Cerebral Abscess Due to Nocardia beijingensis Associated With HIV: Case Report and Mini Review.

Brain abscesses are severe focal infections of the central nervous system. We report the case of a 37-year-old patient with a recent diagnosis of HIV, who presented with weakness in the left arm that progressed to left hemiplegia, ipsilateral paresthesia, holo cranial headache, fever accompanied by chills, and left tonic-clonic movements. A craniectomy and lesion resection were performed along with antimicrobial treatment.

Arrhythmias in transgender individuals.

The need to improve access to health services for the transgender community has become evident, especially concerning cardiovascular risk, which is higher compared to the general population. Surgical procedures and hormone therapies are common in this population to affirm gender identity, but they pose challenges as they are associated with disruptions in lipid metabolism, body fat concentration, and insulin resistance. Additionally, there is an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events such as venous thromboembolism, stroke, and myocardial infarction.

Role of Presurgical Gut Microbial Diversity in Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Weight-Loss Response: A Cohort Study.

Introduction: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) substantially alters the gut microbial composition which could be associated with the metabolic improvements seen after surgery. Few studies have been conducted in Latin American populations, such as Mexico, where obesity prevalence is above 30% in the adult population. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the changes in the gut microbiota structure in a Mexican cohort before and after RYGB and to explore whether surgery-related changes in the microbial community were associated with weight loss.

Background: The idea of the anterolateral thoracic musculature in men during the contour procedure is very limited, particularly in terms of surgical techniques that improve its appearance and aesthetics. Therefore, this study aimed to describe a technique of deep definition liposuction with intramuscular grafting of the serratus external oblique muscle complex.

Fusarium species represent an opportunistic fungal pathogen. The data in Mexico about Fusarium infections in humans are scarce. Here, we present a retrospective series of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of fusariosis in eight different hospitals in Mexico from January 2010 to December 2019.

Epidemiological studies suggest that approximately half of the patients with heart failure (HF) have reduced ejection fraction, while the other half have normal ejection fraction (EF). Currently, international guidelines consider QRS duration greater than 130 ms, in the presence of ventricular dysfunction (EF < 35%), as a criterion for selecting patients for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). CRT helps restore intraventricular and auriculoventricular synchrony, improving left ventricular (LV) performance, reducing functional mitral regurgitation, and inducing reverse LV remodeling.

Cooled Radiofrequency Treatment for Radicular Pain Related to Lumbar Disc Herniation.

Background: Lower back and radicular pain are leading causes of disability and loss of quality of life, especially due to its high prevalence in the general population. Cooled radiofrequency treatment (CRT) has emerged as a novel non-invasive technique for the management of discogenic pain with safe and effective results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of CRT in the treatment of radicular pain secondary to a lumbar hernia in patients with chronic neuropathic pain after receiving conservative treatment that did not achieve adequate pain management.

Introduction: osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the world and is defined as the gradual loss of cartilage in the joints, mainly that of the knee. It is considered a cause of disability in older adults and is characterized by pain, stiffness and loss of mobility.

Material And Methods: observational study to evaluate the effect of the combination of non-hydrolyzed type II native collagen (CII-NH), omega-3 (Om-3) and astaxanthin (AX), in a population of 182 patients with knee osteoarthritis grade I/II.

Prevalence and impact of vasomotor symptoms due to menopause among women in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Nordic Europe: a cross-sectional survey.

Objective: This study investigated the prevalence and impact of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS), related treatment patterns, and experiences in women.

Methods: The primary objective was to assess the prevalence of moderate to severe menopause-related VMS among postmenopausal women aged 40 to 65 years in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and four Nordic European countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden) using an online survey. Secondary objectives assessed impact of VMS among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with moderate to severe VMS using the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life questionnaire, Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire, Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System sleep disturbances assessment, and questions regarding treatment patterns and attitudes toward symptoms and available treatments.

Characterization of Three Cases of Primary Hypogalactia in Jalisco, Mexico.

Introduction: Human lactation should be taken into account as an important issue for the international agenda. Despite advances in lactation information and knowledge, insufficient milk production is still a concern for mothers and health practitioners, including International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and others. Primary hypogalactia, or insufficient milk production is uncommon, but should be considered when there is poor weight gain and decreased urine output in infants despite good latch-on and suckling, or anatomic differences in the physical exam of the lactating breast.

Observational analysis of clinical and pathological characteristics and their prognostic impact in Mexican patients with breast cancer: A multi-center study.

Breast cancer is the most incidental and deadly neoplasm worldwide; in Mexico, very few epidemiologic reports have analyzed the pathological features and its impact on their clinical outcome. Here, we studied the relation between pathological features and the clinical presentation at diagnosis and their impact on the overall and progression-free survival of patients with breast cancer. For this purpose, we collected 199 clinical records of female patients, aged at least 18 years old (y/o), with breast cancer diagnosis confirmed by biopsy.

Nodular (keloidal) scleroderma.

Keloidal or nodular scleroderma (NS) is a variant of localized scleroderma (LS) frequently seen in patients with limited or diffuse systemic sclerosis (SSc). It presents as raised, firm plaques or nodules with extensive dermal fibrosis and hyalinized collagen bundles. We present a patient with SSc who presented with this rare entity.

Intrathecal Baclofen Infusion Pump for the Treatment of Painful Spastic Hemiplegia: A Case Report.

Painful spastic hemiplegia is a common sequel to a stroke in which patients rarely achieve optimal levels of pain control. Herein, we report the case of a 62-year-old woman with painful spasticity secondary to an ischemic stroke of 15 years' evolution who received multiple pharmacological treatments without reaching motor or pain management goals. After an adequate analgesic response to the intrathecal baclofen test, the placement of an electromechanical pump was decided, reaching an effective maintenance dose of 150 μg per day.

Active Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance and Carbapenemase-Encoding Genes According to Sites of Care and Age Groups in Mexico: Results from the INVIFAR Network.

We analyzed the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data of 6519 clinical isolates of ( = 3985), ( = 775), ( = 163), ( = 781), ( = 124), and ( = 691) from 43 centers in Mexico. AMR assays were performed using commercial microdilution systems (37/43) and the disk diffusion susceptibility method (6/43). The presence of carbapenemase-encoding genes was assessed using PCR.

International Liver Transplantation Society Global Census: First Look at Pediatric Liver Transplantation Activity Around the World.
