The beneficial health of evaluating prebiotic effect by the consumption of fructans ( fructans) was assessed in the epithelium of the cecum and proximal colon of Wistar rats fed at different doses for 35 days with regards to mucus production, morphological cell changes, and the serum concentration of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Results showed a significant increase in mucus-secreting cells ( < 0.05) and a normal structure with preserved crypts, without morphological damage to colonic cells for a dose of 12.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most frequent pregnancy complications with potential adverse outcomes for mothers and newborns. Its effects on the newborn appear during the neonatal period or early childhood. Therefore, an early diagnosis is crucial to prevent the development of chronic diseases later in adult life.

Objectives: To assess the concordance between lymphoma diagnoses made via tissue biopsy by local pathologists and also to assess the after review of these specimens by more specialized hematopathologists.
Methods: A prospective, non-interventional and multicenter study was conducted at seven sites in Mexico from January 2017 to October 2017. Eligible biopsies were sampled from patients with a previous diagnosis of lymphoma on lymph node biopsy or a diagnosis of extranodal lymphoma, with adequate amount and tissue preservation for the review analysis.

Background: COVID-19 has been associated with negative results in patients with A blood group and with a better evolution in O blood group individuals.
Aim: Because the evidence regarding ABO blood groups and COVID was empirically not that clear in our country, we tested the association regarding COVID-19 and blood groups.
Material And Methods: Adult patients were enrolled in this prospective, case-control, observational multicenter study.
Background: The ISCHEMIA-CKD (International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches-Chronic Kidney Disease) trial found no advantage to an invasive strategy compared to conservative management in reducing all-cause death or myocardial infarction (D/MI). However, the prognostic influence of angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD) burden and ischemia severity remains unknown in this population. We compared the relative impact of CAD extent and severity of myocardial ischemia on D/MI in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Background: There has been a global increase in the prevalence of obesity in pregnant women in recent years. Animal studies have shown that intrauterine environment associated with maternal obesity leads to epigenetic changes. However, the effects of epigenetic changes occurring before birth in response to maternal conditions have not been clearly characterized in humans.

Brick-kilns are polluted environments due to the use of low-quality technologies and fuels, which generates black fumes with a large number of pollutants. The objective of this research was to analyze environmental exposure and biomarkers of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals, and respiratory health in brickmakers to assess the baseline state of contamination in a brick-kiln area of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Lead was quantified in soil and particulate matter of 2.

Meropenem pharmacokinetics in neonates exhibits large interindividual variability due to developmental changes occurring during the first month of life. The objective was to characterize meropenem pharmacokinetics through a population approach to determine effective dosing recommendations in neonates with severe nosocomial infections. Three blood samples from forty neonates were obtained once steady-state blood levels were achieved and plasma concentrations were determined with a validated chromatographic method.

Introduction: Lupus nephritis requires antinuclear antibodies as classification criteria. There is a group of patients with nephrotic syndrome and conclusive histopathological findings for lupus nephritis, without classification criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or extrarenal manifestations. These groups of patients have been described as "lupus-like" nephritis or "renal-limited lupus nephritis".

The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Simplified Inguinal Pain Questionnaire (sIPQ) and compare it to the regular Inguinal Pain Questionnaire (IPQ) for external validation. To do so, the IPQ and sIPQ were telephonically administered at 7 and 28 days postoperatively for a cohort of 25 patients who underwent Lichtenstein hernioplasty. A psychometric analysis of the scores was done using Cronbach's alpha and test-retest assessments.

Purpose: Resistance to neoadjuvant chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FAC) in some patients with locally advanced breast cancer remains one of the main obstacles to first-line treatment. We investigated clinical and pathological responses to FAC neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Mexican women with breast cancer and their possible association with SNPs present in ABC transporters as predictors of chemoresistance.
Materials: A total of 102 patients undergoing FAC neoadjuvant chemotherapy were included in the study.

Methotrexate is the gold standard treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. Once absorbed, it is internalized in cells, where glutamate residues are added to produce polyglutamated forms, which are responsible for the effect of methotrexate. The aim of the current study is to determine the relationship between methotrexate triglutamate concentrations and the clinical evolution in rheumatoid arthritis patients, as well as to characterize the variability in both features to propose strategies for low-dose methotrexate optimization.

Background: Hospitalized pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) patients have frequent clinical deterioration events (CDE) requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission, particularly in resource-limited settings. The objective of this study was to describe CDEs in hospitalized PHO patients in Latin America and to identify event-level and center-level risk factors for mortality.
Methods: In 2017, the authors implemented a prospective registry of CDEs, defined as unplanned transfers to a higher level of care, use of ICU-level interventions on the floor, or nonpalliative floor deaths, in 16 PHO centers in 10 countries.
Background: Belimumab is approved for the treatment of active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although clinical trials showed a favourable benefit-risk profile, numerical differences in the incidence of mortality and adverse events of special interest (AESIs) have been reported. We assessed the frequency of these events in patients with SLE receiving belimumab or placebo plus standard therapy.

After more than 20 years of sustained work, the Latin American Group for the Study of Lupus (GLADEL) has made a significant number of contributions to the field of lupus, not only in the differential role that race/ethnicity plays in its course and outcome but also in several other studies including the beneficial effects of using antimalarials in lupus patients and the development of consensus guidelines for the treatment of lupus in our region. A new generation of "Lupus Investigators" in more than 40 centers throughout Latin America has been constituted in order to continue the legacy of the investigators of the original cohort and to launch a novel study of serum and urinary biomarkers in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. So far, we have recruited 807 patients and 631 controls from 42 Latin-American centers including 339 patients with SLE without renal involvement, 202 patients with SLE with prevalent but inactive renal disease, 176 patients with prevalent and active renal disease and 90 patients with incident lupus nephritis.
