Periodontal Regeneration of Vital Poor Prognosis Teeth with Attachment Loss Involving the Root Apex: Two Cases with up to 5 Years Follow-Up.

Dent J (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Restorative Dentistry, National Dental Centre Singapore, 5 Second Hospital Ave, Singapore 168938, Singapore.

Teeth with attachment loss involving the root apex are severely compromised and have a poor periodontal prognosis. In cases where periodontal regeneration is possible, current guidelines suggest that endodontic treatment is performed first. However, root canal treatment increases the overall treatment time and costs, has risks of endodontic complications, and could predispose teeth to mechanical failure.

Background: Reviewing experiences and recognizing the impact of personal and professional views and emotions upon conduct shapes a physician's professional and personal development, molding their professional identity formation (PIF). Poor appreciation on the role of reflection, shortages in trained tutors and inadequate 'protected time' for reflections in packed medical curricula has hindered its integration into medical education. Group reflection could be a viable alternative to individual reflections; however, this nascent practice requires further study.

Aging-induced aortic stiffness has been associated with altered fatty acid metabolism. We studied aortic stiffness using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-assessed ventriculo-arterial coupling (VAC) and novel aortic (AO) global longitudinal strain (GLS) combined with targeted metabolomic profiling. Among community older adults without cardiovascular disease, VAC was calculated as aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), a marker of arterial stiffness, divided by left ventricular (LV) GLS.

The effects of VY closure on lip morphology after Le Fort I maxillary advancement: A systematic review.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

October 2024

Discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore, 9 Lower Kent Ridge Road, Singapore, 119085. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of VY closure compared to conventional continuous closure (CS) in preventing lip shortening after Le Fort 1 maxillary advancements.
  • A systematic review of 487 articles led to the inclusion of six studies, showing that VY closure doesn’t reliably prevent lip shortening, though it may have benefits for larger maxillary advancements.
  • Results indicated that VY closure often results in a more protrusive lip appearance due to increased lip vermillion exposure, so surgeons should consider individual aesthetic preferences when choosing this technique.

Background: Geostatistical analysis of health data is increasingly used to model spatial variation in malaria prevalence, burden, and other metrics. Traditional inference methods for geostatistical modelling are notoriously computationally intensive, motivating the development of newer, approximate methods for geostatistical analysis or, more broadly, computational modelling of spatial processes. The appeal of faster methods is particularly great as the size of the region and number of spatial locations being modelled increases.
