Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the characteristics and effects of the time taken to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a Latin American cohort, noting that diagnosis can often be delayed and that SLE may resemble other diseases.
  • - Patients with longer diagnosis times (over 6 months) were often older, female, of Mestizo descent, uninsured, and displayed atypical symptoms, but this delayed diagnosis did not seem to affect their disease progression or mortality rates significantly.
  • - Overall, the research concludes that within this cohort, waiting up to 24 months for an SLE diagnosis, with a median of 6 months, did not lead to worse health outcomes.

Background: We previously described the KINSSHIP syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder associated with intellectual disability (ID), mesomelic dysplasia and horseshoe kidney, caused by variants in the degron of AFF3. Mouse knock-ins and overexpression in zebrafish provided evidence for a dominant-negative (DN) mode-of-action, wherein an increased level of AFF3 resulted in pathological effects.

Methods: Evolutionary constraints suggest that other mode-of-inheritance could be at play.

Menopause marks the end of menstrual cyclicity and, depending on individual vulnerability, has several consequences related to gonadal steroid deprivation, especially if it is premature. Menopause may be more burdensome for some women than for others. Individual factors, such as personal history, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and current health conditions, affect symptomatology and, thereby, the menopausal experience.

Fecal incontinence is the involuntary passage or the incapacity to control the release of fecal matter through the anus. It is a condition that significantly impairs quality of life in those that suffer from it, given that it affects body image, self-esteem, and interferes with everyday activities, in turn, favoring social isolation. There are no guidelines or consensus in Mexico on the topic, and so the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología brought together a multidisciplinary group (gastroenterologists, neurogastroenterologists, and surgeons) to carry out the «Mexican consensus on fecal incontinence» and establish useful recommendations for the medical community.

Rev Gastroenterol Mex (Engl Ed)

January 2024

Unidad de Hepatología y Trasplante, Departamento de Gastroenterología, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a worldwide public health problem associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the context of liver transplantation, the demand for organs continues to exceed the supply, prompting the consideration of using organs from HCV-positive donors in HCV-negative recipients. The introduction of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), which have demonstrated great efficacy in eradicating the virus, has made transplantation of organs from donors with HCV infection possible.

Locked posterior shoulder dislocation (LPSD) is a rare condition often overlooked. In most cases, the humeral head remains stuck behind the glenoid, causing an impression fracture in 40% to 90% of LPSD cases, known as a reverse Hill-Sachs lesion. The condition also affects the posterior capsulolabral complex and leads to the formation of scar tissue under the coracoid and subscapularis tendon, making it challenging to reduce without surgery.

AMPA (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid) receptors (AMPARs) mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the brain. AMPARs form by homo- or heteromeric assembly of subunits encoded by the GRIA1-GRIA4 genes, of which only GRIA3 is X-chromosomal. Increasing numbers of GRIA3 missense variants are reported in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), but only a few have been examined functionally.
