Feasibility of home-based urine collection in children under 5 years in the ORIGINS birth cohort study: mixed method protocol and sample completion results.

Background: Urine is an attractive biospecimen for nutritional status and population health surveys. It is an excellent non-invasive alternative to blood for appropriate biomarkers in young children and is suitable for home-based collection, enabling representative collections across a population. However, the bulk of literature in this population is restricted to collection in primary care settings.

Novel CAD/CAM-splint-based navigation protocol enhances intraoperative maxillary position control in orthognathic surgery: a case control study.

Background: Virtual surgical planning for orthognathic surgery typically relies on two methods for intraoperative plan transfer: CAD/CAM occlusal splints and patient-specific implants (PSI). While CAD/CAM splints may offer limited accuracy, particularly in the vertical dimension, PSIs are constrained by higher costs and extended preparation times. Surgical navigation has emerged as a potential alternative, but existing protocols often involve invasive registration or lack transparent evaluation.

Monte Carlo in the mechanistic modelling of the FLASH effect: a review.

FLASH radiotherapy employs ultra-high dose rates of >40 Gy/s, which may reduce normal tissue complication as compared to conventional dose rate treatments, while still ensuring the same level of tumour control. The potential benefit this can offer to patients has been the cause of great interest within the radiation oncology community, but this has not translated to a direct understanding of the FLASH effect. The oxygen depletion and inter-track interaction hypotheses are currently the leading explanations as to the mechanisms behind FLASH, but these are still not well understood, with many questions remaining about the exact underpinnings of FLASH and the treatment parameters required to optimally induce it.

A national Australian Congenital Heart Disease registry; methods and initial results.

Background: Although several National Data Registries for Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) exist, few are comprehensive and contemporary. A National Australian CHD Registry has been developed that aims to redress this by creating the first comprehensive data collection for CHD children and adults, initially across Australia.

Methods: We defined and collected a minimum dataset of demographics, diagnoses, and procedures from people with CHD presenting at participating quaternary CHD services Australia-wide.

Association between serum urate levels and all-cause mortality, cardiovascular and renal outcomes among gout patients in Singapore.

Objectives: We investigated the longitudinal association between Serum Urate (SU) level and Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), Stroke, End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) and all-cause mortality.

Design: We conducted a retrospective hospital-based cohort study of individuals with gout managed in specialist outpatient clinics. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate HR and 95% CI, with adjustments for potential confounders.

Mining single-cell data for cell type-disease associations.

A robust understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying diseases sets the foundation for the effective design of drugs and other interventions. The wealth of existing single-cell atlases offers the opportunity to uncover high-resolution information on expression patterns across various cell types and time points. To better understand the associations between cell types and diseases, we leveraged previously developed tools to construct a standardized analysis pipeline and systematically explored associations across four single-cell datasets, spanning a range of tissue types, cell types and developmental time periods.

Obturator nerve schwannoma: a case report and review of the robotic literature.

Obturator schwannomas are rare and often misdiagnosed as intraperitoneal pelvic masses. The optimal surgical approach for their resection is unclear. This study presents a case demonstrating the safe use of robotics for resecting a benign pelvic schwannoma and reviews the literature on robotic cases.

A novel, double Limberg flap repair for recurrent pilonidal sinus disease.

Pilonidal sinuses are chronic inflammation and/or infection of the intergluteal region. Recurrent disease is common and is a source of significant morbidity for affected patients. We present a case of an eighteen-year-old male with extensive recurrent pilonidal disease.

Exploring Sugary Drink Consumption and Perceptions among Primary-School-Aged Children and Parents in Australia.

Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) account for a significant proportion of sugar in the diet of children and are directly associated with obesity in this group. While there have been many studies on adolescent SSB consumption, few studies have examined the predictors of SSB consumption in primary-school-aged children. The aim of this study was to understand the degree to which a child's consumption across a range of beverages is influenced by their own attitudes and by their parents' attitudes and parents' consumption behaviours.

Enhancing surgical occlusion setting in orthognathic surgery planning using mixed reality technology: a comparative study.

Objectives: Orthognathic surgery necessitates precise occlusal alignment during surgical planning, traditionally achieved through manual alignment of physical dental models as the recognized gold standard. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of mixed reality technology in enhancing surgical occlusion setting compared to traditional physical alignment and an established virtual method, addressing the research question: Can mixed reality technology improve the accuracy and efficiency of occlusion setting in orthognathic surgery planning?

Materials & Methods: This experimental study compared the surgical occlusion settings of 30 orthognathic cases using three methods: a new virtual method with mixed reality technology, the traditional gold standard of physical alignment, and an established virtual occlusion method using the IPS Case Designer (KLS Martin SE & Co. KG, Tuttlingen, Germany).

Boys with bladder dysfunction may have posterior urethral valves - A simple framework to aid investigation.

Background: Bladder dysfunction (BD) is a common presenting complaint to paediatric urology outpatient clinics, accounting for up to 47% of referrals and affecting one in ten children of toilet training age. Boys with bladder dysfunction have been shown to have higher rates of posterior urethral valves (PUV) however when to consider cystourethroscopy in this group is unclear.

