Certain entities may simultaneously involve the lungs and the myocardium. Knowing their cardiac and thoracic manifestations enhances the understanding of those conditions and increases awareness and suspicion for possible concurrent cardiothoracic involvement. Entities that can present with pulmonary and myocardial involvement include infiltrative diseases like sarcoidosis and amyloidosis, eosinophil-associated conditions including eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), connective tissue diseases such as systemic sclerosis (SSc) and lupus erythematosus and genetic disorders like Fabry disease (FD).

Background: Persistent hyperlactatemia has been considered as a signal of tissue hypoperfusion in septic shock patients, but multiple non-hypoperfusion-related pathogenic mechanisms could be involved. Therefore, pursuing lactate normalization may lead to the risk of fluid overload. Peripheral perfusion, assessed by the capillary refill time (CRT), could be an effective alternative resuscitation target as recently demonstrated by the ANDROMEDA-SHOCK trial.

Introduction: Twig-like middle cerebral artery configuration (Tw-MCA) is a rare and commonly misdiagnosed vascular anomaly characterized by a plexiform arterial network that replaces the normal M1 segment. The prevalence and clinical relevance of this anomaly is not fully established.
Material And Methods: We sought to explore the prevalence of Tw-MCA in patients clinically referred to digital angiography in a single academic comprehensive endovascular center and evaluated the radiological and clinical findings among patients with hemorrhagic events.

Introduction: Identification of the pathogen in case of a periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains 1 of the greatest challenges in septic surgery. Rapid germ identification enables timely, specific, antimicrobial therapy. The first multiplex PCR (polymerase chain reaction) generation (Unyvero-i60) enables germ detection within 5 hours with a sensitivity of 78.

Background: The Chilean Program for the Control and Elimination of Tuberculosis (PROCET) has reduced mortality from this disease by 78% between 2004 and 2013. However, after decades of successful results, starting in 2000 there was a slowdown in the reduction of incidence and since 2014, an increase in it.
Aim: To describe the socio-epidemiological evolution of tuberculosis (TB) cases treated at health clinics in the Metropolitan Region (MR) of Chile from 2005 to 2018, stratifying by country of origin.

Platinum-based compounds are widely used for the treatment of different malignancies due to their high effectiveness. Unfortunately, platinum-based treatment may lead to ototoxicity, an often-irreversible side effect without a known effective treatment and prevention plan. Platinum-based compound-related ototoxicity results mainly from the production of toxic levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) rather than DNA-adduct formation, which has led to test strategies based on direct ROS scavengers to ameliorate hearing loss.

Background: In the perioperative context, a frailty evaluation scale must consider certain characteristics such as validation, execution speed, simplicity, the capacity to measure multiple dimensions and not being dependent on a cognitive or physical test that could not be performed prior to surgery. The test should select patients that could benefit from interventions aimed to improve their postoperative outcomes.
Aim: To validate two frailty evaluation scales for the perioperative period.

Background: Assessment of tissue hypoxia at the bedside has yet to be translated into daily clinical practice in septic shock patients. Perfusion markers are surrogates of deeper physiological phenomena. Lactate-to-pyruvate ratio (LPR) and the ratio between veno-arterial PCO difference and Ca-vO (ΔPCO/Ca-vO) have been proposed as markers of tissue hypoxia, but they have not been compared in the clinical scenario.

Knockdown of the antisense noncoding mitochondrial RNAs (ASncmtRNAs) induces apoptotic death of several human tumor cell lines, but not normal cells, supporting a selective therapy against different types of cancer. In this work, we evaluated the effects of knockdown of ASncmtRNAs on bladder cancer (BCa). We transfected the BCa cell lines UMUC-3, RT4 and T24 with the specific antisense oligonucleotide Andes-1537S, targeted to the human ASncmtRNAs.

Background The treatment of choice of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) is an induction with proteasome inhibitors followed autologous stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Since 2013, the treatment of these patients in the public system is based on CTD (cyclophosphamide, thalidomide, and dexamethasone). Aim To evaluate the response rates achieved with CTD, and the results of HSCT in patients with NDMM in the public setting.

Background: Fluid boluses are administered to septic shock patients with the purpose of increasing cardiac output as a means to restore tissue perfusion. Unfortunately, fluid therapy has a narrow therapeutic index, and therefore, several approaches to increase safety have been proposed. Fluid responsiveness (FR) assessment might predict which patients will effectively increase cardiac output after a fluid bolus (FR+), thus preventing potentially harmful fluid administration in non-fluid responsive (FR-) patients.
