.
  • The study emphasizes the need for improved healthcare strategies in Mexico and highlights challenges regarding the acceptance of palliative care among families and medical staff.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) comprises a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic cell neoplasms of myeloid lineage that arise from the clonal expansion of their precursors in the bone marrow, interfering with cell differentiation, leading to a syndrome of bone marrow failure. AML is a consequence of genetic and epigenetic changes (point mutations, gene rearrangements, deletions, amplifications, and arrangements in epigenetic changes that influence gene expression) in hematopoietic precursor cells, which create a clone of abnormal cells that are capable of proliferating but cannot differentiate into mature hematopoietic cells or undergo programmed cell death. The diagnosis requires more than 20% myeloid blasts in the bone marrow and certain cytogenic abnormalities.

Cell death induction by mycelium extracts from spp. on cervical cancer cell lines.

Nat Prod Res

December 2022

Centro de Investigación sobre Enfermedades Infecciosas, Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Mushrooms may have health benefits, specifically showing potential anti-cancer properties against cervical cancer cell lines HeLa and SiHa while being less effective on non-cancerous HaCaT cells.
  • Both mycelium extracts demonstrated similar protein patterns and had protease activity, leading to a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on cancer cells.
  • The cytotoxicity observed was primarily linked to autophagy rather than apoptosis, and the mechanisms did not involve changes in the protein expression of p53, indicating alternative pathways in inducing cell death.

Introduction: The sofosbuvir-velpatasvir (SOF/VEL) combination is a direct-acting antiviral therapy that is authorized and available in Mexico, making the performance of a real-world multicenter study that evaluates the sustained virologic response at 12 weeks post-treatment a relevant undertaking.

Methods: A retrospective review of the case records of 241 patients seen at 20 hospitals in Mexico was conducted to assess hepatitis C treatment with the SOF/VEL combination (n = 231) and the sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/ribavirin (SOF/VEL/RBV) combination (n = 10). The primary efficacy endpoint was the percentage of patients that achieved SVR at 12 weeks after the end of treatment.

Breast cancer (BRCA) is a serious public health problem, as it is the most frequent malignant tumor in women worldwide. BRCA is a molecularly heterogeneous disease, particularly at gene expression (mRNAs) level. Recent evidence shows that coding RNAs represent only 34% of the total transcriptome in a human cell.

There is a general perception that medical students should help in case of disaster situations or epidemiological contingencies; although, they may not have been properly educated to do so. In recent dates, the participation of students is important in staff training activities, triage, care of bureaucratic activities, volunteering; but they are not considered a first line of care at disaster sites or patient management. The perception of the participation of medical students in disasters and pandemics is reviewed in the literature and some of the needs for their training and teaching are established, so that they can truly become an option in times of crisis.

Medical specialties' teaching is an area of health systems that deserves special consideration in light of the lessons learned from influenza and COVID-19; educational programs and implementation of the training strategies that are used must be reevaluated, since the level of training of most specialty students does not allow to consider them as personnel who can face these global problems. The number of specialization courses has exponentially grown, and their main threat is the cancellation or partial execution of their academic programs as a consequence of not implementing functional operational strategies during a contingency.