Objective: Our primary aim was to assess the likelihood of detecting PUV in a cohort of boys of toilet training age presenting to a paediatric urologist with symptoms of bladder dysfunction.

Intraoral Scanning Enables Virtual-Splint-Based Non-Invasive Registration Protocol for Maxillofacial Surgical Navigation.

Surgical navigation has advanced maxillofacial surgery since the 1990s, bringing benefits for various indications. Traditional registration methods use fiducial markers that are either invasively bone-anchored or attached to a dental vacuum splint and offer high accuracy but necessitate additional imaging with increased radiation exposure. We propose a novel, non-invasive registration protocol using a CAD/CAM dental splint based on high-resolution intraoral scans.

Accuracy and clinical fit of milled versus rapid prototyped orthognathic surgical splints.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become an integral part of orthognathic surgery. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating accuracy of orthognathic surgical splints fabricated from subtractive milling versus additive 3D printing. The primary aim of this in-vitro study was to compare the differences in trueness between milled and 3D-printed splints, while the secondary aim was to compare the differences in clinical fit of these splints.

Understanding variations in the built environment over time to inform longitudinal studies of young children's physical activity behaviour - The BEACHES project.

We know relatively little about the role the neighbourhood built environment plays in promoting young children's physical activity, particularly its longitudinal effect either through repeated exposure to the same environment or through change in exposure by moving from one neighbourhood to another. This study characterised the neighbourhood environment of young children in the PLAYCE cohort study over three timepoints from 2015 to 2023. There were statistically significant differences in built environment attributes between timepoints and across socio-economic status, however they did not represent practically significant differences.

Insights into the dosimetric and geometric characteristics of stereotactic radiosurgery for multiple brain metastases: A systematic review.

Background: GammaKnife (GK) and CyberKnife (CK) have been the mainstay stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) solution for multiple brain metastases (MBM) for several years. Recent technological advancement has seen an increase in single-isocentre C-arm linac-based SRS. This systematic review focuses on dosimetric and geometric insights into contemporary MBM SRS and thereby establish if linac-based SRS has matured to match the mainstay SRS delivery systems.

Mind the GAHP: A novel protocol for improved vascular access in the hypotensive patient.

Background: Obtaining intravenous access in hypotensive patients is challenging and may critically delay resuscitation. The Graduated Vascular Access for Hypotensive Patient (GAHP) protocol leverages intraosseous fluid boluses to specifically dilate proximal veins. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of GAHP in maximizing venous targets through early distal intraosseous access and a small fluid bolus.

Severity of knee osteoarthritis does not affect clinical outcomes following proximal fibular osteotomy - A systematic review and pooled analysis.

Background & Aims: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive degenerative disease of chronic nature. The mainstay of surgical management for KOA would be total knee arthroplasty. Joint preserving options like High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) and Proximal Fibular Osteotomy (PFO) have been offered as an inexpensive option by knee preservation surgeons.

TWEAK/Fn14 signalling driven super-enhancer reprogramming promotes pro-metastatic metabolic rewiring in triple-negative breast cancer.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype suffering from limited targeted treatment options. Following recent reports correlating Fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) receptor overexpression in Estrogen Receptor (ER)-negative breast cancers with metastatic events, we show that Fn14 is specifically overexpressed in TNBC patients and associated with poor survival. We demonstrate that constitutive Fn14 signalling rewires the transcriptomic and epigenomic landscape of TNBC, leading to enhanced tumour growth and metastasis.

Widespread haemorrhages in infants post-shunting (WHIPS): clinical features, risk factors and neuroimaging characteristics of a rare and under-recognised phenomenon.

Purpose: Infants undergoing CSF shunting procedures face a rare complication which we propose to rename "Widespread Haemorrhages in Infants Post-Shunting" (WHIPS) to better capture this unique phenomenon specific to infants undergoing CSF diversion. Our objective is to analyse the risk factors for WHIPS development and provide a detailed neuroradiological description of these haemorrhages.

Materials And Methods: A radiology information system (RIS) was searched using the search terms "shunt" and/or "catheter" and/or "drain" and/or "ventriculoperitoneal" and/or "VP" between September 2008 to January 2021 for patients < 12 months of age.

Periodontal Regeneration of Vital Poor Prognosis Teeth with Attachment Loss Involving the Root Apex: Two Cases with up to 5 Years Follow-Up.

Teeth with attachment loss involving the root apex are severely compromised and have a poor periodontal prognosis. In cases where periodontal regeneration is possible, current guidelines suggest that endodontic treatment is performed first. However, root canal treatment increases the overall treatment time and costs, has risks of endodontic complications, and could predispose teeth to mechanical failure.

Topical and oral peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α agonist ameliorates diabetic corneal neuropathy.

Diabetic corneal neuropathy (DCN) is a common diabetic ocular complication with limited treatment options. In this study, we investigated the effects of topical and oral fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α agonist, on the amelioration of DCN using diabetic mice (n = 120). Ocular surface assessments, corneal nerve and cell imaging analysis, tear proteomics and its associated biological pathways, immuno-histochemistry and western blot on PPARα expression, were studied before and 12 weeks after treatment.
