Reprod Biomed Online

October 2024

Department of Biomedicine Experimental Biology Unit, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.; Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), Porto, Portugal.. Electronic address:

Research Question: Does metformin reverse endometriosis-associated infertility?

Design: Endometriosis was induced by transplanting uterus fragments from B6CBAF1 mice into recipients of the same strain. The mice were divided into groups: endometriosis (End, n = 24), sham-operated (Sham, n = 12), endometriosis with metformin (0.5mg/ml) orally administered for 3 months (EndMet, n = 21) and sham-operated metformin-treated (ShamMet, n = 16).

Electronic address:

Background And Aim: Pregnancy after the age of 35 is correlated with an increased risk of impaired placentation and the development of pregnancy-associated complications. Changes in uterine redox balance seem to play a role in these settings. In this work, we hypothesized that local redox dysregulation impacts the placenta metabolic profile.

Early Acute Kidney Injury in Stroke Patients Submitted to Endovascular Treatment: A Cohort Study.

J Clin Med

November 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Unidade Local de Saúde de Gaia e Espinho EPE, Rua Conceição Fernandes, 4434-502 Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in patients after endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke, impacting recovery and survival rates.
  • A study involving 1150 patients revealed an AKI incidence of 6%, with risk factors including older age, longer treatment times, and lower kidney function.
  • AKI significantly correlates with higher mortality rates, emphasizing the need for improved treatment strategies for at-risk patients.

We present a case of a woman in her 70s, with right upper quadrant pain and jaundice, who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy 14 days, previously. The ultrasound and computer tomography scan revealed a fluid lesion in the gallbladder fossa with intrahepatic extension. At this point a wide differential diagnosis was possible.

Background: Limited data are available regarding career length and competition level after combined anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial- or lateral-sided surgeries in elite athletes.

Purpose: To evaluate career length after surgical treatment of combined ACL plus medial collateral ligament (MCL) and ACL plus posterolateral corner (PLC) injuries in elite athletes and, in a subgroup analysis of male professional soccer players, to compare career length and competition level after combined ACL+MCL or ACL+PLC surgeries with a cohort who underwent isolated ACL reconstruction (ACLR).

Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

Heterotopic hepatic tissue is a rare development anomaly, exhibiting diverse forms and locations. We present a case report of an asymptomatic woman in her 40s who had an 8 cm mass in the left hypochondrium detected on routine ultrasound, which was initially suspected to be a tumour. Further investigation revealed that the mass had a similar enhancement to the liver on gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI and presented a connection with the original liver via vascular pedicle, favouring the diagnosis of accessory liver lobe (ALL).

Purpose: The occurrence of a hypersensitivity reaction with the injection of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in cosmetic use is a rare complication. We report the largest case series of temporary delayed hypersensitivity reaction (DHR) with BTX-A following COVID-19 vaccination and the first cases to incobotulinum toxin A (incoBTX-A).

Methods: A retrospective multicentric case series of patients who developed a DHR to BTX-A after COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: Sotorasib 960 mg once daily is approved to treat KRAS G12C-mutated locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Sotorasib exhibits non-dose proportional pharmacokinetics and clinical responses at lower doses; therefore, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of sotorasib 960 mg and 240 mg.

Methods: In this phase 2, randomized, open-label study, adults with KRAS G12C-mutated advanced NSCLC received sotorasib 960 mg or 240 mg once daily.

We present a case of a 59-year-old patient with chronic low back pain, caused by a retroperitoneal intraneural tumour. Laparoscopic excision was performed and histology revealed a spinal nerve root neurofibroma. Post-operatively, the patient developed partial motor and sensitive deficits due to tumoral nerve entrapment, with progressive recovery with rehabilitation.

Many women seek treatment to improve menopausal vasomotor symptoms (VMS). The selection of women most likely to benefit from menopause hormone therapy (MHT) is crucial in clinical practice. There is general agreement that women younger than 60 years or who initiate MHT within the first 10 years of menopause, with no contraindications, have greater benefits considering symptomatic relief and additional advantages.

  • The most common telemonitoring tools were mobile applications (21) and web-based systems (14), with monitoring duration ranging from 2 weeks to 32 months and data collected on various asthma-related factors, including symptoms and medication adherence.
  • Despite significant research, there is a noted lack of tailored telemonitoring technologies for preschool-aged children, highlighting the need for targeted studies in this area.

Endovascular therapy (EVT) is a highly effective stroke treatment, but trials validating this intervention did not include patients with posterior cerebral artery (PCA) occlusion. The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy and safety of EVT for acute PCA occlusion. PubMed, Scopus, ISI, and CENTRAL were searched for studies assessing EVT in adult patients with PCA occlusion.

Revised European guidelines for the accreditation of sleep medicine centres.

J Sleep Res

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Medical Park Bad Feilnbach, Bad Feilnbach, Germany.

The accreditation of sleep centres aims to ensure high-quality diagnosis and management of sleep centres. European accreditation standards were introduced in 2006, and were aimed at centres offering inpatient polysomnography and vigilance tests (Mean Sleep Latency Test and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test). Since then, the practice of sleep medicine has evolved, with greater use of ambulatory polysomnography and polygraphy.

The treatment of shoulder instability in the presence of a subcritical glenoid defect poses challenges, as simple Bankart seems insufficient, and the Latarjet procedure may be excessive. Recently, a dynamic anterior stabilization technique involving anterior transposition of the long head of the biceps (LHB) through a subscapularis split was described for that purpose. Previously published results demonstrated good short-term results, but several technical pitfalls have also been mentioned.

Ventral incisional hernias are common indications for elective repair and frequently complicated by recurrence. Surgical meshes, which may be synthetic, bio-synthetic, or biological, decrease recurrence and, resultingly, their use has become standard. While most patients are greatly benefited, mesh represents a permanently implanted foreign body.

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the leading cause of pediatric chronic liver disease. Although nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is closely associated with obesity, its relationship with metabolic syndrome in children is not fully understood. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents with overweight/obesity, using a pediatric metabolic syndrome score (PsiMS) to predict metabolic syndrome.
