Assessment of serum levels of natriuretic peptides, especially the amino-terminal portion (NT-proBNP) and the carboxy-terminal portion (BNP) of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, has had a highly significant clinical impact on the diagnosis and prognostic stratification of patients with heart failure (HF). They are now an instrument with recognized value in this context and several studies have demonstrated their value in tailoring therapy for these patients. Following the recent advent of angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs), there is a need to review how these two biomarkers are interpreted in HF.

Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a hematological marker of systemic inflammation and several studies demonstrate an association between a higher NLR and a worse prognosis in many malignancies. However, literature analyzing its prognostic value in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is still scarce. We intended to analyze the correlation of NLR with overall survival and progression-free survival in patients with GBM performing a retrospective review of the patients with diagnosis of GBM submitted to a resection surgery in the department of neurosurgery of a tertiary care hospital, between January/2005 and January/2013.

Background: Elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a hallmark in heart failure (HF). Diabetic patients with chronic HF seem to have higher BNP than nondiabetics. We studied, in acute HF, if BNP levels are different between diabetics and nondiabetics.

As the human ovarian follicle enlarges in the course of a regular cycle or following controlled ovarian stimulation, the changes in its structure reveal the oocyte environment composed of cumulus oophorus cells and the follicular fluid (FF).In contrast to the dynamic nature of cells, the fluid compartment appears as a reservoir rich in biomolecules. In some aspects, it is similar to the plasma, but it also exhibits differences that likely relate to its specific localization around the oocyte.

Background And Objective: Autotitrating positive airway pressure (APAP) is an accepted titration method to determine the optimal positive airway pressure (PAP), for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The required duration of APAP monitoring to determine a fixed continuous positive airway pressure level still remains to be established. We aimed to evaluate the variation in PAP level, delivered by APAP devices, at different periods of treatment, to determine the APAP treatment duration required to reach an effective and stable PAP level.

Objective: To identify trajectories of sleep quality up to three years after breast cancer diagnosis and to assess differences in characteristics of patients across distinct trajectories.
Methods: A total of 458 breast cancer patients underwent a neurological evaluation before treatment and at one and three years after diagnosis. Clinical data were obtained throughout the follow-up.

Purpose: During ovarian follicle growth, local cellular interactions are essential for oocyte quality acquisition and successful fertilization. While cumulus cells (CCs) nurture oocytes, they also deliver oocyte-secreted factors (OSFs) that activate receptors on CCs. We hypothesized that disturbance of those interactions contributes to age-related lower reproductive success in women submitted to assisted reproductive technology treatments.

Purpose: We aimed to assess the factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity of the European Portuguese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in breast cancer patients.
Methods: This study was based on a cohort of breast cancer patients, among whom the PSQI was used to measure sleep quality three years after cancer diagnosis (N = 474). A sample of 62 participants underwent additional PSQI testing, wore a wrist actigraph for five consecutive days, and was reevaluated with the PSQI after one month.

The Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative commenced during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999. The initial goals were (1) to propose a new allergic rhinitis classification, (2) to promote the concept of multi-morbidity in asthma and rhinitis and (3) to develop guidelines with all stakeholders that could be used globally for all countries and populations. ARIA-disseminated and implemented in over 70 countries globally-is now focusing on the implementation of emerging technologies for individualized and predictive medicine.

Introduction: To evaluate the results of the abdominal aortic aneurism endovascular treatment (EVAR), percutaneously and with local anesthesia, according to the concept of one day surgery.
Material And Methods: Unicentric, retrospective analysis of patients with aorto-iliac aneurysmal disease, consecutively treated by EVAR with percutaneous access trough the Preclose technique (pEVAR), according to the outpatient criteria, with one overnight stay in the hospital. The technical success, exclusion of the aneurysmal sac, endoleak, re-intervention and mortality were evaluated.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity, influencing the release of inflammation mediators and promoting remodeling and collagen deposition in the adipose tissue (AT). In this context, this work aims to elucidate whether TGF-β and Smad-dependent or Smad-independent signaling pathways contribute to regional differentiation of AT in high-fat diet (HFD) and energy-restricted (ER) rat models. For this, TGF-β, TGF-β receptors I and II, PAI-1 and GLUT4 mRNA levels were quantified by real-time PCR, and western blotting assays allowed the semiquantification of TGF-β and proteins from Smad3, ERK1/2 and Akt signaling pathways in subcutaneous and visceral (epididymal, retroperitoneal and mesenteric) fat depots from control, HFD and ER-treated rats.

This systematic review discusses data on the dietary intake of preschool children living in the Mediterranean countries of the European Union, including the comparison with a Mediterranean-like diet and the association with nutritional status. Specifically, data from the multinational European Identification and Prevention on Dietary and life style induced health effects in children and infants (IDEFICS) study and national studies, such as the Estudo do Padrão Alimentar e de Crescimento Infantil (EPACI) study and Geração XXI cohort in Portugal, ALimentando la SAlud del MAñana (ALSALMA) study in Spain, Étude des Déterminants pré-et postnatals précoces du développement et de la santé de l'ENfant (EDEN) cohort in France, Nutrintake 636 study in Italy, and Growth, Exercise and Nutrition Epidemiological Study in preSchoolers (GENESIS) cohort in Greece, were analyzed. In the majority of countries, young children consumed fruit and vegetables quite frequently, but also consumed sugared beverages and snacks.

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) plays a role in the improvement of cardiac function and remodeling. Their serum levels are strongly related with mortality in chronic systolic heart failure (HF). The aim of this study was to study prognostic value of HGF in acute HF, interaction with ejection fraction, renal function, and natriuretic peptides.

Athletes often complain about breathing problems. This is a crucial issue due to potential implications not only on their general health, but also on their competing performance. Asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction are prevalent conditions in elite athletes, which leads doctors to rely most of the times on asthma medication to treat athletes feeling "out of breath".
