Population Pharmacokinetics and Dosing Recommendations of Levetiracetam in Adult and Elderly Patients With Epilepsy.

J Pharm Sci

June 2020

Laboratorio de Biofarmacia y Farmacocinética, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, México. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create and validate a pharmacokinetic model for levetiracetam, a medication used in epilepsy treatment, to help personalize dosing for both adult and elderly patients.
  • It involved analyzing 367 plasma samples from 107 patients and utilized sophisticated modeling techniques to assess the drug's behavior in the body, particularly considering factors like body surface area and kidney function.
  • The findings suggest that dosing should be tailored based on a patient's creatinine clearance, recommending specific doses like 1000 mg every 12 hours for moderate kidney function and adjusting upward for better clearance rates.

Population Pharmacokinetics of Amikacin Administered Once Daily in Patients with Different Renal Functions.

Antimicrob Agents Chemother

April 2020

Departamento de Farmacia y Tecnología de Medicamentos, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, Mexico

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 63 patients were monitored, and the research used a modeling technique to estimate how amikacin is cleared and distributed in the body, revealing that kidney function and ideal body weight significantly affect these parameters.
  • * The final model provided specific dosing recommendations and showed that there is a considerable variability in how different patients metabolize amikacin, indicating a need for tailored dosing especially for those with high kidney clearance rates.

Objective: The objective of the study was to describe the feasibility of single catheter intervention using the transradial approach for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Background: The transradial approach for PCIs has fewer vascular events and complications and lower mortality rate. However, complications can result from forearm artery tortuosity, a longer learning curve and artery spasm that can complicate, delay and impede coronary artery interventions.

Background: The ductus arteriosus is a necessary structure in fetal circulation, and its patency can produce hemodynamic alterations. The diagnostic gold standard is echocardiography, not always available. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), they have pulse oximetry that measures perfusion index (PI), which could be used as a diagnostic tool in hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (HSPDA).

Background: The safety and efficacy of antithrombotic regimens may differ between patients with atrial fibrillation who have acute coronary syndromes (ACS), treated medically or with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and those undergoing elective PCI.

Methods: Using a 2×2 factorial design, we compared apixaban with vitamin K antagonists and aspirin with placebo in patients with atrial fibrillation who had ACS or were undergoing PCI and were receiving a P2Y inhibitor. We explored bleeding, death and hospitalization, as well as death and ischemic events, by antithrombotic strategy in 3 prespecified subgroups: patients with ACS treated medically, patients with ACS treated with PCI, and those undergoing elective PCI.

Determination of Salivary Sialic Acid Through Nanotechnology: A Useful Biomarker for the Screening of Breast Cancer.

Arch Med Res

April 2019

Coordinación para la Innovación y Aplicación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (CIACYT), Universidad Autónoma de San Luís Potosí, San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Purpose: To demonstrate the usefulness of sialic acid (SA) in saliva as a biomarker for breast cancer (BC) and develop a new tool for early detection.

Methods: Considering that the amount of SA in human saliva is limited, the levels of SA were measured using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with tailored citrate-reduced silver nanoparticles. We calibrated the spectrum using analytical reagent SA.

[Treatment with bisphosphonates improves the quality of life in patients with diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta].

Acta Ortop Mex

November 2019

Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación «Dr. Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra». Ciudad de México. México.

Introduction: Osteogenesis imperfeta (OI) is defined as a heterogeneous group of hereditary diseases, which present with the presence of bone fragility, frequent fractures, bone deformities and short stature. Treatment with biphosfonates in patients with diagnosis of OI has shown a decrease in the frecuency of fractures, as well as an improvement in vertebral bone density. There is little evidence on quality of life in patients diagnosed with OI treated with bisphosphonates, Therefore this study evaluated the quality of life of patients diagnosed with OI after treatment with bisphosphonates.

Biomed Chromatogr

December 2019

Centro de Investigación Aplicada en Ambiente y Salud, CIACYT, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, S.L.P., Mexico.

An analytical method to identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the exhaled breath from patients with a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using a ultrafast gas chromatography system equipped with an electronic nose detector (FGC eNose) has been developed. A prospective study was performed in 23 COPD patients and 33 healthy volunteers; exhalation breathing tests were performed with Tedlar bags. Each sample was analyzed by FCG eNose and the identification of VOCs was based on the Kovats index.

DPP-4 Levels Are Increased in Subjects with Poor Sleep Quality.

Metab Syndr Relat Disord

October 2019

Laboratorio de Investigacion Traslacional en Farmacologia, Departamento de Epidemiologia Clinica, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi, SLP, Mexico.

Up to 30% of the population has sleep disturbances, generating a negative health impact, a situation that is often not known and no medical attention is sought. It has been observed that after a total deprivation of sleep, the levels of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) tend to increase. The aim of this study was to compare serum levels of DPP-4 in healthy subjects, with adequate and poor-quality sleep needing medical/pharmacological treatment.

Exosomes are defined as extracellular vesicles that are released from cells upon fusion of an intermediate endocytic compartment - the multivesicular body - with the plasma membrane. Recently, placenta-derived exosomes have gained special attention, since they play a crucial role in the communication between the mother and fetus. It is known that the concentration of placenta-derived exosomes in the maternal bloodstream is higher in patients with preeclampsia or gestational diabetes mellitus.

Stroke in Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease.

Stroke

June 2019

Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine (W.S.J., M.R.P.), Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC.

Background and Purpose- Predictors of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are poorly understood. The primary aims of this analysis were to (1) determine the incidence of ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke and TIA in patients with symptomatic PAD, (2) identify predictors of stroke in patients with PAD, and (3) compare the rate of stroke in ticagrelor- and clopidogrel-treated patients. Methods- EUCLID (Examining Use of Ticagrelor in Peripheral Artery Disease) randomized 13 885 patients with symptomatic PAD to receive monotherapy with ticagrelor or clopidogrel for the prevention of major adverse cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or ischemic stroke).
