Background: Although reuse of enteral feeding equipment has been linked to risk of microbial contamination and risk of infection, there is a paucity of research in this area. Per the manufacturer's instructions low-profile gastrostomy feeding extension sets (LPG-FES) may be reusable for the same patient, but there are no recommendations on replacement intervals.
Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study to analyze and compare the contamination rate of LPG-FES after 15 (T1) and after 30 days (T2) of regular use.

Objectives: To determine if there is an association between the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and prognosis in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) diagnosed and treated in a Spanish population.
Material And Methods: Retrospective cohort of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer who had neutrophil and lymphocyte values in complete blood count before the histopathological diagnosis and survival of at least three months, in an intermediate complexity hospital. Convenience sampling.

Objectives: Calprotectin (CP) is a calcium and zinc binding protein that is widely measured on faecal samples but its determination in other biological fluids might be of interest. The aim of this work was to validate the measurement of CP in pleural fluid by chemiluminescence.
Methods: LIAISONXL, a fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer, was used for CP quantification on pleural fluid.

The Royal Decree 601/2019 of 18th October is the result of the partial transposition into the Spanish legal system of the Euratom Directive 59/2013. This Royal Decree includes the mandates of the Directive related to the need to justify and optimize medical exposure, including that of asymptomatic people, proposal of stricter requirements regarding the information that must be provided to the patient, registration and notification of the doses of medical-radiological procedures, use of reference levels for diagnosis and the availability of dose-indicating devices. The article reviews the most relevant aspects and novelties related to the principles of justification, optimization, dose control and the obligations derived from the right to information and consent.

Gallstone ileus is a rare complication of cholelithiasis, characterized by mechanical bowel obstruction due to a biliary calculus originating from a bilioenteric fistula. The Rigler triad, consisting of aerobilia, ectopic gallstone, and intestinal obstruction, is rarely observed in its complete form. We present the case of a 92-year-old male with a history of acute lithiasic cholecystitis who presented to the Emergency department with acute epigastric pain.

Background: Babesiosis is a globally growing tick-borne disease in humans. Severe babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens has been reported in two patients from Asturias (Northwestern Spain), suggesting an undetected risk for the disease. To analyze this risk, we retrospectively evaluated the seroprevalence of babesiosis in the Asturian population from 2015 through 2017, a period covering the intermediate years in which these two severe cases occurred.

Background: Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, and innovative patient support programmes can help and inform patients about their disease and improve their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the T-Coach programme in terms of improvement of disease knowledge, self-management and adherence to treatment in a real-world setting in Spain between July 2016 and October 2018.
Methods: We analyzed data from the T-Coach programme, a telephone platform that gives support to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with insulin glargine 300 U/ml (Gla-300).

The prevalence of postnatal growth faltering (PGF) in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) (<1500 g) is a universal problem. Growth improvement is expected as neonatal care is optimized. Objectives: To determine if there has been a decrease in the prevalence of PGF and an improvement in height at 2 years in appropriate for gestational age VLBW children in the last two decades.

(1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of restrictions and nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) changed the trends in respiratory viral circulation and the pattern in pediatric healthcare utilization; (2) Methods: A retrospective, multicenter observational study designed to analyze the impact of the pandemic on pediatric healthcare utilization and the viral circulation pattern in children in a region in Northern Spain was carried out. Viral diagnostics data from all nasal or pharyngeal swabs collected in children in Asturias during the periods of March 2018−September 2019 and March 2020−September 2021 were analyzed, as well as the number of pediatric hospitalizations and emergency visits; (3) Results: A total of 14,640 samples were collected during the pandemic period. Of these, at least one respiratory virus was detected in 2940 (20.

Background: Challenges of patient care in diabetes were exacerbated by COVID, undermining the ability of patients to engage in-person with health care professionals (HCPs). To combat this, there has been accelerated adoption of telemedicine to support patient and provider connectivity.
Methods: We collated survey information regarding telemedicine from 21 European clinical institutions.

We report the case of a 70-year-old male who visited for a colonoscopy on an outpatient basis after being admitted months earlier due to a subocclusive condition that was resolved with conservative treatment. His medical background included a laparotomy for a duodenal ulcer in 1979, as well as a subsequent intervention to debride adhesions. Cecal intubation was achieved with difficulty due to the patient's adhesive syndrome.

Background: Intravenous drug administration is associated with potential complications, such as phlebitis. The physiochemical characteristics of the infusate play a very important role in some of these problems.
Aim: The aim of this study was to standardize the dilutions of intravenous drugs most commonly used in hospitalized adult patients and to characterize their pH, osmolarity and cytotoxic nature to better guide the selection of the most appropriate vascular access.

While anti-TNF therapies are effective against psoriasis, 30%-50% of patients do not show an adequate response to these drugs. Different candidate-gene pharmacogenetics studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms that may predict anti-TNF drugs response in psoriasis. Nevertheless, only one paper has undertaken a pharmacogenomic approach failing to find significant biomarkers of biological drug response along the whole genome.

Psoriatic arthritis is a common type of inflammatory arthritis found in up to 40% of patients with psoriasis. Because skin involvement usually precedes joint involvement, dermatologists play a key role in early detection. Early diagnosis is important for reducing the risk of irreversible structural damage, attenuating the deterioration of physical function, and improving patients' quality of life.

Background And Aims: The NF-B pathway has been implicated in the genetic aetiology of psoriatic disease. However, since most patients with arthritis have psoriasis, discerning the genetic contributions to both aspects of psoriatic disease is not easy. Our aim was to study the association of common polymorphisms in genes of the NF-B pathway in patients with psoriatic disease in order to dissect the contribution of this pathway in the appearance of each component (skin and joint) of the disease.
