Structural inequality, the uneven distribution of resources and opportunities, influences health outcomes. However, the biological embedding of structural inequality in aging and dementia, especially among underrepresented populations, is unclear. We examined the association between structural inequality (country-level and state-level Gini indices) and brain volume and connectivity in 2,135 healthy controls, and individuals with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobe degeneration from Latin America and the United States.

Altwijri and Alsirhy reported a case of uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome after an Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation surgery in an advanced primary open-angle glaucoma patient, being the first ever recorded of its kind. The author describes the position of the tube as the origin of the anterior chamber inflammation and hyphema, which resolved shortly after shortening and relocating it. This publication emphasizes the importance of precise implant positioning and close-up patient follow-up after glaucoma filtration surgery as an important standard for healthcare providers.

Servicio Antimicrobianos, INEI-ANLIS ''Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán''. National and Regional Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance (NRRLAR). Buenos Aires, Argentina; Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). Electronic address:

Background: The OXA-48-like enzymes are members of the class D β-lactamases, primarily detected in Enterobacterales, with the capacity to hydrolyze carbapenems. The allelic variant bla, which has low hydrolytic activity towards carbapenemes, was detected in Argentina in 2011 and spread successfully since then, giving sporadic origin to novel local variants.

Aim: To study the phenotypic profile and the dissemination strategies of two novel OXA enzymes, bla and bla, harbored in Escherichia coli M17224 and Klebsiella pneumoniae M21014, isolated from two pediatric patients.

Multi-Omics Study Reveals Nc886/vtRNA2-1 as a Positive Regulator of Prostate Cancer Cell Immunity.

Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de la República, Sección Genómica Funcional, Montevideo 11400, Uruguay.

Noncoding RNA 886 has emerged as a pivotal regulatory RNA with distinct functions across tissues, acting as a regulator of protein activity by directly binding to protein partners. While it is well recognized as a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. To discover the principal pathways regulated by nc886 in prostate cancer, we used a transcriptomic and proteomic approach analyzing malignant DU145, LNCaP, PC3, and benign RWPE-1 prostate cell line models transiently transfected with in vitro transcribed nc886 or antisense oligonucleotides.

Melatonin stabilizes atherosclerotic plaques: an association that should be clinically exploited.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2024

CENECON, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Universidad de Buenos Aires, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica Argentina, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Atherosclerosis is the underlying factor in the premature death of millions of humans annually. The cause of death is often a result of the rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque followed by the discharge of the associated molecular debris into the vessel lumen which occludes the artery leading to ischemia of downstream tissue and to morbidity or mortality of the individual. This is most serious when it occurs in the heart (heart attack) or brain (stroke).

Background And Objectives: The intraosseous subarcuate loop (SL) is a unique variant of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA), where a loop of the artery is trapped in the petrous bone's subarcuate fossa (SF). Recognizing this variant is crucial for planning cerebellopontine angle (CPA) surgeries; however, data regarding its frequency and management vary in the published literature. A cohort from a single center was studied using MRI to assess its prevalence, and the findings were compared with the existing literature.

Purpose: Despite the rapid advancements in genomics and the enactment of a new cancer law in Chile, the implementation of cancer genetic counseling continues to face significant challenges because of limited resources and infrastructure.

Methods: We conducted a survey targeting health care providers who offer genetic counseling to patients with cancer and possess training in genetics and counseling. Additionally, we distributed a separate survey to high-risk patients associated with an advocacy group to gather insights on their perceptions of and experiences with cancer genetic counseling.

Electronic address:

With the urge to reduce the use of petroleum-based materials, the aim of this work is to valorize biowaste to develop smart films through a sustainable fabrication way. In this regard, choline chloride/urea (1:2) deep eutectic solvent (DES) at different concentrations (25, 40, 50 and 75 wt%) was used to dissolve cow horn, used as reinforcement agent in soy protein films. The film fabrication was carried out by compression molding, a fast and cost-effective.

Candidemia is the predominant form of invasive candidiasis and the most frequently occurring serious fungal infection in critically ill patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Studies carried out in Latin America reveal a higher incidence of candidemia and higher mortality rates when compared to North America or Europe. This highlights the need to develop guidelines for correctly diagnosing and treating candidemia in critically ill patients in the ICU.

The treatment landscape for IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is rapidly evolving with the introduction of novel therapies targeting diverse disease pathways. Some have already been approved in different countries, while others are under investigation in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with encouraging results. However, almost all performed RCTs have included only patients with refractory non-nephrotic proteinuria and preserved renal function.

After peripheral nerve injury, axon and myelin regeneration are key events for optimal clinical improvements. We have previously shown that early bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMC) transplantation exerts beneficial effects on myelin regeneration. In the present study, we analyze whether there is a temporal window in which BMMCs migrate more efficiently to damaged nerves while still retaining their positive effects.
