It is not known whether anatomical scores perform better than general critical care scores for trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). We compare the predictive performance for hospital mortality of general critical care scores (SAPS 3 and SOFA) with anatomical injury-based scores (Injury Severity Score [ISS] and New ISS [NISS]). Retrospective cohort study of patients admitted to a specialized trauma ICU from a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil between May, 2012 and January, 2016.

Determinants of death in critically ill COVID-19 patients during the first wave of COVID-19: a multicenter study in Brazil.

Objective: To evaluate clinical outcomes and factors associated with mortality, focusing on secondary infections, in critically ill patients with COVID-19 in three Brazilian hospitals during the first pandemic wave.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study involving adult patients with COVID-19 admitted to one of the participating ICUs between March and August of 2020. We analyzed clinical features, comorbidities, source of SARS-CoV-2 infection, laboratory data, microbiology data, complications, and causes of death.

Recommendations for the treatment of vulvar cancer in settings with limited resources: Report from the International Gynecological Cancer Society consensus meeting.

Introduction: Due to scant literature and the absence of high-level evidence, the treatment of vulvar cancer is even more challenging in countries facing limited resources, where direct application of international guidelines is difficult. Recommendations from a panel of experts convened to address some of these challenges were developed.

Methods: The panel met in Rio de Janeiro in September 2019 during the International Gynecological Cancer Society congress and was composed of specialists from countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Data-driven ICU management: Using Big Data and algorithms to improve outcomes.

The digitalization of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) led to an increasing amount of clinical data being collected at the bedside. The term "Big Data" can be used to refer to the analysis of these datasets that collect enormous amount of data of different origin and format. Complexity and variety define the value of Big Data.

Guidelines for therapy of patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms during the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2 pandemic.

The novel coronavirus has swept across the world in 2020 and ushered a new era. In the current scenario, it is not clear how patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (including chronic myelogenous leukemia) should be managed, considering the risk of therapy, the need for social distancing and the risk of untimely therapy discontinuation of delay. This guideline aims to give providers a sense of direction in order to better take care of patients and prioritize care.

Response to pembrolizumab in a heavily treated patient with metastatic ovarian carcinosarcoma.

Background: Ovarian carcinosarcoma is a rare malignancy associated with a high rate of cancer-related mortality even at early stages. Guidelines for systemic treatment have been difficult to establish because the disease is commonly excluded from prospective clinical trials. Ovarian carcinosarcoma is usually managed as high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer despite major histologic differences.
