Article Synopsis
  • Trigger finger can cause pain and hinder daily activities, leading to a search for less invasive treatment options due to complications from traditional surgery.
  • An experimental study on cadavers compared three treatments: a new device, ultrasound-guided technique, and a percutaneous needle method, focusing on the effectiveness of A1 pulley release and safety concerning surrounding structures.
  • The new device and ultrasound methods achieved complete A1 pulley release in 100% of cases, while the needle method only succeeded 38% of the time, with the new device showing less damage to flexor tendons and no neurovascular injuries, making it a safer alternative for treating trigger finger.

Introduction: Despite the existing data on the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), the factors that determine these patients evolution remain elusive. Answers may lie, at least in part, in genetics. It is currently under investigation that MIS-C patients may have an underlying innate error of immunity (IEI), whether of monogenic, digenic, or even oligogenic origin.

April 2023

MD, MSc, PhD. Adjunct Professor, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Discipline of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery, Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) lacks standardized diagnostic criteria, making it hard to establish effective care protocols and compare clinical research findings.
  • A systematic review identified key diagnostic criteria and outcome measures used in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on CTS, focusing on studies from 2006 to 2019.
  • The findings revealed that while symptoms like paresthesia are common diagnostic criteria, there is significant heterogeneity across studies, with the Boston Questionnaire being the most utilized tool for outcome measurement.

A systematic review of the quality of distal radius systematic reviews: Methodology and reporting assessment.

PLoS One

September 2019

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Division of Hand Surgery, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Many systematic reviews (SRs) have been published about the various treatments for distal radius fractures (DRF). The heterogeneity of SRs results may come from the misuse of SR methods, and literature overviews have demonstrated that SRs should be considered with caution as they may not always be synonymous with high-quality standards. Our objective is to evaluate the quality of published SRs on the treatment of DRF through these tools.
